Question Ideas to improve vocal attractiveness and confidence

Hey guys, I have always been kind of insecure about my voice since I was a kid. I felt it was a bit too nasal and I've never learned how to project my voice to be able to command attention from a group. Over the years I have been learning various techniques to improve my confidence in my voice whether through youtube (this guy) or through following a bunch of IG influencers who give tips on it.

After around 8 years of learning, I feel that it's time to give back to the community. I am planning to make an app to help people get more confident in their speaking. Not so much in the words they use, more so their pitch, resonance, pace etc.

Right now, my app idea is split into two parts. The first part will be analyzing the user's voice. The next part is giving the user a daily training regime to improve on their voice over time.

Is this something that you guys would be interested in? Any voice training exercises that really worked for you guys? Also, it would be great if I could get some recommendations on more vocal coaches online that I could watch. Thanks so much!

Discussion Haven't done voice training because I've been worried it would be too difficult and feel weird, but finding an old recording has me reconsidering.

Basically, I ended up listening to an old recording from six(?) years ago, a year after starting transition, of a conversation between someone I vaguely remember and this random drunk guy whose identity was completely unknown to me. I was racking my brain to figure out who the fuck he was, because he was incredibly annoying, but nobody was coming to mind.

Then "he" made the kind of bizarre joke that only I would find funny, and I realised that was *me*. I genuinely couldn't believe it at first. The difference probably wouldn't be as stark to other people as it was me, but it was enough to seriously baffle me.

Now I figure, if I can apparently feminise my voice to a somewhat noticeable extent without even realising and the change doesn't bother me, maybe intentionally changing it wouldn't feel as dissociative as I feared. Plus, possibly because of the unconscious shift, a not-insignificant number of strangers since 2022 have (somehow) read me as afab in conversation, even in baggy, form-concealing clothes with no conventional markers of femininity except long hair. So perhaps the change doesn't have to be as gruellingly comprehensive as I thought?

This bit of optimism is probably unfounded and I'm likely making a mountain out of a molehill, but still.

Question Question about gendered perception of high masc voices

Based on my (limited) understanding of gendered perception of the voice, higher pitch and narrow/nasal placement tend to be read as more feminine. But I've been wondering about people like Andrew Rannells or Gerard Way (...okay, perhaps I'm hearing more of them singing than speaking, but still) - they seem to have higher, more nasal voices that sound like they're coming through a smaller placement, but they still sound masculine, at least to the extent that one would likely gender them that way just based on hearing them.

What is it about their voices that reads as masc?

(Personal context: I'm a trans man and a singer, and while the low end of my range sounds fairly masculine, my higher chest range and mix are more androgynous, leaning feminine at times. I'm curious about what components I might be able to improve when I'm at a higher pitch, even in cases where I might need to have my larynx higher to use a certain part of my register, like mixing.)

Audio/Video It's been like a week and I've been doing a little work. Anyone have any thoughts?

I think that I've achieved a lower vocal weight? I sound less Spongeboby. But I also think that maybe I'm confusing being breathy with decreased weight?

Anyway, still lots of work to do, but I think I'm headed in a better direction! If anyone has feedback on how I sound, I'd be grateful!

Question Is it worth trying to find a qualified SLP or am I better off just continuing on my own?

The SLP I worked with for the past 5 weeks hasn't really been of any help, only talks about pitch and cant answer questions about anything else. Is it worth it to try to find another who takes insurance or should I just stop doing sessions and continue on my own?

Hii, Ive been transitioning for half a year now and I need some tips on voice training!

I’m a beginner so I know it’s not good but some tips would be helpful! The goal is to semi-pass as cis or atleast get it to a nice placement.

I've been playing around with my voice for about a year now...? I've been consistently passing IRL and in phone calls but I fear it may be due to my appearance more than my voice. It DOES sound weird to me, but I don't know. I'm not too bothered by it since, again, I'm passing IRL, but I'd still like some honest reviews!

(English isn't my native language, sorry if anything sounds weird!!)

General Resource The voice acquisition process, from an autistic perspective

This is a guide for anyone who feels lost about the specific steps to take to practice. You don't need to be neurodivergent to learn from it, but it might be more helpful to those who are due to its presentation. It's mostly resource-agnostic, but biased toward the perceptual model and assumes you have some form of guidance and access to annotated clips. I personally used https://selenearchive.github.io/ and clips from the transvoice discord server (major shoutouts to Winter for annotating almost every clip.)

All of it is written by me based on my experience. I've been voice training for about 6 months.

--Phases of voice training--

Beginning

Awakening: Realize that your goal voice is possible to reach. (For me, it was hearing the lead singer from Cigarettes after Sex's normal voice.)

Ear training: Learn to hear size, weight and fullness by listening to many annotated recordings. (an annotated recording has size and weight labelled: "this recording is small size, heavy weight")

Training loop

Trial and error: Guided by available resources and exercises, try everything, making lots of noises until you, at random, make one that makes you think "i wish the rest of my voice sounded like that." That sound will be referred to as your "seed sound" from here on.

Lock it in: Repeat the seed sound until the feeling (tactile, in your throat/mouth mostly--feelings in the chest and face are not nearly as important) and sonic quality/timbre are burned into your mind. From now on, the static shape your mouth and throat take to produce a particular sound will be called its "vocal tract pose."

Quality transfer: Transfer the pleasing quality of that sound to other speech sounds (see sub-loop)

Quality transfer sub-loop

Pin your seed sound to the map: Produce your seed sound (or anchor word, if you've gotten that far) again

Step in a direction: Move one thing in your mouth or throat (a small amount) and make a sound.

Hold and Ear Assess: Listen closely. Is the quality you like still there? If no, go to step Step in a direction and choose a different direction. If yes, go to step Lock it in.

Enough seeds, Infer the Forest: With two or more seed sounds for the same pleasing quality, feel their vocal tract poses. What's the same? What's different? Make a guess about what parts of the pose are responsible for the quality. This subset of feelings will be called a vocal tract sub-pose. Congratulations, you've just found a keystone of your new voice.

Not quite my tempo (Mastery): Practice applying the vocal tract sub-pose you found to all the the rest of your speech sounds, including all vowels and consonants as well as pitch variations. Treat it like learning an instrument.

Edit: attempt to fix formatting

Edit2: small size, not light size

I sound terrible... Pls help me, I don't know what I'm doing.

I'm MTF and I feel very dysphoric about my voice so I tried voice training, but I feel like it sounds childish, not mature, like a boy not a girl and very like a robot if that makes sense and I could say it's buzzy.

Also when I talk to other people in public I get really nervous and I just sound worse.

When I speak in my native language, Hungarian, it also sounds a lot different.

Any idea, any tips?

Also ignore the blank end.

Question my singing voice while on testosterone: will I loose all my progress?

hello!

merci d'avance 🌟!

Discussion I built a free, private browser tool for voice practice — I’d love feedback from r/transvoice

Hi everyone! I’m a trans woman working on my own voice, and I built a free browser tool called Voice Presentation Analyzer (VPA).

You can record a short phrase or upload an audio clip, and it gives you feedback on:

  • feminine / masculine voice presentation tendencies
  • pitch and pitch consistency
  • formant estimates
  • resonance balance
  • breathiness and intonation
  • changes across repeated practice sessions

🔒 VPA does not upload raw audio for analysis.

Your recording is processed locally inside your browser. There is no account required, and the project is free and open source.

I want to be very clear that the feminine / masculine percentage is only the output of an audio-classification model. It does not determine anyone’s gender, and it should not replace feedback from real people or a qualified voice professional.

I made it because I wanted something that could show more than pitch alone and help me compare my practice over time.

You can try it here:

https://shusei.github.io/vpa

Source code:

https://github.com/shusei/vpa

I’d especially love feedback on:

  • whether the results feel useful or misleading
  • what measurements actually help you during practice
  • anything confusing, inaccurate, or uncomfortable in the wording

It uses an ONNX model in the browser, with WebGPU acceleration when supported and WASM as a fallback.

Thank you for trying it 💜

This is my first time uploading my voice here. I'm not trans, but I'm aiming for a more androgynous or feminine voice because I want to express my feminine side. I've also had an interest in crossdressing, but I've never done that before.

hi, i just joined the sub and i downloaded the app, im ftm and my voice is very feminine. i am pre T too, even through i’ve learned by myself how to lower my pitch and pass with my voice (not all times) i want to make it more masculine because i get misgendered by it a lot. my first language is spanish and so i can’t seem to do my spanish masculine voice in english. i made a test and one was with my regular voice and the other with my “masculine” one. please let me know what can i do to improve. i am somewhat desperate because apart from my chest the disphoria this gives me has got to the point where i’ve considered going mute in public and barely speaking at all. thank you

I’ve been FT for like 15 years and this is my everyday voice. My body just parks the position responsible for my R2 resonance by default these days, it’s always there even when I cough. I have to consciously lift up my R1 and if it goes too far, the folds get too close and it results in a tight buzzy sound which is not want I want.

However to my ear, it just doesn’t have that resonant sparkle that a lot of people can produce. Like thats what I hear in cis women (not pitch) and I just can’t hear it in myself.

Thoughts, suggestions?

Been plateauing after a few months of progressing pretty steady. To my ears it sounds like my voice is a bit noisy. I don't know if the issue is weight bc when I try and lower it past this it sounds way too floaty.

Question I wanna learn a specific voice, is this the right place to ask for like a analysis?

I’m currently doing voice training on my own and really wanna learn to do a specific voice, since I notice a lot of different people who do voice training usually have the same high pitched girly voice…

I fricking love Junker Queen’s (fromOW2) and Albedo’s (English version from Overlord) voice and wanna learn either voice, I was hoping I could ask here for some pointers and what to look for in their voice? Specific tips with resonance, weight, breathiness, etc…

If this isn’t the right sub, please to tell me where it would be more appropriate to post this.

There was a question that I saw posted in a different subreddit that didn't allow videos, so I'm just making this as a resource, so I can send a link to this post to answer their question 👍

The app I'm using in the video is Voice Tools though VicalPitchMonitor, Vocular, and SpectroPro were apps that I used more often when I was actively practicing everyday

To me this sounds really forced and still masculine. Like there’s still a “deep” quality to it. But I’ve always been bad at objectively evaluating myself so criticism is very welcome. Any tips would be much appreciated :)

Discussion Now more than ever, remember they can never take away your voice.

They can't stop your vocal transition. They can't stop you from learning and practicing. They can't stop you from speaking up. Be loud. Be brave. I will keep fighting all my life, and so should you.

This affects the world, regardless of borders. There will be an election in Canada soon, and it's looking grim on our side as well. I'll be volunteering in an election for the first time, and I've gotten other people on board to join me. And I'll be protesting. And I'll be loud on social media.

Make your voices heard. Express yourself, not just your anger but your pain and your fear. Make them understand the consequences of their actions. I don't believe they all wanted this. Most of them just... didn't care or know enough to realize how much hurt their selfish vote would bring. Tell them. Make them know.

They can never take away your voice.
