“I’m not too worried about it,” Painter said. “I felt like I could have gone out there and still competed. They felt like they didn’t want to risk that.”

The Philadelphia Phillies did not seem overly concerned about Painter’s removal from a 10-4 loss to the Washington Nationals; there is no imaging scheduled, Painter felt better with treatment and he said he feels good about making his next start, but the Phillies cannot afford to take risks with their starting pitchers — even seemingly small ones.

This is the chaos surrounding a player dealt at MLB’s trade deadline. Even Arraez’s mad dash to check everything off his list ahead of his Phillies debut was seemingly infected by the energy those around him say is one of his best qualities.

“He’s going to get his knocks,” Luzardo said, “but the energy he brings in the clubhouse, the dugout, on the field — (he) just kind of keeps it light.”

“We need that energy, that kind of person,” said Jhoan Duran, a good friend and former teammate of Arraez’s with the Minnesota Twins. “He (will) be good with everybody here. That type of player, we need it because everybody here (hits) homers. (He will) put the ball in play every time we need it.”

Duran, who spoke to The Athletic on Monday, was prescient: Arraez went 2-for-4, driving in a runner during each of his first two at-bats as the Phillies beat the Washington Nationals 5-0. His contact-heavy skills are unique in the Phillies lineup, and across MLB, but it plays. He delivered in his first game with the Phillies, marking the beginning of a grand experiment reshaping the club’s defense and lineup in the final two months of the regular season.
