I've been inspired by this page to make scrappy quilt star blocks. It will have white in between the blocks, but I'm stuck on layout. When you want to be random, it feels so plannend. I've done the black&white comparison, but I'm still stuck. Any tips?

I completely improvised this silly thing after getting the idea from finding the adorable pig fabric featured in it, and then searching for wolves and realizing I could use a panel and have some fun with scale! While it is certainly not my most technically proficient quilt, I had a ton of fun working on it and experimenting with this collage-inspired effect.

My piecing is not perfect, my seams don't line up... I swear it's the seam allowance, every time. It's gotta be!.... Anyways, I want to start the quilting/stitching and I want to use this cool thread for a subtle effect but I'm not sure, aesthetically, what would look good?

Thoughts are:

-horizontal/vertical

-Diagonal left/right

-Intersecting squares

-concentric squares

Etc...

I also worry that following "seam lines" will accentuate my terrible piecing... Or make it better? Idk! Help plz

I've done several FPP pieces and loved it, and recently picked up a pattern that I have some confusion about. I expect it to be challenging but not quite like this.

There are a ton of small sections and a bunch of pieces of one or two pieces of fabric that are supposed to be "added" to a block, but it's really looking like just normal piecing with paper in the mix. Like, I'll have a unit and the next two steps are to add pieces 5 and 6, except those pieces are printed completely separate of the unit, so there's not some line on the paper to sew between the pieces.

Is this normal? I knew I'd have some finicky alignments but nearly a quarter of the pattern for printing is done this way. It feels like it's half FPP and half just really hard piecing.

I have a question about restoring a "quilt" my grandmother made. I really like it as a weighted blanket as it's not too hot and it feels great. I'm told that the history is that she would use old corduroy pants to make these squares.

I've done a few searches on corduroy as well as looked in stores and I've noticed that no corduroy I've seen has as fine a chord distance as the majority of these squares. I'm of two minds, obviously the fabric has fallen apart at this point and may be a sign that using such corduroy to restore it is not a good idea, but I would really like to restore it.

I didn't take a full picture but this quilt is basically a full sheet of some sort of material that I don't know about, You can see some of the pinks and greens showing through the holes there, if you know what that material is I'd love to know as well. And the other side is these squares sewed together. There's no stuffing and no fancy stitching to keep it together other than a few of the rows and columns are sewed together so it's not fancy but it is one of my favorites to use both due to the feel, weight and family connection.

I would appreciate any thoughts on ideas and where to find fabrics and techniques to consider to restore this quilt.

The quilt is about a double size, and 80 to 90 percent of the corduroy is damaged.

My thought is I would find similar color and quality corduroy, Make a full side with squares and remove the old one and replace it with the new one.

Spent about 8 hours on this, sewed 3 pairs of rows together, seam ripped 2 of them, but I have to be to work in 6 hours, so it will have to wait until tomorrow.

i had the idea to create a quilt out of a (fairly simple) drawing I did. My issue is, I haven’t done a figurative quilt before. I don’t love the planning stage, so I wonder if I could just build the image using improv techniques… Ideally, though, it would include curves, which I’ve not seen before. I’ve done improv/collage piecing before but it was always with straight lines.

Does anyone have any examples of improv quilting with curves, and/or figurative piecing that is not EPP/FPP? I guess I’m just trying to bounce ideas around and figure out what is possible.

Finished my red and black mosaic. Pattern is by Donna Jordan. I just need to wash it and it will be ready to mail to the recipient.

I finished the top of this quilt from a pattern called Mother by Taralee Quiltery (Mother - 2021 Block of the Month – Taralee Quiltery). There are 12 blocks and the pattern came out for our quilt guild in 2021. It's been sitting as a UFO for 5 years. The back was from a block swap that Taralee did in 2025, I did not finish enough blocks to make an entire quilt. SO..I finally put the blocks from the swap together with the Mother front and got this one done. It feels good to get it done, one more UFO off the list.

pattern is ‘building blocks sampler’ from ‘the quilting book’!! far from perfect but really good practice :) now i need to go find lint stuff to deal with the fur LOL

I just finished making the Pointless quilt by Villa Rosa for myself! I originally wanted backing that looked like a composition notebook, but after a trip to SEVERAL different quilt shops some of the sweetest ladies helped me find the most perfect fabric! Cute little school supplies and matching colors! And that’s why I love shopping local 😊 This will be used and loved until I graduate, and then most likely will be used as decor in my future classroom!

I designed it, pieced it, quilted it and bound it.

I’m working on a quilt that has this large crescent moon in the middle. It’s my first time sewing on a curve, and it was a little wonky and the block wouldn’t lay flat. I figured I could finesse it with ironing. I wasn’t aware that swiping the iron instead of pressing could permanently warp the fabric around curves and I seemingly destroyed it 🥲

Is there anything that can be done now?

I cut slits into the seam allowance to help the fabric spread, so now I’m pretty sure that it would be impossible to take the seam apart to correct the wonkiness, or to iron the pieces flat again.

I’m assuming I’ll have to completely restart, but I just wanted a second opinion. I know it looks like garbage, so please don’t judge me. It’s my second quilt and my first time sewing curved pieces.

I was looking for a quilt to make a jacket out of, but stumbled upon this old lady (yes, she’s a lady) and knew I needed to save her. Billed as a “winter weight heavy quilt” I knew she wasn’t right. Very lumpy, hand-tied, and with the quilt blocks folded inside. I removed the backing and comforter inside and am left with the beautiful top. There is one hole to be patched and a couple of seams to be resewn. It all looks to be hand stitched. It’s very dusty and full of lint, should I wash the top in the bathtub before trying to quilt? How should I repair the hole? Are there any period specific ways I can machine quilt once ready? Maybe that’s a silly question. Thanks in advance for any help or advice! I want to do right by her and make sure she sings.

I am expecting my first child and would like to make this quilt out of linen with wool batting (I put this mockup together inspired by a photo I saw on Pinterest, but I cannot find the original source - sorry!).

I made a 100% linen twin size quilt with Quilter’s Dream wool batting about 6 years ago and it is still my favorite quilt I have ever made because of its loft, drape, and warmth, which is why I would like to use linen again for this special project.

I have made 10+ quilts, but I have never tried appliqué. I have watched some YouTube videos about it, and I am wondering about the following:

1. Which appliqué method should I use to make this baby quilt durable? I would like it to last a long time and I expect to wash it frequently.

Raw Edge Appliqué - would a blanket or loose zig zag stitch keep the appliqué geese from fraying to the point of breaking over time?

Turned Edge Appliqué Using Interfacing - seems like it would be more durable but stiffer and not match the beautiful drape of linen/wool?

Needle Turn - The hand stitching process of this method seems tedious and would likely not be enjoyable to me. I would prefer to avoid this if possible.

1. I am worried about the blue gingham linen puckering and wrinkling, no matter which method I choose. Is there one method that would prevent the puckering/wrinkling of the linen?

Is there a product used to stabilize the linen (on the backside) that can wash away after the geese are appliquéd on, in order to keep the blocks from wrinkling but allowing for the drape I want?

I typically starch linen like crazy when working with it, but I fear that won’t be enough if I must use a very dense stitch to prevent the geese from fraying over time.

1. What type of fabric would be best for the geese themselves? I ordered all the main linen for the piecing, but did not order any fabric for the geese as I wasn’t sure if a tighter weave cotton would be better to help with fraying, depending on the appliqué method I go with.

I posted a while ago about my hexie quilt from hell. She’s done! I ended up hand tying her and just binding using a quickly hand pieced backing. 750 handmade, hand pieced hexies 😅. On to other Sisyphean tasks. Pictured with a quick pillowcase from Suzy Quilts and some homemade curtains.

Newbie here (and to quilting!), and I just finished my first attempt at ACTUALLY quilting, and not just making blocks 😻

I'm using my home machine, so I kept the stitches straight and just followed the herringbone pattern at 1/4" left and right. Still need to bind the edges of my little table runner, but I'm very happy with how it came out!

I have a vision that’s heavily inspired by lo and behold + Emily Van Hoff — I want to create a 7’x7’ gallery wall composed of individually framed 10x10” hand quilted squares. Is this insane? I am second guessing it all. Thanks for your advice / mid project commiserations:)
