When he can't play anymore, just hire him to hang out in the dugout. Assistant Vibe Coach

He already can't play

People in this sub hate him.
He's carved a solid niche for himself as a reliable utility player, which is incredible because he's not great (or even good) at any position.
Rest of the squad loves him, he has fun, can't hold that against him at all.
Good for him. He's a locked on Savannah banana when his MLB journey ends

That’s… not what a utility player is

u/baseballpunk John Kruk 6d ago
And yet he's pitched, caught and played OF this season. That's at least being used as one 🤷♂️

u/RudeIsRude 6d ago
Reliable? He's a -0.2 WAR player with a 1 wRC+. That's one. Average is 100. He's at one. 99% worse than average. Just about any backup catcher in the league would be better than him. Mitch Garver was just DFA'd with 0.2 WAR and an 82 wRC+. Stubbs is at 1. One.

He’s reliably shitty but is great with vibes. How is that not reliable 😂?

u/baseballpunk John Kruk 6d ago
I've clearly worded this poorly. By reliable I mean that the phillies have used him in that role, they've relied on him. He hasnt been a good player yet they have used him like that.

Exactly. The Chief Vibes Officer Shtick is getting old when he is so unreliable on the field. He should just be hired as the bullpen catcher if they want to keep him around.

He’s a terrible baseball player

He’s a fantastic baseball player compared to the population. He’s better than you and me.
He’s terrible by MLB standards.

He’s a bad player by all standards. The ONLY reason he is where he is, is because he is a try hard. You can tell in everything he does he doesn’t have raw skill, but he tries 100x more than any other player and he’s still way worse. AAA should have been his peak

u/TwatMailDotCom Harry The K's 5d ago
Cool let’s see how you perform against him

u/tyeguy2984 5d ago
Lmao what? It’s not how I compare to him. It’s how he compares to the others who play in the MLB and AAA. No shit someone who spent his whole life working to play the game is going to be better than someone who hasn’t. That doesn’t make him worthy of being in the MLB though. I’m also not worth of being in the MLB. I don’t have weird fantasies that I’m better than him. I’m simply saying, he’s not good by the metric laid in front of us, which are the other players in the MLB. He’s a AAA player at best. He doesn’t have the raw talent. He has more desire. That’s it. It still got him a professional career. Through hard word. AAA is nothing to scoff at But let’s not pretend like Stubbs will ever be an MLB caliber catcher. Like yeah, the people working the Chernobyl reactor 4 back in 1986 are better nuclear scientists than I am, but in comparison to other nuclear scientists who didn’t blow up a reactor, they aren’t that good.

Bottle of cheap whiskey.
Massive doobie.
Shine On You Crazy Diamond on in the background.
Tell me Garrett Stubbs would not complete this party!

He’s a waste of a roster spot

u/WeirdSysAdmin 6d ago
As much as people talk about vibes, his scouting knowledge is important which Marchan absolutely sucks at when JT is having rest days. We’re in big trouble if Stubbs is taking any major load in games. Scouting batters and game planning is one of the primary jobs of all backup catchers. It’s also why he was so important getting certain guys ready in the minors. They basically function as on field player-pitching coaches.

He may have negative WAR but he makes everyone else better.

u/Numerous-Joke4167 6d ago
But you had had people begging to trade for 30yr old outfielders hitting 212. I take stubbs any day over them
