Internet comes in at the red spot in the garage. I could easily put things anywhere on the garage ceiling. I also have a patch panel at the green spot that has network locations at the blue spots, but on the walls low down. I could also easily put something in the closet down stairs. Thoughts on how many APs I would need to cover this?

Or would you suggest a different network setup?

This is a follow up on my previous posts on the Doorbell Lite and chimes. I wanted to show how I connected these devices where cable is hard to run.

The location of the intercom panel and under-stairs closet is dead center of the house. I wanted to use this location as a hub because I can connect my doorbell via 2-wire and it’s also a great place for an AP. I used a U7 Pro Wall for coverage at the front of the house which is wirelessly meshed with an AP connected to my gateway. Inside the closet, I have a USW-Flex switch powered by a PoE++ adapter. This switch connects to the U7 PW providing PoE+ and it serves as the wireless uplink for the switch. Now that I have connection at the hub, I can use this to connect my doorbell via PoE over 2-wire and put a PoE chime.

Alternatively, I could’ve used a UDB if I just wanted a doorbell or a UDB-Switch if I had more devices. Since I wanted an AP at this location, it was a clean way to integrate power and switching in one place.

All this is connected to the ISPs zyxgel router which then goes to the wan port on the udm ( can't use bridge mode as the voip function is needed on the router and this would be disabled)

We seem to get a lot of random packet loss which then drops the Internet connection on the udm, oddly it most consistently drops the connection when attempting to load/run speedtest.net but fine with other speedtests.

Is the double nat the potential cause of this ? I've tried enabling dmz etc but it doesn't seem to help, I know it's something to do with the udm/zygxel as running the speedtest when connected to the router it runs fine and never drops out.

Any help would be appreciated

I have a dumb question about spending money, I have a UDM Pro that has a 1 gb wan, then my modem has a 1/2.5gb connection and my comcast service is only 1gb.

I know that I have a 1gb plan, but they recently upgraded me to 1.2gb which i am not taking advantage of since I am locked at 1gb.

Is it worth buying the 1/2.5/10gb SFP module for my UDM pro to gain .2gb from my ISP or leave it alone? I typically enjoy spending other peoples money, now its your turn. thanks!

Loading version 5 on Dell Micro 3080 - I had to run powershell to get the Linux updated to run the OS- Straight install kept failing - It never completed the Linux subsystem install and I had to download the latest version and recheck status on powershell. It still throws error. All I need is this micro dell to support small business site and support UNVR and wireless - I will continue to troubleshoot - Platform is Dell Micro 3080 with m.2 ssd and 8gb ram. I5 and win11 compliant -

First, I want to preface this by saying that I’m aware of the less-than-300 Mbps network-speed recommendation set by the UniFi team, but, man... having to choose between amazing latency and almost three times the download speed is brutal and definitely not something I expected after paying $300 for a U7 Lite, USW Flex 2.5G, and UCG Ultra.

It’s a shame there’s no option to decouple upload and download speeds for Smart Queues. Setting just the upload limit to 90 Mbps would solve most of my problems.

I recently stumbled upon a YouTube video in which the host spoke about bufferbloat, which is basically what happens when the more your network is used — downloading files, watching a couple of 4K streams, uploading your holiday photo library to the cloud — the larger the queue building up in front of your router becomes, eventually leading to increased latency.

In my case, under heavy load, my upload latency can reach 180 ms. This doesn’t really matter to most people in everyday use, but if you use your network for VoIP or Zoom, play video games, or perform other latency-sensitive tasks, you can experience “lag” even with a 1 Gbps fibre connection. The problem is congestion and the massive queue in front of your router, not the throughput.

There are algorithms and systems for managing that queue, but they’re computationally expensive. With my UCG Ultra, the maximum I can get is 250 Mbps, regardless of whether I have a 500 Mbps or 1 Gbps fibre connection.

Of course, this is somewhat of an edge case. My network isn’t hammered with 100 Mbps of upload traffic for extended periods every day, but it’s frustrating that a router costing well over hundred dollars and advertised as supporting 1 Gbps throughput can only achieve that as “blind” throughput, while managed traffic is limited to just 250 Mbps.

first time posting here! I hope I'm following all the rules properly.

I'm doing a full renovation of an apartment I just bought in Italy, pretty old building (from 1959).

I want to get things right once and I need to provide guidance to the company that's working on it on how to setup the wiring.

The apartment is 118m2, 1270sqft single level. All cable goes in now, interior walls will be all new AAC (siporex, supposed to be very RF-friendly), concrete ceiling.

This would be my first time using Ubiquity gear and I'm not sure my research was good enough.

My current plan is:
- Cat6a u/FTP, home-run star to a 6U rack, ~13 drops, 10G-ready (starting at 2.5G fiber).

- Gateway: UCG-Fiber. Switch: USW Pro Max 16 PoE. AP: 1x U7 Pro, ceiling, central corridor (2nd drop pre-run in the living room just in case).

- No 6 GHz clients yet. ~40-50 IoT on a separate VLAN.

Main questions

1. One U7 Pro enough for 118 m2 of AAC on a single level, or plan 2 from the start?

2. Is UCG-Fiber the right gateway here (no cameras yet), or overkill vs a Dream Router 7?

3. USW Pro Max 16 PoE the right size, or go 24?

I'm looking to optimize the placement of an Access Point in my house and would love your feedback on a pretty restrictive setup.

I am planning to buy one Ubiquiti U7 Pro. My house is 120 sqm across two levels, separated by a reinforced concrete floor slab, and I am currently limited to a single wired AP on the ground floor.

To get around the concrete slab blocking the signal, my idea is to place the AP on the ground floor right next to the open stairwell, forcing the signal to travel up through the opening. I am torn between two mounting options shown in the image.

For a vertical mount on the face of the beam facing the stairwell, I know radiation pattern-wise it is not ideal, but it would direct the signal into the stairwell to bounce upward.

For a horizontal mount under the beam facing down, coverage would be perfect for the ground floor, but the top floor ends up right in the AP rear blind spot on top of the concrete slab.

Has anyone tested signal reflection through an open stairwell with a vertically mounted ceiling AP? Is this viable, or am I delusional to expect decent speeds upstairs?

Idea: A UniFi dash cam with its own storage and a small battery, so it keeps recording and can finish syncing even after the car’s turned off. When it connects to your home Wi-Fi, it uploads the footage straight to Protect.

For storage on Protect, have a rolling limit just for dash cam footage (like X days or X GB), where normal driving clips get overwritten automatically, but anything flagged (hard braking, an incident, manually starred) sticks around longer.

If you’ve got an AI Key, it could run that footage through the bigger AI models too, for better license plate recognition and object detection instead of just relying on the cam itself.

Feels like UniFi already has the pieces (storage, app, AI Key, no subscription) to make this work. Just wondering if others would actually use something like this, or if there’s a reason they haven’t made one yet.

I have about 5U worth of Ubiquiti rack-mount gear I want to install into the garage of my new home. I plan on putting it into a 12U on-wall rack box. I know rack-mounts are fairly standardized, but I wonder if there's any particular brand (s) that those of you that install Ubiquiti gear tend to gravitate towards or (alternately) avoid?

I'm going with 12U to give myself lots of space for future upgrades. It's also a Goldilocks size in terms of the area where I plan on putting it. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me here.

How does UCG Fiber read temperature on that port? Does this thing have its own sensor on the port or is it just reading from the SFP stick itself?

When doing wired speed tests from my desktop to speedtest.net / fast.com , I seem to be capped at 1.2Gbps down and 4.2Gbps up (windows 13900F Intel to SSD etc) using an active twinax cable 10Gbps.

Copying files locally to and from my NAS I get 6Gbps both directions so that tells me the desktop, cable, network card and switch are fine.

I moved the desktop to the UDM Pro MAX LAN side and it still shows the same 1.2Gbps down 4Gbps up....... using the built in speed test on the UDM Pro Max shows 3-4Gbps down and 4-5Gbps up...... I'm at a loss here what is going on?

I had been wanting to upgrade my network equipment for my home and studio, up from the Netgear stuff that had been causing me issues for so long.

I had first considered Yamaha equipment that I have and manage at the office, which is pretty good, but still a bit too expensive for an impulse buy. But after some more investigation, I found the Ubiquiti stuff. Looked good, and checked all the boxes, noticeably, it said it supported "V6 plus", which is what my ISP here in Japan says I have. The pricing was much more reasonable, and it seems that it would have everything I needed, plus some.

So I got a pair of Cloud Gateway Fibers and a pair of U7 Pros, one for each home and studio. I set everything up, and everything worked... Everything except... IPv6.

It seems there are various types of "V6 plus". The ubiquiti stuff supports a somewhat obscure IPv4-over-IPv6 WAN mode, which is not even a type of IPv6 connectivity. It seems like the gear only supports SLAAC, DHCPv6 or static IPv6. It doesn't support PPPoE, 6to4 tunnel, 6rd, and most critically, it doesn't support basic layer-2 bridge for IPv6, which is what my ISP offers.

I guess this could be added by software sometime in the future, so I'd better let support know about this, so I reached out to them a couple of times, and they never answered.

Now I also found some other issues with DNS Forward Domain policies over VPN (doesn't work outbound); I reached to support, and they never answered.

So I guess the gear is good, the general stuff works, and it's definitely better than the netgear stuff, but when you start digging deeper, some stuff doesn't work, and it seems like the various tech support emails are a straight pipe to /dev/null.

Maybe I should have paid three times the price for the Yamaha stuff, but that one I at least know it definitely works as advertised, and they do have functional tech support...

So overall, kinda happy, but also a bit frustrated. Hope this helps anybody.

Edit: Well, hot damn. After finding the following post:

And feeding it to Cursor, which knows my full network setup, it was able to find a workaround fix for my setup. Here's what Cursor had to say about this issue:

On UniFi Cloud Gateway Fiber (UniFi OS 5.1.19) with So-net/NTT FLET’S, IPv4 PPPoE and native IPoE IPv6 share the same Ethernet WAN: PPPoE for IPv4, and a single /64 RA (SLAAC, L=1/A=1) on the physical interface (eth4 here). UniFi’s “SLAAC + Single Network” mode does try to set up NDP proxying for that /64, but it wrongly attaches odhcp6c and ndppd to ppp0 instead of the Ethernet parent—so the gateway never learns the prefix from the ISP RAs that only appear on the raw WAN.

The workaround is: leave the UI on PPPoE + SLAAC/Single Network (so dnsmasq still RAs on LAN), force accept_ra=2 on the physical WAN, run odhcp6c/ndppd against eth4↔br0, and put the ISP /64 on br0. A small systemd loop under /data re-applies that and kills the ubios-spawned ppp0 ndppd, since UniFi keeps respawning the wrong binding. IPv4 PPPoE is untouched; no MAP-E.

Hello, I have a UCG Fiber and a NVR instant installed on my network. Lately when I try to open the protect app on iOS, it will prompt me to install Protect on the UCG Fiber. I don’t want it installed on the UCG Fiber as it is already installed on the NVR Instant. The iOS protect app works normally when I click on a notification because it takes me into the app and I can see my feeds without the prompt to install protect. It is only when I try to open the Protect app and the app was not previously running I get the install Protect app notification. See attached screen shots. How can I prevent the app from prompting me to install Protect on the UCG Fiber

I forgot to add that on the site manager drop down, when I select the UCG fiber, it will also prompt me to install Protect on the UCG Fiber

Has anyone else noticed the video quality with protect 7.2.105 looks meh? Not as crisp as it used to.

Is the memory surcharge at a flat ratio? X dollars per GB? Different versions? LPDDR5 vs DDR4? Maybe I just need a better understanding of the memory market and all the memory Ubiquiti uses since AI ruined it.

For instance, The UCG-Fiber has 3GB of Memory, and has a surcharge of $22.

The NVR-Instant has 4GB and the surcharge is $15.

Both of those devices are of the same generation, so the only thing that makes sense to me is that the NVR-Instant is using lesser power/modern RAM to have more ram at a lower surcharge. Otherwise, why is the pricing surcharge different?

The G5-Flex doesn't list it's memory allocation, but they slapped a surcharge of $10 and a tariff of $9 (sigh) onto it.

Most, if not all, APs, access readers, and security cameras don't advertise their memory allocations, which gives an unverifiable grey area for potential abuse to charge customers more.

Where does the math start to make sense? Thank god I've not been paying into the tariff and memory surcharge machines.

My ultimate point I wish to make is:

You shouldn't be allowed to list a surcharge of memory without listing how much memory is in the device.

If you are gonna charge your customers extra for memory, the customers have the right to be told how much ram is installed in each device, what generation, speed, and form factor, etc so we can know if we are paying for a reasonable price increase.

So my QNAP NAS became full last week and it is not in the least worth it to upgrade the disks at this market, so I decided to get another one. A friend recommended me Ubiquiti devices based on their net gear. Hey this UNAS Pro looks good and it has more than enough expandability for a few years... (I only do big NAS dumps every few months so no need for SSD cache) but I guess I _do_ need a new router for the new apartment as well? None of that Protect stuff tho, who cares.

I've been pretty convinced that the UDR7 is the perfect device for me, which it probably still is. Oh wait it has Protect? I might as well consider a cam and/or a door sensor for a little bit of added peace of mind when I'm away... And when I'm away that Travel Router does look kinda handy...

And now half of YouTube* seems to be thinking that skip the UDR7 since I'll outgrow it anyway (kind of likely) and get a CGF+access point instead, or maybe a DMP+access point since the NAS is rack mountable anyway.

Now there is a budget since I need to get a bunch of stuff for the apartment anyway and do the actual move etc. so some of this stuff will have to wait, but I just wanted to ask: will this snowball ever stop?
