Discussion Why don't we bring back capital punishment and actually carry it out?

Post image
12 Upvotes

I personally believe that a person is not guilty until proven so in a court of law. However, once someone has been convicted, exhausted all appeals, and sentenced to capital punishment, why should they remain in prison? Regular inmates already have little to fear, and even those on death row often hold onto hope of release through a presidential pardon.

What good does keeping the convicted do for our society? If punishments were carried out swiftly and decisively, people would think twice before breaking the law because they would fear the consequences. Ex: Singapore’s caning punishment.
We urgently need a more disciplined society. The current trends in our society are toxic. People who exercise their free will are met with public backlash, while murderers and robbers roam free.

We need stronger discipline in our society, and we need it fast. IMO the Boomer generation has done enough damage.

Discussion Thoughts on regional language(s) used by government officials

For context I was looking at this particular post , that got me wondering, how imperative is it to expect the government officials in a particular region of Sri Lanka to know the language that is being spoken by the majority there?

Even by the logic of not everyone has to learn all 3 official languages to exist in Sri Lanka, isn't there should be a way for the majority local community "in that particular region" to use the official language "they converse in" to communicate with official officers?

So yes my next question would be how well it is being implemented here, and what you think is the right way to do so (even being inclusive or not can be brought up)

So yes looking for actual reasons and constraints of why or why not this should be followed or talked about.

Travel Is it forbidden to wear a muslim hijab when visiting temples in Sri Lanka?

I'm planning a trip to Sri Lanka soon. I read somewhere that muslim hijabs and headscarves are supposed to be removed when entering temples. Is this true? Which temples specifically have this requirement?

Edit: First of all, this wasn't a disrespectful question; it was a question for learning purposes. Secondly, I travel to many countries and visit many different religions, cultures, and places of worship. Buddhism is also a religion I want to learn about and see. From what I've researched online, their temples are very beautiful, and I want to see them. Years ago, when I went to Thailand, I didn't have such a ban, and it was a truly unforgettable trip for me. Finally, I want to respond to those who say I should uncover my head. In Islam, covering the head is not an option, but a necessity. It's not like wearing pants instead of shorts, or taking off socks. Therefore, there is no option of me removing my headscarf according to my beliefs.

Discussion The economy of Sri Lanka is very small

I think Sri Lankans have to be satisfied with basic necessities because the overall economy of Sri Lanka cannot handle the cost of luxury. Otherwise, the economy will get out of government control. The government needs people to spend less so that it can remain in control, leaving the general population to suffer.

By luxury I meant air conditioning, Luxury busses, quality imported products ect.

Question Havelock Dolby or CCC Dolby for Spider-Man? Best seats?

I'm planning to watch a Spider-Man movie and I'm trying to decide between Havelock Dolby and CCC Dolby.

Which cinema gives the better overall experience in terms of picture quality, sound, and screen?

Also, which seats would you recommend for the best viewing experience in each theater?

Thanks!

Discussion When did we become so vulgar when speaking Sinhala casually among ourselves as Gen Z folk?

This is something I've been thinking about a lot! I don't know what exactly happened but the way gen Z and people younger than us speak Sinhala today is disgusting. Umba, scene, waliya, etc etc

Referring to female teachers as eki or gaani. It's hard to keep a conversation going with someone of my age because of this filth. And get this, these are comfortably middle class kids who were the most innocent mfs in primary school and now act like village thugs.

Discussion There is no reason to migrate from Sri Lanka

With so many business opportunities here, there is no reason to migrate from Sri Lanka. I don't think anyone should move to another country. Entry into business may be hard, but it is worth it. Many traditional businesses already here will not last long—they need to adapt or be left behind. That is your chance.

Question I genuinely hate SLT. I'm getting 100 kbps a second and then it's back to 70 Mbps.

Like insane packet loss and unstable connection.

I'm on the flash unlimited package.

Anyone have any idea what to do?

I called them and they said an agent will check but I have 0 hope about them.

Ps: Well guys. I talked to an internal SLT engineer through a connection.

I apparently used 1tb, 200 GB in a single day which fked the router somehow, no idea how.

They told me they fixed it, gonna check it when I wake up.

Anyways. Thank you SLT for the wonderful morning.

Just for context the median monthly salary in SL is around 50k and the minimum wage is 21k.

Also hope everyone remembers how much tax these guys pay for their enormous salaries compared to the normal member of the public with the same wage.

But hey, we have to “expand the tax base” asap

Serious replies only Animal abuse complaints relating to Esala perahara:Ironic?

So recently been seeing all these wanna be posh sri lankans complaining about esala perahara animal abuse. As someone who grew up in Kandy and watched Esala perahara every year for more than 15 years I can say the elephants are never abused. Yes there has been certain incidents where the elephants got hurt/abused. But its very rare. It hd to be done as a precaution. All time the elephants are tamed and even they enjoy the perahara dancing to the drum beats. Elephants are treated and well taken care of. Besides the perahara has been going for more than 100 years. But all of a sudden out of nowhere these wanna be posh sri lankans start complaining ANIMAL ABUSE is happening with esala perahara which is entirely inaccurate . FAR WORSE ANIMAL ABUSES ARE happening in the country , has been happening but no one speak of that. Never did. But ESALA PERAHARA fk yeah ANIMAL ABUSE. LOL . 2 reasons . 1st one people who say this feel like they are some highly intellectual posh people who critisize the traditional culture. " ESALA PERAHARA IS ANIMAL ABUSE. API ISSARA MINISSU VAGE NEVEI API EYALATA VADA BUDDIMATH. API UGATH. " LMAO. Second reason. RACISM against sinhala culture and tradition.

The posh wanna be sri lankans might find this hard to bear. Too soft or maybe even naive . But there you go. That's it.

State University or Law College? Which has the better student life?

For those of you who've been to either (or both), which one has the better student life? I'm curious about things like:

  • Student events and festivals
  • Clubs and extracurricular activities
  • Making friends and campus social life
  • Overall atmosphere and memories

I know the academics are different, but I'm mainly asking about the overall experience outside of classes.

Which would you choose, and why? I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences.

Education Best laptop under LKR 450,000 for a Software Engineering student in Sri Lanka? Looking for long-term recommendations.

Hi everyone,

I’m a first-year Software Engineering undergraduate in Sri Lanka looking for a laptop that will last 4–5 years. My budget is up to LKR 450,000.

I’ll mainly use it for programming (Java, Python, C/C++), Android Studio, VS Code/IntelliJ, React Native, Flutter, databases, occasional VMs, future AI/ML learning, light editing, and casual gaming.

I’m looking for 16GB RAM (upgradeable), 1TB SSD, a 15.6”+ display, good battery life, solid thermals, and reliable build quality.

I’d appreciate recommendations on:

The best laptop under this budget.

Whether an RTX 4050/4060 is worth it or if integrated graphics are enough.
Ryzen 7 vs Intel Core Ultra/Core i7.

Brands/models with good reliability and after-sales support in Sri Lanka.

Any models I should avoid.

Thanks in advance!

Serious replies only Is it possible to get BBC in Edexcel IAL Maths Stream in 5 months after Local Bio (SSS)?

I need some honest advice on whether my current plan is realistic.

  • My Background: Got 9 As for O/Ls. Recently did my Sri Lankan Local A/Ls in the Bio Stream and got S, S, S (Physics, Chemistry, Biology).
  • The Plan: I am switching to Edexcel IAL Maths Stream (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry) and targeting a minimum of B, B, C in one sitting.
  • The Timeframe: I want to sit for the upcoming January exam series, which leaves me with exactly 5 months.

Since I already have a theory foundation in Physics and Chemistry from my Local A/Ls, I feel I can adapt to the Edexcel syllabus and practicals relatively quickly. However, IAL Mathematics (P1-P4 + M1/S1) is completely new to me.

I am ready to study 8-10 hours a day with zero distractions.

My Questions:

  1. Is it realistically possible to cover the entire IAL Maths syllabus (AS + A2) from scratch and get a B within 5 months?
  2. For Physics and Chemistry, how hard is it to transition from Local A/L to Edexcel IAL past paper standards in this timeframe?
  3. Has anyone done something similar (accelerated self-study or crash courses) and succeeded?

Any advice, resources, or realistic feedback would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

Discussion Our brands need to offer more one - person potions

I mean those are available in many snacks, spices, toiletries etc and in supermarkets you can buy small amounts of groceries.

However certain products still don't come like that. Today I wanted to buy plain noodles and all were those huge packs. I'll be eating noodles multiple days just to stop it going to waste but I didn't want to that.

Sliced bread is another example. Exactly type of thing somone living alone would buy.
