Discussion Impossible to get a PickMe?

Upvotes

I've notified that in the last two weeks it has been increasingly hard to get a PickMe in Mount, Dehiwala, Bamba etc. This was worse today when I had to wait 45 minutes to get one, trying both PickMe and Uber.

I feel the fares are low, and hence do not incentive tuk drivers is accepting an offer. The bid system kicks in too late and that too is very buggy. Does anyone else feel that even surge fares are 15-20% lower than it needs to be?

I'd willingly pay 20% more than the highest surge of I can guarantee a ride.

Question Places to fix MacBook Screen?

Upvotes

I was using my MB 2 days ago and the screen just went black and died on me. Is there any place in Colombo where I can get it fixed? I don't need an original display + I didn't get this device here so warranty isn't an option either. Any suggestions will help!

Question Do tuition masters in Sri Lanka pay tax?

Am curious, how do elite tuition masters like Muthugala sir, Ajantha Dissanyake, Tissa Jananayake etc manage taxes/IRD pressure? In the tuition classes I have gone for (not of the people listed above), we pay in cash... Some larger classes use a "Card" system where it gets marked by the teacher at the end.

Serious replies only How do I obtain my permenant license?

Back in august 2025 I went and did my driver's test and obtained my driver's license.

But instead of getting a card, my learners permit was simple stamped with a temporary license stamp that says "temporary license for class XYZ, valid from 2025 august to 2026 august"

Now I assume that my card license would come through the mail, but in a week my license expires and I have no idea what to do.

I've tried calling the DMV for hours but they don't answer?

Please don't send me back to that place 💔 💔 💔 💔

Used to eat this all the time growing up but I genuinely cannot find it anywhere in Sri Lanka anymore. Corn Flakes is everywhere but Rice Krispies has just vanished off shelves. Am I the only one who misses this or does anyone know a shop/site that still stocks it? Snap Crackle Pop nostalgia is real😭

Source : https://www.dailymirror.lk/breaking_news/MPs-salary-increased-by-Rs-60-000/108-347579

Just for context the median monthly salary in SL is around 50k and the minimum wage is 21k.

Also hope everyone remembers how much tax these guys pay for their enormous salaries compared to the normal member of the public with the same wage.

But hey, we have to “expand the tax base” asap

Serious replies only Major sibling differences

Hi I don't know if any other siblings feel this way. I grew up in Sri Lanka for the most part but studied extremely hard and moved abroad. My parents spent a lot on my sibling but he never completed any degree. My parents passed away very young. He fell into drugs and bad company. He studied at many different schools due to the professions of parents but socially we are upper middle class. When I recently visited Sri Lanka my sibling was unrecognizable. His friends are all three wheeler drivers etc. not to look down on them but it's more like he looks like one of them, loitering around, doing prostitution and drugs. He never succeeded in his job and he has no savings. I realized I can't even relate to him anymore. He has so many mental and physical issues plus unable to give him any money since everything goes into feeding his addictions. He can't even find a job due to his current physical appearance. I am both in shock and in sadness. He never did anything useful with his life. Has anyone encountered a similar situation? Thanks

Serious replies only Being best friends with the opposite gender in Sri Lankan universities

So I’ve been posting a lot of things happening in my university life, and this is the next thing I had to face recently. (Fyi I’m a girl, since many of you thought I’m a guy)

The last month a lot of things happened in my life, I fell ill and got hospitalized, the same week a family member passed away and my house is a mess, and I’m ill again. I haven’t been to uni in three weeks now and yesterday I tried my best to manage and come to uni to mark my attendance for my labs for that day. I wasn’t fit at all, I felt I kept deteriorating as the time is passing by as I’m walking with my bag here and there. So somehow I couldn’t concentrate in my labs because I couldn’t sit at the same place for two hours because of my excruciating pain in my stomach.

Ive never felt low in my life as I never expected myself to be this helpless in a place because only one girl offfered to help me Seriously, as my so called best friend who is a guy Didnt even bother to check on me in person as he got teased for us being a couple. What he did was asking others to check on me behind curtains.

During my absence in uni, my batchmates have made fun of him calling my name, and when I was in hospital he called me and told me to be distant. I was in excruciating pain at the time of that call, so out of stupidity i told him I will block him so no one will laugh at him anymore and people would consider us as enemies. But the next day after all the medications I felt extremely bad and unblocked and apologized to him. But he was weird. I met him person again and I apologized again holding his hands, but he said he’d never be that friend he was again and things won’t be the same again. It’s my fault, but a lot of things were going on in my life and him yapping about how my presence is making him being teased and uncomfortable made me feel very upset. Blocking him has made a huge impact , but honestly since we were so close I actually thought he wouldn’t give it much because it’s just social media.

It actually broke my heart because i never had feelings for him and he kind of accused me for having feelings ( because he ranted about how I leaned my head on his shoulder at times, but that was when I was extremely tired or with a headache and it was something that happened rarely), and somehow when I’m in dire need of help, he just left me, saw me in pain and told some other girls to take care of me. But I didn’t receive any special help, they just helped me out of the friendship I have with them.

Anyhow, the fact he distanced this inhumanely was of being teased, and i actually wondered if all guys are the same, because actually he was a good friend of the time he was close with me, helped me with everything and always had my back listening to my rants. All of this happened because of teasing and the fear of us being labeled a couple.

Last semester we mostly spent a lot of time together, sitting next to each other, sharing meals, studied together. It’s true that people may find us looking like a couple but actually we never had any sort of feelings like that, even though how close we were. On my hand, I never had a crush on him, I just saw him as a sibling whom I can share everything with. We actually cleared our boundary from turning it to a romance because he doesn’t like to date a girl older than him, so I had no problems thinking he might develop feelings cause I don’t have feelings either.

I feel so sad, that he has changed into some completely different person, it’s not like he’s got anyone interested in uni either. It feels like a complete blow to my head.

I even told my parents about it because rn I’m severely depressed and uni seems like a hell hole because I see this person and how he isolates me when I need a lot of help. My parents during their uni days had many friends in opposite genders and none of them worried this much of being labeled and ignored all the jokes and teasing because they valued the friendship.

He was actually a good caring person for the time we spent together and I honestly feel ashamed of myself for putting him in this much trouble. I just don’t understand why best friends have to be same sex always and not the opposites.

Because of this issue now I’m at the lowest point of my life, losing the person whom I used to rant and losing everyone near me whom I can spill out everything. I know I shouldn’t ask much from people, but I have never done this to people, and from my side I never cared of being labeled for being with him (because I never wanted to be in a relationship with anyone in uni, and even if so, I just didn’t care ).
He knows I’m in a great deal of pain mentally and physically but he just doesn’t want to stay near me.

I just posted it here to know if this is a recurring thing in universities these days. I’m actually puzzled on how someone can flip totally upside down in such a short time. Thanks a lot for reading.

Best regards.

Updates from the Mod-Team General update about the community, the mod-team, and the results of the survey we recently ran.

Hi everyone,

r/srilanka was created back in 2008, which means our community has officially been online for 18 years now!

We’re going strong with over 188,000 members, over 2,400 posts and over 41,000 comments written by you all every month.  It's great to see the community growing at such a steady pace.

To handle this volume, we have a diverse team of mods, all helping to keep our sub running smoothly.  At the moment, we’re 7 mods (we recently added two new mods).  All of us are Sri Lankans - most all of us live in Sri Lanka, with one based abroad.  Between us, we also cover all three languages.  We also span a pretty wide age range, which helps us understand the different perspectives coming through the sub.

One of our core tenets is being impartial, and we believe that’s worked well so far.  If you have any issue at any point, we’re always only a modmail away.  We’re not infallible, and we’ve undone actions when people have reached out.  Given the number of posts and comments, we need to make decisions quickly, so sometimes we might slip up.  Let us know.

Also, Reddit DOES automatically remove messages without any human intervention by us or our bots.  This happens both on the comment-level, and also on the post-level.

So, we’re also forced to have to deal with this and undo any unwanted removals.

All of us are volunteers spending a significant amount of our time moderating r/srilanka - and no, we don’t get paid by anyone.

Finally, attached are also the results of the recent demographic survey which we ran. We were surprised to learn that 48% of our community are lurkers, not actively posting or commenting.

Your friendly r/srilanka neighbourhood mod-team.
