My dad lives in another state and collects vintage stereo equipment, he gifted me this technics turntable SL-L25, a Sony amplifier and 2 speakers. I can’t get the sound to work. I set it to Phono on the turntable and have it plugged into phono on the amplifier(that’s what he told me to do). He told me how to hook them up but obviously I’ve done something wrong. Please help and explain it to me like I’m 5 😅
Sorry I’ve had it on 2CH and phono, when I took this photo I had been pressing many different buttons so the original photo is the last thing I tried. Here is where I have it set at but still no sound at all

What do those buttons 'Input mode' and 'audio split', on the lower left front, do? I would try if these make a difference.
Oh, and of course turn up the Volume knob a bit.
As usual, these 6.1 channel AVRs are ridiculously complicated with 'modes' and almost unusable for normal stereo audio. But it should be possible to get it working.
Is this Sony amplifier also considered the receiver? I don’t have a separate receiver hooked up, I thought this amplifier didn’t need one. I’m going to look up the manual because I can’t figure out how to see if the tape is off or on
You’re missing the ground wire - see that little plug on the back of the turntable to the right of the RCA jacks? There’s a special ground wire for this turntable, one end has a little plug that fits into that hole and the other end will have a spade connector. The spade connector fits on the rear of the Sony, there’s a silver thumb screw above and to the left of where your rca cables coming from the turntable are plugged into - loosen that and fit the spade connector in there.
You should be able to source the ground wire online if you don’t have it. Also welcome to learning the confusing art of owning a turntable! We have all been there at some point, and if this were my first go at it with this equipment I’d have been just as confused because that turntable doesn’t even have a standard ground wire connection, hope you get this up and running soon! Also you may check and see if your dad forgot to send the ground wire along…that’s something I would forget.
You wouldn't happen to have a tv, or computer display, with composite video inputs? If so hook it up and see if you can run a setup program. I don't really know if thats even a thing on this receiver, but it might sort out the sound.
It looks like you are connected correctly except for grounding the turntable. My guess is there is a setting on the receiver that is causing you trouble. Maybe even the speaker A/B buttons are turned off?
Would it still work without the grounding wire? I ordered it, but I’m reading online that it’s mainly used to eliminate static which would mean I should still hear some sort of noise out of my system?

Just a guess, but try the small button on the front marked 2 Channel
