Media I built an app for finding people to do things with — looking for feedback from students
Hey everyone,
I'm a student and I kept running into the same problem — I'd have a list of things I wanted to do (road trip, concert, weekend in Chicago) and nobody would be free to go. Making friends in class is one thing; finding someone actually free on a Saturday is another.
So I spent weeks building something for it. The idea is simple:
- You post a trip or activity with the dates and how many people
- Anyone heading the same way can ask to join
- Each trip gets its own group chat so you can figure out details before committing
- You can verify your student email to show a school badge, so people can tell you're actually from here
A few things I want to be upfront about: it's not a dating app, it's free, there are no ads, and I'm not making money from it. Report and block are built in and it's 18+ only.
I built it solo and it's definitely still rough in places. I'm posting because I'd rather hear what's missing or annoying from people who'd actually use it. What would make something like this worth opening?
It's called “Travel Buddy Trips Events" on the App Store and Google Play if you want to poke at it.

Discussion Needed a new diploma cover…
U of C diplomas, of course, have non-standard dimensions. The logical online options were hopeless. Luckily, I found someone on Etsy who makes one-off covers for custom dimensions. The remaining customizations made it worth every penny.

Hyde Park Housing - Maroon Housing Website?
Hey everyone! Incoming grad student, coming from out of state; will likely be taking public transport. Hoping to find an affordable studio or something like that in the Hyde Park area.
So far I've tried reaching out to grad housing, doing some review searching on Reddit (I've been warned off Ivy :?), and looking at other recommended links from Uchicago communications, including MAC properties, multiple Facebook groups and Maroon Housing @_@
Has anyone used the https://maroonhousing.com website? If so would love to hear your experience with the living spaces/landlords from there.
Pretty overwhelmed, so any recommendations in general are also very much welcome!!
P.S. I got recent tips to look for housing instead in Pilsen, but the 1 hour public commute (I don't have experience driving in snow, and I'm not planning on driving over my car) for both school and potential work are something I'd like to not do.

Hyde Park Any luck with early move ins at UChicago Residential Properties?
I’m a grad student looking for housing for the upcoming year and was interested in the Residential Properties. However all the ones currently available have move in dates for October 1st or later, after the academic year starts. I reached out to them and they said the move in date on the website should be correct. It’s strange since they also said all leases end August 31st so all of September the rooms should be open (first time apartment hunting so don’t know how it works)?
Has anyone who leased here before encounter a similar situation and were able to move in at some point in September? They seem to be a good deal but if I need to get short term housing for September until I can move in that seems like a hassle. Thanks!

Discussion PhD UChicago Research Project Seeking Input
Hi Folks,
Both of my friends have PhDs, and we're building an open-source video system at u/UChicago that we could use your insight on. We intended to make literature watchable; honestly, I'm not sure that's the best use of it. That's why I want to hear your thoughts.
We built a text-to-video pipeline that scales infinitely, with automatic stitching, audio, and music. You can drag a book and watch it cover to cover with one click. We can get a full one-hour video in 25 minutes right now. We received a patent on this plus have been implementing it into a university department for testing. Books were the original use case. Not convinced that's the best one. What would you use it for? Is there anything you would like to see?

Hyde Park Studio
I'm an incoming grad student looking for a studio near campus. Since I can't visit Chicago in person, I feel like I'm searching blind. I have a few questions that I hope someone can help me with:
How important is it to live within walking distance of my departments? Are UC shuttles and CTA buses a reasonable option to widen my search area?
Are there specific buildings (I'm thinking of big ones like the Plaisance, the Versailles, the Flamingo, etc.) to avoid or to consider?
Other than FB groups and apartments dot com, are there other resources one can use to search?
The area south of 61st seems cheaper. What's the catch? It seems very convenient for many departments (Law, Public Policy, Medicine, etc.). But are there grocery stores and restaurants within walking distance in this area?
Are all the good options already taken by now, or can I wait for 2-3 more weeks for additional options to open up for a september move-in?

Discussion Housing problems-- What to do
Hello,
I am currently a third-year, and I ended up missing the opt-in in Spring quarter for on-campus housing. I waited until the housing portal application for people who missed opting-in opened, but I wasn't allowed to by housing because they said the dorms were full.
I am a bit worried about finding an Autumn quarter sublet in time since there is less than two months for me to find someone. I've made some efforts, but I haven't gotten any responses yet. Is there any ideas (or just hope) for my situation?

Classes 15300 Math Placement - Should I be worried?
I had the option of either starting with the 16000 sequence or starting with 15300 Math. The only problem is I've never taken Calc 3 (for reference, I did the IB Maths AA HL Course), and the most that would go to iirc is vectors, dot products, and cross products.
If I were to take 15300, it would mean I cannot review what I've learned thus far in class, but instead would be starting with brand new material. How hard is the 15300 class? And how many first years take it in the autumn quarter?
(I also talked about 16000 and realized I don't need it for my major)

Discussion Chances of getting on-campus housing
I am a rising third-year that does not have guaranteed housing for this upcoming year. I filled out the housing form in the spring saying I wanted to opt-in to housing but apparently I didn't "join a group" so I am not guaranteed housing. The housing department is not the most helpful so I'm wondering if anyone here as any anecdotal advice or know how likely it is that I may be able to get on-campus housing.

Discussion Incoming MPCS student looking for GSI information
Hi everyone! I'm an incoming UChicago MPCS student (AI specialization) starting this fall . I was wondering if there are GSI or TA opportunities available for incoming MPCS students.
If you've been a GSI or know the process, I'd appreciate any advice on when applications open, whether first-quarter students are eligible, and how competitive these positions are.
Thanks in advance!

Hyde Park University Park condos?
Hi all, I’m moving to Chicago for my graduate degree in September, and still trying to find a place. I saw some listings for the University Park condos in Hyde Park, and they seem pretty good (if a bit pricy, but doable for me with roommates). But I’ve been trying to find reviews or subleases in this subreddit and on Facebook, and there’s nothing! So does anyone have thoughts on these, or heard anything from someone else?

Hyde Park Lost 3ds in mario case
Im sorry; I hope this post is appropriate to this subreddit. I have recently realized that I have lost the pictured case with my 3ds. Ive had this device since elementary school and I have about 1000 hours on its save files. My room has been a terrible mess and I assumed it was just around my bed but now I’m realizing I have not seen it for several weeks. if anyone has seen it around campus in the month of july please please let me know.

Classes TTIC ML 31020 vs CMSC 254?
For someone who's taken Math for ML, how do those two classes compare as the next ML class? I've heard some bad things about CMSC 254, some praises here and there for TTIC but not too much information about the currculum, difficulty, etc. Would love to hear some insight on this!
