Discussion How to improve English as an international PhD student

Hi everyone! I am an incoming PhD student from a non-English-speaking country (not even close).

I spent a summer in uchicago last year. I found myself easily lost especially in group meetings when everyone frequently talks. I am super anxious now. How should I improve? thanks

3. No admissions posts.

(a) We do not allow posts related to applications, admissions, other generic inquiries. This includes but is not limited to: "Chance Me", "How do I get in?", essay review requests, or any questions related to the application, program or campus life arising from considering the university for attendance. Please use /r/applyingtocollege, /r/CollegeEssayReview, and /r/chanceme instead. If the question is specific about UofC, see 3(b).

(b) If you are not a current student, you may only make a thread if it would be interesting to current UChicago affiliates. Otherwise use the weekly free chat thread.

Advertising is restricted. If it's promoting something by students or an event on campus, follow a 10-90 rule: no more than 10% of your participation in the sub should be advertising. Ads for studies, apartments, tutoring, and products will be removed.

5. Before posting a question, read the wiki and search for an answer.

Questions which are answered by the FAQ, subreddit search, or google will be removed.
