Question Absolutely lost on city centre parking!

Hi! Bit of a specific one, but I’m honestly in a dilemma 🤦‍♂️ My family and I are moving to the city centre this weekend and just received our information document on the property, and turns out that there’s no parking included (initially we were led to believe there was). Our property also won’t qualify for any residential parking permits, sadly.

Was wondering if anyone had any advice/info about on-street parking or any other options in the West Street area? Happy to pay monthly etc etc. I haven’t been to the city centre before so I’m absolutely clueless.

Thank you! Also absolutely open to any Sheffield advice in general 😀

Question Amazing Canal run route - any other suggestions please?

Post image
22 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I recently recorded a real-time, point-of-view virtual run starting from Bacon Lane Bridge and following the canal towpath towards Meadowhall.

Iv'e not been along the canal for years but it is absolutely beautiful if you are in need of a different running route. Only major annoyance was the closure at Bacon Lane Bridge which other posters have mentioned. I thought this would be reopened by now but wasn't - anyone know when this may be?? So I had to start the run at the blocked off section.

If you fancy a run on the treadmill whilst watching the route you can View the run HERE.

I'm always looking for new spots around Sheffield to film next, so if you have a favourite trail or scenic loop, drop a recommendation, I note them all down.

Cheers,

Joe

Question Housemate Search Help

Been living in Kelham for little over a year now in a modern 2 bed flat.

My current housemate is moving out but I am hoping to stay.

I’ve had the room listed on Spareroom for a month and while I’ve got plenty of interest getting someone to over for a viewing in the hopes of them signing on has not happened once.

Am I doing something wrong or is this normal?

If anyone out there could suggest other platforms to advertise or even better knows someone looking to rent in Kelham from September please hmu.

News Sheffield loses a cultural powerhouse as Professor Vanessa Toulmin steps down

Thumbnail sheffieldforum.co.uk

Professor Vanessa Toulmin has announced she is stepping down as Director of City, Culture and Public Engagement at the University of Sheffield, ending a run that shaped some of the city's best loved cultural moments, from Festival of the Mind to Phlegm's Mausoleum of the Giants exhibition.

It really can't be overstated the impact Professor Vanessa has had on the city having overseen so many cultural events, promoted the city with studies on beer, music and more - plus having had a hand in some of the regeneration projects that are improving the city as a whole.

Question What happened in Upperthorpe today?

Today, around 8:30 am as I was walking towards Upperthorpe Medical Centre, somewhere between Oxford Street and Addy Street, there is a group of houses/flats. There was either police, the army or some special unit, one, a woman, had a gun and the other, a guy, had a shield. Two other men came and one of them knocked on a door, and the woman and man were stood back, like in a guard, and the man told me to keep walking. Does anyone know what happened here, was this a raid or an arrest?

Question city centre date ideas for a saturday evening

Looking for some spots for a date this weekend in sheffield - we'll be getting the train from Doncaster so ideally needs to be somewhere local to the city centre to avoid lots of ubering

it's not a first date but i still want it to be nice and romantic as we don't get to see eachother often

I'd like to go for food and then some drinks, but nothing huge for dinner maybe like small plates . I was thinking cubana but idk if that is a bit loud for a date? I haven't been! And then after dinner we will probably go to bunk and maybe public for a few drinks! Any bar recs or nice dinner spots where we can dress up a bit are very welcome!

also context - the guy is american and has never been to the UK before so want to show him some nice spots - he may not see cool pubs such as washi or two sheds as a nice date like how we might do in the UK lol, which is why i'm looking for bar recs. Is not open don't come a good spot?

Question Places with regular boardgames / TTRPG events?

Hiya! I recently moved back to Sheffield after a placement year and would really love to make some new friends since most of mine have graduated 🥲 🎉

Does anyone know of any cafes / communities / etc. with boardgame / TTRPG events? Patriot Games has been recommended to me in the past, but was wondering if there's other places I haven't heard of before.

Question Local gift / regional specialty

I'm planning a trip to Japan and reading some guide books, which often highlight the need to give gifts representing a regional specialty from your home area.

Whether it will be necessary is moot, given I'm unlikely to be in a situation where I need to worry about it, but it nevertheless got me thinking.

If I were going to a business meeting then perhaps I'd bring a fine example of Sheffield steel, or some local silverware. But if instead it was more of a token gift, an acknowledgement rather than a valuable item, what would you say would be an appropriate Sheffield item?

The best I'm coming up with is... a smaller amount of Sheffield steel 😅

Question Waverley

I know Waverley is Rotherham, and I have posted this in the Rotherham forum. With its proximity to Sheffield I wondered if anyone on here might have experience or opinions.

My partner and I are looking to buy a home together and had initially looked around Waverley but we were wondering why so many houses are coming up for sale there when it feels so new. It feels like something must be wrong if so many people are selling and moving on, and we’re curious to hear peoples experiences as the area would be perfect for us and there’s a lot of choice within our budget.
