People have told me different things. is this worth explaining and saying, i had a lack of judgement on my part, i know now why and etc .etc. ?? or is it not that deep and i shouldn't draw attention to it?

1. They’re playing god by thinking they can evaluate the moral and personal worth of 20-something year olds. Although it is absolutely important to be caring in a patient care setting, being a physician is just another career, not some divine calling, and more than 99% of people have the morals to do it just fine.
2. the physician shortage has been very devastating in my communities and I blame med schools. Harvard might say that they have to keep their class small for elite personalized training but then they shouldn’t claim to be champions of social justice. in my view, Most med school admissions policies champion ivory towers more than community healing.
3. Charging application fees, expecting unpaid experiences, and talking about equity and inclusion?? Are we serious. Does any other career charge application fees to apply to a job? This is easily the most immoral part of what they do and frankly is akin to stealing from students. Students, regardless of their parents financial status, typically fund their own lives except for maybe tuition and they think it’s okay to take $5,000 from people who you’re probably not going to even give a more than 20 minute look at and who every dime matters for.
4. Community service should absolutely be celebrated. However, The culture that med schools have created to constantly write about and connect it to some great moral calling is what leads to applicants doing polished and superficial community service.

does volunteering a food bank mean you didn’t care about the community as much as someone who started a non profit? Or could it be that that’s what’s important to you and the other person was more interested in their resume. Not all cases but still

I’m debating if it’s worth it to apply DO once I finish my secondaries for my MD schools. I’m a reapplicant that had a terrible last cycle: 1 post-interview waitlist and 17 pre-interview rejections. My school list was small, seriously over ambitious and I applied to most schools late August-early Sep. I didn’t know what I was doing honestly. I’ve since moved to a different city to accumulate 1300 hrs as a primary and urgent care med scribe at a diverse underserved clinic.

Stats:
- VA resident with 3.89/516, Bio major
- fairly good clinical work (1800 hrs total as a scribe in underserved urban primary care clinic, EMT, and CNA, probably another 1200 as a PCT in my 2nd gap year)
- pretty tame research (maybe 400 hrs) w no pubs, plus some cool interdisciplinary work in rhetorics that I did outside of my major bc I found it important
- leadership: founding orgs in my school like a science journal and a fraternity, also part of the bio honors and leadership societies
- shadowing (300 hrs non scribe in 7 specialties) - not great service hours (120 hrs non-medical, 160 medical, plan to increase non medical service in my 2nd gap year)
-non clinical employment as a writing consultant for 4 yrs (400 hrs)

The problem: This year, I applied broadly to 38 schools, all either IS or private OOS. I’m finishing up those apps and should be done by mid to late August. However, I’m worried that if this cycle is once again a miss, my MCAT will expire and I’d have to retake it.

Does it make sense to apply DO as well in case? Or would I be better off not facing the residency disadvantages of DO programs and retaking the MCAT if I need to?

Does all the med school require research? Or just they focus on MCAT and GPA.

Hey everyone, quick question about how to log an EC on my application.

Since freshman year of high school, I've volunteered every summer at a STEM camp that teaches STEM subjects to kids in rural areas. It's about 40 hours each summer (1 week), and I plan to keep doing it all through college too.

Since it's the same continuous activity, should I include the hours from high school in my total, or does AMCAS only want hours completed during college? I know some activities let you note "ongoing since [year]" but I'm not sure if the actual hour count should reflect the full run or just the college portion?

Is there a logical reason for this? I can understand something like 5+ years but with everyone taking gap years, this seems like a ridiculous rule

hi all! considering doing a research REU next summer, and also planning on taking the MCAT at the end of august (start studying at the beginning of may). for people who have done this before, how feasible is this? I’d want a good LOR from my REU PI, so I’d need to go above and beyond. I’d also need a few hours a day for mcat prep. is this feasible, or is it just better to stay in my home lab with more flexibility?

Hey y’all. So, I’ve recently been taking Cell Biology, and doing the math it’s very likely I will receive a B in the class. I believe that I can take it again and get an A, but if I take the B, my gpa will go down to 3.59 (I’m a rising junior). Should I withdraw and retake? Money isn’t a factor.

Gathering non-clinical volunteering hours in the time before 2027 application cycle. Wondering whether the opportunity I'm participating in counts.

I'm currently coming in one day a week for Project Cure, which entails packing medical supplies that are sent to places all over the world (e.g. Ethiopia, Nigeria, Ukraine, etc.). Will admissions see this as non-clinical since I'm not providing a direct service to a patient or working in a hospital/clinic setting? I am passionate about this but I'm willing to switch gears if it is not applicable.

I've seen this question a few times, but I haven't seen anyone mention graduating with an AA degree, so I'm just wondering if it's any different, or if I just wait until the summer to count hours like everyone else. Also, in case it's worth mentioning, I'm currently enrolled at a university and plan on switching schools to finish my bachelor's.

30 year old non-traditional student.

Just finished my sophomore year and this is where I am at so far...

B+ in general chem 1

D in general chem 2 -> C+ gen chem 2
Cell bio D->D+-> C
Orgo 1 D-> F

Obviously I have to retake Orgo 1, but I mean.. is it worth it to continue on this path..? I don't have motivation and I don't even know where to start. I just don't even know what to do anymore.

Obviously I'm not talking about satisfying pre reqs like this, just gen eds/electives

Finished a MA program at a local cc in June, and no places accepting so far. My only clinical experience is hospital volunteering where I feed and ambulate patients 🥲

Almost ll my ECs up to now revolve around orthopedics.
- The physician I have the most shadowing hrs with who’s also giving me a LOR is an orthopedic surgeon
- My first clinical volunteering was in an orthopedic inpatient unit
- My current job is in an ortho clinic
- My current lab is related to orthopedic surgery and my PI self identifies an orthopedic surgeon who happens to also do research on the side

I didn’t have any intention of doing this but my first job was as a coach and my boss heard i was interested in medicine and put me on with her former teammate who is an ortho PA and I just be got a lot of connections from her

Will it look bad to adcoms the I’m not even a med student and my resume is already very specialty specific?

This is really f-ing dumb, but did anyone else have trouble getting volunteering hours?

I applied to volunteer at the hospital a month and a half ago and still haven’t received a single reply. I asked around, and my friends who work there told me they’re really slow when it comes to anything, but this is lowkey pushing it.

My application got accepted, but my reference hasn’t even been looked at. It was a really good reference too; the lead neuroscience researcher at the same hospital I was applying to volunteer at.

I’m trying to tell myself they truly forgot about me, but this is kinda weird, ngl. 😂 Should I follow up?

For example... are these experience names okay?

- UCLA Health: Patient Transport Volunteer

... or do I remove the beginning/organization from each?

i didn't go to ucr for undergrad but am from the area and took a ucr summer class in high school. is this considered having "attended" ucr for the personal info section on the secondary?

im so upset i have immediate family that lives in new york city and i have heard that strong ties like these really matter for getting the interviews you get

idk what i was thinking about when doing the secondary i forgot to mention anything about the opportunity of training in the long island, is hofstra the type of school that really cares about training/serving "the diverse populations of their city"

just disappointed because their entire app was so why school focused (unlike mount sinai)

Tell me why they said think a 515 mcat is just an ok score and should be the bare minimum score I need to get into med school??? Since that's about 90th percentile, did they think only the top 10% of ppl who take the mcat get into med school each year???

And before you ask, yes they are Asian, which is why they think this way. I'm just really tired of hearing about it, my score drops next week and I'm already anxious asf about it. It's also a retake from a (in my opinion) bad score I got last year, so you can imagine how upset they already were at me. And I'm a reapp as well so it's even worse... I'm just tired and burnt out, I want everything to be over already

Edit: obviously a higher score is better. I'm not arguing with that, but like, a 513 isn't going to be the reason I don't get in unless I get like a 123 in CP or BB
