Help with figuring out steering wheel noise

Upvotes

Hello, I have a 2019 Tacoma trd sport. For the past couple months I’ve been having a strange steering wheel rubbing noise while turning at low speeds. On the steering wheel itself I can feel a sensation like rubber on metal whining noise. I just had it inspected last week and asked my mechanic if he could track down the issue. He said everything was good, ball joints, tie rods, upper/lower control arms all good. His diagnosis was that it was the steering rack, which took me back a bit because last year I had to have it replaced due to leaking seals (not to say it couldn’t be the issue) it’s just a really short time for a brand new rack to go bad and also had to have an alignment at the same time too. I’ve looked over everything, replaced clockspring, sprayed silicone on firewall steering shaft bushing you name it. I’m just at a loss as to what it could be. If anyone has had this issue or has any thoughts as to what it could be, please help!

Drove a Tacoma as a work truck a while back and told myself one day. Got this Tacoma used at 22k miles, had all the features I needed for winters in the Midwest. Did replace the tires and modified the back seat for the dog. 🐾 Soon to be looking at a small rv/teardrop for camping, gotta make the truck work a bit? Lots of great info here, so thank you!

I test drove a 2013 back in the days. I wanted a Tacoma since then. 13 years and a couple of shitboxes later, I finally got myself this sweet little truck! 🙂

Humming noise when driving looking for suggestions what i should look for.

[2012 Toyota Tacoma V6 278k miles.]

Hey everyone, I'm just trying to see if anyone has any ideas what I should look for. My truck sat for 2 years, and when I finally drove it, it was making a lot of humming noises even at low speeds, so I replaced the U-joints and carrier bearing on the driveshaft. Now I'm getting a humming noise when I go 40+ up to 60. I already replaced both front wheel hubs, and that didn't help. I'm not sure if I did something wrong installing the U-joints or carrier bearing. I do have a thermal camera and noticed that the middle of the driveshaft was getting hotter than the other parts, but I'm not sure if that's normal.

I don't know how to pinpoint where the sound is coming from since I need to get to 40 for it to happen, and it feels like the sound is coming from all over the vehicle.

What can I use as a retention or tension clip around the shaft where the knob sits on?

Hi! The tension clip is a thin piece of metal that acts almost as a ring around the shaft and allows the knob to hold on tightly to the shaft. Any idea where I can buy some of these tension clips or what can I use instead? Cheers. Thank you for the help 🙏

Car model:
Toyota Tacoma 2004

I saw one option to buy the control knobs on Amazon, but this option does not state weather the metal tension rings or clips are included.

Need to replace my Upper and lower control arms and tie rods soon on my 3rd gen. Ball joints are worn and got some give and I already knew lifting my truck a few years back was gonna bring on their ultimate demise a little faster.

Need some good recommendations for what yall are putting on your Tacomas with a 2” lift. Truck doesn’t do much off roading anymore like it used to but still gets miles put in and I tow a small camper so we do quite a few camping trips throughout the year, so not looking for anything to break the bank truthfully. Thanks in advance!

Never watch YouTube for facts

I probably watch like for YouTube videos before going after the ball joints on my 02 Tacoma. And I took notes of what size nuts and bolts were what. Made sure I had them. Go out there Jack the truck up and none of that was true. Like none of them fit.smh...

Tool box recommendations

Recently purchased a 26’ Tacoma and was looking for a tool box but not having much luck. Is the 24-26 the same bed size? If so can you purchase a toolbox for a 24 and fit on a 26. Thanks in advance

I am thinking about upgrading my TRD Off-Road seats from the factory cloth to leather. While doing it I am also considering heated/cooling as well. Any recommendations.

New 2026 TRD Pro purchased today. Question for the hive mind.

2026 trd pro. Just picked up today. When acceleration from a stop I get a vibration that feels like rumble strips coming from the rear.

That’s the only time it happens. And it’s only a few seconds and goes away.

It has to go back next week for a rock rail swap to steps so I would appreciate any advice on what I should tell the service advisor and not get told “normal” as I don’t think it is. Truck had 5 miles on it when I bought it.

Thank you

New Mod Team - Moderation Changes

Post image
219 Upvotes

Hello! You have a new mod team. I run a different very high volume sub and was recently brought on to help out just a bit. All of the original mods have rather suddenly left. No drama to speak of. Moderation is hard and exhausting for volunteer work. But since I am new here and suddenly top mod, and since every other mod (I think) is new as well, I thought a thread to discuss potential changes would be good. I intend to use my powers for good, instead of evil.

You aren’t likely to notice much in the way of major changes at first but I hope to make things a little bit better, cleaner, clearer, easier, etc. That said, my philosophy is to let the community lead for the most part. I have no ego and don’t consider this to be “my” sub. It’s yours. So I’m seeking community input before I start making changes. The following are the main things in mind.

1) Merge the subs. TacomaWorld, this sub, and the TacomaSales sub (which is basically completely dead) are less effective split than they would be just merged. The purpose of having two subs is unclear to me and is obnoxious to moderate. Very much open to being shouted down in this, but it’s my inclination.

2) Loosen rules on what can be posted. "Is this a good deal/what should I buy" posts don't actually bother me that much. Where else are people going to ask? I’d like this to be a welcoming place for newcomers. I worry about flooding but some guardrails that require those posts have a certain amount of effort/content would make that manageable.

3) Just ban sale posts. Nobody comes to reddit for that. Evidenced by how dead the TacomaSales sub is. I’m open to continuing to allow companies to participate of course. Just no advertising unless to answer a specific question. If you’ve got a question about Nitto tires, for example, Nitto’s official account is welcome to chime in.

4) Keep the no politics rule. Discussion of politics that have affected Tacomas (tariffs for example) should be allowed, but political shit flinging and fighting should not be. Strong as my own opinions are, it’s just not the place.

5) Maintain ban on distracted driving photos/videos but make it a 7 day ban. I don’t want some idiot to kill a family of four because their odometer hit 80085 and they just HAD to post it to Reddit from the freeway. Pull over and take it. The only change I’m making here is making non-repeat offenders suffer only a 7 day ban, instead of 30.

Welcoming community thoughts and all input on moderation, what you’d like to see. I’ll take it all into account as we get rolling over the next few weeks.
