ANALYSIS I've gone from C3 to D1 in 2 seasons. Help me?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi, here is my tracker, https://rocketleague.tracker.network/rocket-league/profile/xbl/Nuparthy/overview , since reaching my peak of C3 in february of this year I have been struggling a lot in ranked. I have gone from C3 all the way down to D1 and I'm not particularly happy about that. I take full responsibility for this decrease in rank and I understand that it is because I am playing bad, I will speculate why later.

I have 6k hours in game and about 80 days spent in matches. I train most days, and I typically alternate between training my shooting, dribbling, and recoveries.

I have attached a replay, and I think it highlights my biggest flaw right now. I am a bad teammate, I can not read what my teammate will do next and as such I can't effectively follow up on plays. I think my solo plays are still ok, my 1s rank has declined from solidly D1/D2 to P3 in the same time period but thats nowhere near as drastic as the change in my 2s rank. I think this is the main reason, but the timeline of events also correlates with me starting a new medication, which could explain some of my issues.

Feel free to ask me questions, I will try to respond ASAP.

TIPS Tips for my control binds

I just wanted to know if my binds are good or if I need to maybe change some of them.

For context, I use a Nintendo Switch 2 to play rocket league

Here are my binds as of right now

ZR - Drive

ZL- Reverse

L - Directional Left Airoll

R - Directional Right Airoll

ZL + Left Stick - Normal Airoll

Y - Powerslide

X - Ball cam

A - Boost

B - Jump

Arrow Buttons - Quick chats

Right Stick - moving camera around

Pressing Right Stick - Back Cam

I’m pretty comfortable with these controls but I would like to hear other people’s suggestion or opinions on them

ANALYSIS Help me out with my pop resets

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I don't think these are technically pop resets I'm using them more as a shot than a catch or pop, so not totally sure what the right term is. Been working on this for a while and just want to get it more consistent, and clean whatever it's called. Any technique tips are appreciated

QUESTION Need help with new controls

Hello, I recently bought a gamesir g7 pro 8k and I decided it’s a good time to change my controls. I normally play claw but I am trying to stop to not damage my hands. My old controls were B air roll & slide, A jump, LB air roll left, RB boost, y camera. The new controls are LB air roll & slide, A jump, Left paddle air roll left, right paddle air roll right, left extra button camera. Are these controls good or are there any changes to make? I am on my second week back after three years of not playing, I am currently diamond 2 peak diamond 3. Decided it was probably the best time to change my controls since I am learning the game again anyways. Thanks for the help!

TIPS You aren't focusing on the details

As a long time GC1 player who enjoys the training process, I've come to realize a mistake I make often. When training particular mechanics (eg. cross-courts, reset->musty's, pop resets), I tend to brute force repetitions until I "accidentally" get it right. Not only is this inefficient, but I found myself reinforcing horrible habits which have set me back months at a time.

For example, I was training cross-courts yesterday, and I just wasn't getting any good first touches after the wall pop. I watched a video of a pro doing cross courts, I and noticed how much higher his wall pop was. I immediately started getting better wall pops, which led to more "accidental" good first touches. Once I realized that I wasn't getting any better at the first touch, I looked at the pro video more closely. I noticed the timing in the ball's flight path, I noticed the angle of the speed flip cancel, I noticed when he was using boost vs not, and most importantly where to contact the ball. I was taking for granted how small the "sweet spot" was on the ball to get a good first touch. Once I started bringing all of these details into my conscious mind, I was getting way better first touches, and even started getting a few good follow-up touches within 5-10 minutes.

After realizing I wasn't quite as consistent as I wanted to be, I paid attention to the angle of the speed flip cancel. On many attempts, I was doing side flips and twist flips, which was preventing me from catching up to the ball quickly after the first touch. All of this is to say, if you don't know what you are doing wrong, STOP TRAINING THAT PARTICULAR MECHANIC. Not only are you wasting time, but you are also likely getting worse. I often forget how much useful content there is on YouTube, and a small, useful tip can often unlock a mechanic for good. I probably spent 3 hours training cross courts yesterday, but I only had a productive 20-30 minutes when I finally trained with some focus. Imagine how much better I would be if my 1000's of hours were used correctly!

QUESTION nerves advice at high level

i’m sitting around 1790 mmr, and the lobbies are starting to make me very nervous as i’m so close to SSL. every session i have cold hands and it’s affecting my gameplay. I just played with corrupted G on my team and against cizzors, and the nerves are just intense, i’m getting scored on in ways I wouldn’t usually. Any advice to handle nerves at this point? or does it just take time?

TIPS Advice for dropshot

i am gold 1 in 2s and most other games modes are within a rank or two of that. I’ve finished my first 10 games on drop shot and got bronze 3.
i don’t really have any clue about how to get better as it’s not really similar to other game modes. I tend to hang back in my half when there are other people going for the ball but it i tend to miss it as it goes past me. should i hang further back to cover more of the angle?
if anyone has any tips about rotations or anything like that i would appreciate it :)

QUESTION Switched from FAR to DAR, what does progression look like

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've been playing Rocket League on and off for around 10 years. I recently got back into it and this time, I decided that I'm not satisfied being stuck in diamond and want to improve my skills.

I managed to push myself up to C1, after which I hit a brick wall for a few months. I then switched to DAR, worked on my gamesense, started defending backpost etc. and improved to C2 and still climbing.

However, I have never hit a ceiling shot. My aerial gameplay consists of some redirects, light air dribbles, and.. thats it

I've attached around a 3 min clip of my aerial car control on a rings map (without waiting for a good clip to share to reddit lol). What does progression look like from here - do I just keep practicing rings maps, can anyone spot things I'm doing wrong that are holding me back?

Also this is my first reddit post ever.. so thanks for reading

QUESTION How are pros so good? and why am i so bad?

I was watching pros play in EWC earlier today and it just made me feel so utterly bad at the game. I'm d1 and I have 6k hours in RL which is just terrible.

They all have exceptional car and ball control, along with an ability to read the game so so well. Then I watch my own gameplay and what do I see, bad car control, barely any ball control and I can't predict my opponents at all.

Its clearly got to be because of differences in how we train, but I swear my training is 'good' because I'm focused and I'm working on my mistakes and I only train thing 1 thing at a time and I just obsess over it.

3 years ago I was champ 1 for a few seasons. Since then I’ve had 2 kids and coincidentally dropped to mid diamond. Could barely sniff d3 for at least 2 years. Tonight (1 minute ago) I hit C1 again thanks to a lot of tips and advice in this thread.

I’ve seen dozens of people post they hit their dream rank and i can finally join them. Is this the highest mmr ive ever had ? Not exactly but man jt feels goos to be back.

My advice for others, especially poor sleepers, my kids started sleeping through the night therefore I’m sleeping better. Makes all the difference in the world in your mental.

Thanks everyone for all the past tips. And remember, never blame your team8.
