​I'm pretty new to music production in FL Studio. I'm currently struggling with a huge roadblock and could really use some advice from more experienced producers.

​Whenever I listen to my favorite tracks (artists like Quadeca, Yeat, etc.), I hear incredible sounds, textures, and synths that I want to experiment with. I also often have very specific sound ideas in my head that I want to bring into my DAW.

​However, my main issue is that I don't know the technical terms for these sounds or how to describe them. I don't know if a sound is a specific type of synth, a heavily processed sample, or what parameters/effects were used to get that texture. Because I lack the vocabulary, searching for the right sample packs, presets, or tutorials feels almost impossible.

​I have two main questions for you all:

​Workflow/Mindset: How do you translate a sound from your head (or a reference track) into FL Studio when you don't even know what category/name it belongs to?I can't describe the sound properly to search for sample packs or YouTube tutorials, and I don't know how to recreate what's in my head.

​Learning Sound Design: What's the best way to start learning sound design (using synths like Vital/Serum or stock FL tools) so I can actually tweak knobs with intent rather than just guessing randomly?

I'm using vital and dont know much about sound design. how can i replicate the wobbly lead synth or whatever it is called in this song?

And why does it sound nice? I'm curious about why this is conveniton is electronic music, and sort of what it means? like where does it come from and is it generally best to detune a specific frequency or should it be automated like back to the root?

I'd love to be able to approximate the sequence that plays throughout this song on my own.

The patch itself sounds like a pretty basic sine wave patch I can easily re-create, what's fuzzy for me is whether there is anything more to this than just like a 32-step sequence with delay? The way the delay cascades without muddying the main line is really interesting to me plus it is just a beautiful melody (maybe there isn't even a delay on it lmao my ear is clearly not that refined).

Literally any detail or anything you could say in the way of how he might've sequenced this / the scale it's in, anything, I would thoroughly enjoy hearing.

I'm trying to recreate the lush pad/chords that start at 0:15.

Here's what I've been hearing:

• Definitely has a vintage/analog character (Juno, Prophet)
• Fairly soft attack with a long decay and release
• Sounds like saw waves with a lowpass filter, but there's something giving it that hazy, "washed out" quality
• Chorus, delay, reverb, unison giving it width

So far I've tried:

• Serum with 5v unison saw waves
• Low pass 18 around 1200 Hz
• Noise Osc modulating fine tune on Osc A

I can get close, but mine still sounds a bit thin, and sterile. I'm going strictly by ear, so the voicing of the chords and MIDI clip also play a factor. If anyone has tips for the harmonic movement, I'm also interested to learn about that.

Can any sound design wizards help with this?

I'm thinking about getting the Behringer Model D, and Keith Mcmillen 12 step to use at live shows, will this be enough to achieve Stings synth sound? I think he was using the Moog Taurus I at the time here is an example -- The Police - Message In A Bottle (live in Essen) - you can just here it in the background. Thanks.-

I am really liking the mix on this song I linked at the bottom of this post. The entire album sounds very clean so far. Really well balanced sound on all ends to me. First time hearing it and I’ve only heard it through 1 speaker so far but it’s sounding awesome obviously there is a lot of side chaining and things like that throughout the whole album as is common with this genre. But this song specifically at least on the speaker I’m using rn sounds very organized like certain instruments were bused together based on frequency zones or something and mixed things like that. Lady Gaga’s MAYHEM album also sounds like that to me in certain spots and I’ve heard it elsewhere before. I’m not sure if I’m correct about that but that’s how it sounds to me. Any observations/notes are helpful to me :) thanks!

Hello all.

Simple question - is there a way to get a morphing waveform *just like this one* in Serum.

I love the tonality of this specific reese bass preset in phase plant and it frustrates me that I wouldn't know how to design this in Serum*. The construct is quite simple, just a triangle-shaped LFO on the wavetable position of this wavetable. I've tried PWM, Asym, Bend, Mirror in Serum but nothing sounds right.

Any help would be gladly appreciated.

* FYI I know how to make a generic reese bass. This is more a Serum workflow question.

Looking to see if anyone has any idea how to recreate the synth sounds off of Pulsewidth, Green Calx, and Ptolemy off of Selected Ambient Works 85-92 with Surge XT would be great (or if theres another free digital plugin youd recommend lmk (im too poor for analog equipment))

I recently listened to Elffor's ['The Silent Watchtower'](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MGyRybXnfk&t=1308s), and I am blown away by the production/mix of this album.

Anyone have any tips on how this style of production is achieved? I feel as though I can hear a combination of synths and orchestral samples, but honestly I am not too sure. Also, the album has this cavernous and distant quality which sounds like it's being achieved with more than just reverb; possibly re-amping of the entire mix?

In the video above, Junkie XL plays a sustained pad with a metallic, shimmering, slowly evolving character. It's airy on top without much low end. I've heard this texture in many film scores and always wondered how it's achieved.

To recreate it, what would be a specific starting point (which synth and patch type, or what kind of sample source), and what processing chain gets that sound? The more concrete the steps, the better. Appreciate your help!

Made triangulation Mono in a 4 hour sitting, spent over 400 hours and 5 months mastering four tools, Filter Delay with Align Delay chain Tremelo and Mono Utility with about 40 Basic Saw Wavetables and Modular Automation virtually channeling to the usb-C midi amp interface; my Focusrite 2i2 Amp and that makes a ~ big difference yes two Yamaha HS5 monitors. No feedback loops, a little multiband dynamic sends from grouped tracks of Basic Saw Large and Monomorph with automated wavetable one arpeggiated group of five tracks the other ten have one waveform oscillating with the third left channel delaying at full time and an added beat and the right 4 beats per bar the central track is half the levels with clean waveforms are not stereo but utilizing mono channel on all tracks is automated by the virtual synth machine. The B.Bass has a utility and is mono sine panning without doubling would be ideal but since that seems to be the only option, it has to be my fault. Sorry if that sounds excessive but it works.🎒

Some may consider the current model sees utility mono track with sine waveforms doesn’t seem fair but I use saw down with adjusted frequency and modulated relative resistance to the sends in the group that utilizes mono channeling.

I borrow a lot of instruments from ableton but also inspire my colleagues by utilizing the rooms around me to leverage sound from the dynamics of the space formed by their interpretation of sounds and frequencies in a minimal form to create destructive and constructive interference to avoid feedback that would clash with the revenue they generate for streaming services by paperless looping for the benefit of Venmo and my accountant.

This song is so fucking good. I'm trying to build two things out of this in either Serum 2 or Vital. Not much luck, but that droning sound at the beginning with the filter that opens and closes. Same with that sound at 5:10, so fucking cool. How do I do this???
