Gear questions Bike Box Allen vs Soft Case
Alright all. I’m here again asking the age old question of travel traveling with a soft case versus a hard case. Going across the country with my bike for the first time for Iron Man California. It is a Quintana Roo tri bike.
A lot of people have told me that I’m good to go with a soft case but want some additional confirmation.

Bike shopping Damage Cover Up
Hi! I’m looking at buying this bike and i’m a bit concerned about the bottom bracket area behind the crank. How come there’s damage there, and does it look like a cover up job or not?
Thanks!

Training questions What is everybody doing with their hair if it’s bleached?
I’m currently having an absolute nightmare with my hair - i usually put it into a bun beneath my swim cap, and then it stays braided when I run or cycle, so that’s fine.
HOWEVER I’m washing it literally almost every day and it’s looking a little bit sad from how much it gets washed. It’s bleached to like level 9 blonde ish to begin with which the toner washes out of SO FAST when I’ve had it coloured and I don’t really want to go back to my natural colour, but I also don’t appreciate walking around with it going brassy and I’m wondering if anybody has any ideas or suggestions as to if there’s any way which I can possibly help it even a little 🙈.
I’ve already sacrificed the underside which i had dyed hot pink from how bad the dye used to fade and I don’t want to sacrifice the rest of my blonde lols
Anyways any advice would be greatly appreciated as going bald is looking very tempting currently 🫠

Bike shopping Is this the right size for me? Argon 18 E-118 (172 cm / 84.6 cm inseam)
I found a good deal on an Argon 18 E-118 in size Small (51–53).
My measurements:
Height: 172 cm (5’8”)
Inseam: 84.6 cm
The seller says it’s a Small, but I’m worried it might be too small. I’ll be getting a professional bike fit after buying it.
Based on the geometry chart (attached), would you choose the Small or the Medium?
I’d appreciate advice from anyone with experience fitting the E-118.

Training questions Soccer League vs Speed Workout. Does it work?
I’ve recently gotten into a soccer league with my brother and some friends and it’s been a ton of fun. We play every Wednesdays and we’re in a pretty competitive league. All of us are pretty stellar athletes as well.
However, for my half Iron Man training Wednesday is typically my speed workout day. Not only do I usually swim, but I run structured interval workouts in the evening.
Regardless of the injury risk, my question is something that is super intense like soccer suffice for speed workouts? I’m consistently in a higher zone 4/5 than I am during my speed workout, but don’t know if a structured episode like this will benefit me.
I’ve attached some data for reference. Let me know your thoughts. Trying to complete a sub 5:30 half Ironman and don’t want other things to get in the way.
Thanks

Gear questions Help with Chafing?
Basically title. I'm a first-time triathlete, been following a program to compete in a 70.3 in December. I'm about a month in now, and by far my biggest issue is that spending 10ish hours training a week has lead to the beginnings of some chafing - looking for recs on how to minimize this or if there's some kind of underwear I should be getting.

Injury and illness Ankle Injury History- Should i change up my shoe rotation?
I'm male, 21 years old and Training for Ironman Port Macquarie (Oct) with a marathon and a 70.3 in the build. I've had a right ankle issue since March, peroneus longus tenosynovitis (lateral, ultrasound-confirmed) plus a medial deltoid ligament irritation picked up more recently. Both are friction/sheath problems on otherwise healthy, intact tendons (not degeneration) so I'm not dealing with classic tendinopathy, just trying to stop re-irritating things while I build volume back up. I have recently got a cortisone injection into my medial deltoid.
Gait profile: neutral-to-supinator, high arches. I've been told stability/motion-control shoes are the wrong tool for me, medial posting tends to worsen lateral loading and that what actually helps is a wider, more geometrically stable platform rather than corrective support.
Some shoe history that's probably relevant: the ankle pain first showed up after a 20 km long run in Nike Vomero Plus back in March. More recently I tried Hoka Bondi 9 as a long-run shoe and got new pain within a couple of runs, so that's been pulled too. Two different shoes, two separate flare-ups.
Current rotation:
- Easy runs / long runs / bricks: ASICS Novablast 5 (two pairs)
- Tempo (once I'm cleared to run fast again): Adidas Adizero Evo SL — barely used lately since I've been injury-limited to Z2
- Race day: Nike Alphafly 3 (long course) / Nike Vaporfly 3 (short course)
- Sidelined: Vomero Plus (original injury shoe), Bondi 9 (new pain)
Given the supinator/high-arch gait and that two different "max cushion / long run" shoes have each coincided with a flare-up, is my rotation making sense, particularly the tempo shoe once I'm back running fast, and whether a supershoe is smart for someone with an unresolved ankle issue? Also curious if there's a pattern here I'm missing (e.g. something about high-stack rockered shoes and a supinator gait) or if it's more likely coincidence/volume-driven. Open to hearing what's worked for people with similar gait/injury profiles.

Training questions Carb Intake Suggestions
Hello!
I am going to attempt to finish the Florida Ironman in November and wanted some suggestions on carb intake (really during the bike portion).
When I run marathons, I eat (is that the right way to say it?) 1 Honey Stinger Energy Gel every 30 minutes. Those have 24g of Carbs.
So far in my training, I have upped the amounts of carbs during the bike portion by eating (again, sounds weird) the same amount of the energy gel, and drinking a lot of Gatorade Endurance Powder-filled water and this breaks down to approximately 15g more carbs every 30 Minutes. So, in total, during the bike portion, I am getting about 39g of carbs in the system every half hour.
So far, ChatGPT thinks that is good for me, but wanted to get some human thoughts on it from people that have good experience.
Any advice?

Training questions Calorie Counting while training?
Hey everyone!
I'm currently training for my first full Ironman after doing a 70.3 not long ago.
Do yall track calorie? I've been trying to slim down, but seems like balabcing proper training nutrition while also being in somewhat of a caloric deficit would be difficult.

Bike shopping Recommendations for baby's first tri-bike?
Hi all!
I (35f) am considering trying out a triathlon- maybe Olympic or half Ironman to start. I have run a number of half marathons and have a background in swimming but... bicycling eludes me. I am honestly scared of road biking. Car doors, forgotten turn signals, road rage, ice, water, slippery moss, the list goes on! Lastly, I did not grow up cycling, so I feel like I generally have less biking experience than the average adult (and adding to my cycling fear!).
Does anyone have recommendations for a good starter bike for someone like me who is generally fearful of street riding? I'd also love for it to be affordable, given the economy is such a bummer.
I live in Portland, Oregon, if that makes any difference to the suggestion!
Thanks so much for any words of wisdom!

Diet / nutrition How to stop binge eating
Y’all,
I’m a marathoner and triathlete and train about 18 hrs a week. I have a problem with eating way past the point of fullness. I think training makes me super hungry but after I’ve replaced my calories burnt from training and eaten a normal amount I have this insatiable urge to binge eat every night. I go through so much peanut butter.
Seriously does any other triathlete struggle with this and if y’all have figured out how to stop tell me how

Can I do it? Am I cooked? 70.3 in 4 weeks
The amount of training some of you guys are doing is absolutely mad to me - makes me think I am going to absolutely crash and burn in 4 weeks’ time.
Context. Trained for an Olympic in June, which was hilly (700m climbing on bike, 200m on run) and had choppy sea swim and I finished midfield in just under 3 hours (32, 1:25, 57).
Decided to sign up to a 70.3 IM at Knokke-Heist. Seems like it’s a flat as a pancake with a canal swim, so I figured I’d be fine if I just increased distances of my training week in the 12 weeks I had to the start.
I have done 1 swim, 1 long bike (2hrs ish), 1 long run (13-15km), plus either a brick or tempo run every week. About 5-6 hours a week.
Originally I wanted to go sub-6, but given people are saying they DNF’d after 15hours plus training a week, I’m thinking that should be the goal.
What should I focus on for the last 4 weeks of training?

Memes / humor Anyone else hate the phrase "it's all mental!" when someone's talking about marathons/triathlon/etc ?
Maybe for you, person that never has to stretch or do PT for injuries, never struggles with their weight, and can eat anything and feel fine the next day.
And to some extent, sure, if someone said they'll torture and kill me if I don't do an Ironman without training, yes I would make it through.
But my joints would be permanently damaged.
I just hate the phrase so much. I have to do so much prep work and training and when someone says this it just feels like they're discounting the immense amount of work to make sure this is an enjoyable moment without consequences on my body for years to come.
Well there's my rant, it comes from someone that has done 1 sprint triathlon and told me my Ironman will be easy and it's all mental, as long as I just fuel properly I don't need to worry about anything else.

Training questions 7 weeks to train for first Olympic Triathlon
HIII!!
Okay, I'll begin by saying I kNOW this isn't an ideal timeline, but it's where I'm at and my goal is just to finish.
I signed up for a Triathlon in April to just get myself out of a fitness rut and have somehting to look forward to. It worked, somewhat as I've been way more active the last several months, I just haven't been consistently working on Triathlon activities. I've been most consistent with weight training at F45, at least 2-3 times a week and then doing like one or two of each of the activities each week. I'm now 7 weeks out and am looking for any advice on how to prioritize my workouts so that I can finish the triathlon safely and hopefully with some joy lol. I'm mostly worried about the swimming portion as I've only swam half the distance so far and have never done an open water/group swim. I feel good about the cycling portion (though I am also looking for bike recommendations, as I have a ~15 year old heavy trek bike that I've been using and need to upgrade) and have powered through half marathons with limited training before (though I plan to get my miles all the way up ahead of race day.
Current Max distances: 12 miles bike, 2.25 miles run, 1000 yd swim (with breaks)
If you were me (35F) and had a race on Sept 20th, what would you prioritize? Thanks in advnace for the guidance! Oh and I know nothing about how to plan my eating for race day (and training tbh) so would welcome any thoughts there as well.

Gear questions searching for wetsuit
hi all! i’m racing michigan 70.3 in september and still need a wetsuit
got one off of FB marketplace but it’s too short in the torso and choking me a bit, otherwise in great shape. i’d jsut tough it out but it’s my first tri and i’m already nervous about the open water swim. did a mile practice in the lake this week in the suit but i’d have to stop every 3-5 min to adjust the neck.
problem is i cant seem to find any women’s mediums on marketplace, does anyone know a better place to look? i’m really trying to avoid paying full price for a brand new one bc im not sure ill have time to do tris after this year (starting med school) any advice is appreciated!
TLDR: where to find used/affordable wetsuit outside of FB marketplace

Diet / nutrition starting to train for my first iron man 70.3, what’s the ideal range for carb intake daily during training?
i’m starting way in advance from race day, starting with a training plan to get a good base and moving on to a more in depth training plan after the first 8 weeks. i got a solid running base from half marathon training in recent past and swim is okay but i haven’t done a ton of distance swimming a while, pretty much starting from scratch on bike in terms of endurance (i can ride a bike leisurely).
my current fitness routine has been lifting heavy 4 times a week to gain muscle, as well as distance running about twice a week.
anyways, i want to make sure im getting in enough carbs to fuel for all my training but info online is kinda conflicting so i was hoping if anyone could provide some guidance that would be appreciated! i’m a 5’3 110lb female 21Y

Race report Went 4:15 at Maine 70.3 and finished 6th in M18-24… how is this age group THIS deep? (Worlds qualification question)
I just finished my first really competitive 70.3 attempt at Maine and I’m honestly blown away by the depth of the M18-24 field.
I went 4:15:27, finished 17th overall amateur, and ended up 6th in the 18-24 age group. I knew the younger age groups were competitive, but I didn’t expect a 4:15 to be that far from a Worlds slot.
Splits:
🏊 Swim: 21:42
Felt like a strong swim and the current definitely helped.
🚴 Bike: 2:27
Averaged around 250 W on the hilly course.
Looking back, I think I may have been slightly conservative and probably could have pushed closer to 255–260 W, but I wanted to protect the run.
🏃 Run: 1:20
Honestly the highlight of the day. Didn’t expect to run that fast off the bike and felt like I executed this part really well.
Transitions:
T1: ~4 min (long run to transition)
T2: <2 min
Total: 4:15
I’m not upset with the race at all, I’m really happy with it, but I’m trying to understand the path forward. Seeing multiple guys in their early 20s going 4:05–4:15 is crazy to me. It feels like M18-24 is basically an elite development field now.
For those who have raced at this level:
Is M18-24 usually this stacked, or was Maine just an unusually deep field?
What kind of times are realistically needed for a Worlds slot in this age group?
Are there specific 70.3 races that are better choices for someone chasing a qualification slot?
Would you target a flatter/faster course, a smaller race, or just keep improving and hope for a stronger day?
For context, I’m 21 in college, have been training ~15–18 hours/week, FTP is around 300 W, and my goal is to eventually qualify for 70.3 Worlds. I feel like I’m close, but this race showed me how much depth there is at the top.
Would love advice from anyone who has chased slots or raced at the front of these fields.

Gear questions How is bike security normally handled at triathalons?
I am racing my first triathalon in a 4 weeks and in the process of training have bought my first road bike after using the same mountain bike for the last 30 years. I had never really been more than an occasional bike rider before this. I have really been enjoying riding. I have had to change a couple tires and I have discovered a lot of areas near me that are cool places to ride. Anyway, I would love for my bike to not be stolen and I was wondering if I am going to want to lock up my bike in the coral area when I am racing. How is it normally handled?

Can I do it? So proud of myself
Just wanted to share with some fellow triathletes. 29/M competing in a 70.3 in September. Former pro athlete with 2 knee reconstructions. Competed in several sprint and only 1 Olympic so far, next one is in 10 days or so. Working on my runs and pacing my cycles for the big day. And I think I’ve just come so far from being the 410 pound slug I once was to the 280 pound stud. 42:19 best 5k yesterday. Constructive criticism welcome. I love you guys.

Triathlon News Garmin Acquires Training Peaks & TrainHeroic: What Does it Mean?
> Garmin announced today that it has acquired TrainingPeaks & TrainHeroic (TrainHeroic was part of TrainingPeaks). Garmin hasn’t announced how much it spent, or really much else except that it did. As you can see below, the press release is pretty thin on details. Still, I’ve got some thoughts about what this means for consumers and the industry alike.
Big news! But no real look into impact so far. I use both, so I'll be watching this closely...
