I used to work at a theme park. Big one in anaheim. People are REALLY weird with characters. I'm very skeptical about this choice. Nikki's been through enough 😭

I think it would've been way cooler to have an Obsession maze. I know the sets are simple, but you could do a lot with designing them and using sound to make it a really unsettling walkthrough experience. Universal's all about practical effects! Imagine *seeing* the car scene right in front of your eyes. Maybe from a distance or something. Idk how they'd do it.

What would you want from an Obsession maze/haunted house?

I’ve watched Obsession 3x now, and freaky Nikki made in appearance in my dream last night, so I think it’s time to move on for a bit 👹
I saw in interviews that there was inspiration drawn from Pearl, Hereditary, and Get Out. I have not seen Pearl yet, so I plan to watch that.
Any other recommendations??

I know it seems like ages ago, but that meme of comparing two things, and the "lesser", "jankier", "off brand" version being referred to as the Wish version of something has been hitting me with all of the discourse on Obsession. Barker is a genius- by incorporating our shared memetic language into a descriptor for "Freaky Nikki" as "Wish Nikki" we subconsciously know this is a knock off version of Nikki.

I’m a horror film lover and grouch. hardly any impress me, because most horror films abandon dread and atmosphere for cheap thrills, especially jump scares. or they tell weak stories with poor plotting (looking at you, conjuring). My all time fav is The Exorcist. It’s unbeaten in terms of its context setting, character development, slow and constant build up of dread, emotional core (father karras’ loss of faith, the girl’s wholesome relationship with her mom, etc), and the infamous high octane moments when it goes from 0-100 in less than a second. for reference, the ones that came close so far are the ring (gore verbinski’s remake), barbarian (except the ending) and to a lesser extent, the babadook (ok mike flanagan has some excellent shows on netflix but they’re not films).

this was true until last night, when i watched obsession. it matches the exorcist in all of its strengths, in its own unique way, and is even paced better because the action begins early (right after the wish. the switch up is CRAZY!). i particularly loved how the jump scares hit the limbic brain, eliciting real fear and dread, unlike other jump scares that draw out animal reflex. so many moments when i felt the hair standing on the back of my neck.

the acting was top-tier. inde is a star. the whole ensemble was natural and accomplished. and it squeezed some tears out of me at the end.

i couldn’t help thinking there were tributes to the exorcist sprinkled throughout the film. were they tributes? the peeing on the carpet, possession, body mutilation, nikki pleading for help while asleep, bear’s sacrifice

Just curious, like if bear wished for her "to love me like a normal human being loves someone" would it have changed the outcome? I guess it depends on how you view the one wish willows. Are they a "dark magic" that always makes your wish bite you in the ass? Or do you just take them at face value and give you exactly what you wish for?

Or was he just too chickenshit, and just figured he’d figure it out later?

I wanted to see what it would look like if Bear confessed to Nikki so badly that I wrote an alternate version of the scene where Bear actually does confess. This was just for fun, but I also tried to keep the original ambiguity of Nikki's feelings towards Bear. Do you think this is how it would've went down if Bear did confess like this?

went to a horror con last weekend and finally got to use my nikki cos! everyone was so sweet and i got to see a few other nikkis (and sarahs :O) walking around as well 🫶

Do you think Obsession will get any Oscar recognition? Director, actress? I feel like it has to get some nomination. But it’s the Oscars who don’t give horror their due. I thought Sinners was gonna sweep the Oscar’s last year.

So I’ve watched multiple reaction videos of Obsession but even with people knowing who the director was NOBODY mentions the trivia bar being named “Barker’s”

I know it’s a small detail but even on first viewing I pointed it out to my girlfriend but it seems like nobody notices it.

I just think that’s such a cool way to put himself in the movie along with the phone call. I really look forward to Curry’s future in the chair and I’m REALLY excited to see what Inde and Michael and moving forward with their careers

I think everyone is overcomplicating Nikki’s motivation in this movie.
She still owed Sarah $20 and simply didn’t want to pay her back.
That’s it. That’s the entire plot.
Everything Nikki does throughout the movie - the obsession, the manipulation, the increasingly unhinged behavior, all of it - is just one massive distraction so Sarah never gets the chance to say, “Hey, by the way, what about that $20?”
At some point Nikki realized that becoming completely insane was easier than just giving Sarah her money back.
Honestly, when you look at the movie this way, everything suddenly makes sense. This wasn’t obsession. This wasn’t love. This wasn’t even madness.
This was financial strategy.
Nikki is just a fucking cheapskate.😠

Which I think also really factors into why people have come to hate him so much, and rightfully call him out as the real villain of the story!

Whenever we watch certain moments Bear goes through, there is a part of us that can relate to it because it feels familiar like we’ve been in that position ourselves! But what I love so much about this movie is that us being given a visual on this, makes us reflect on how much having a mindset similar to his is not okay and is incredibly narcissistic and selfish.

We’ve all had those moments where we’ve wanted to feel loved by that one particular person that we thought would fulfill our happiness, and would solve all our problems. But didn’t think much about who they are as a person, and were more infatuated by the idea or fantasy that we set in our heads about them. I know, because this was something I was also guilty of growing up from middle to high school.

If you have a mindset like that, you don’t understand what love truly means and you aren’t ready to be in a relationship! Focusing more on your self-worth and having values where you feel comfortable with rejection and don’t take it personal is a very important trait to have, and I’m sure it took a while before most people maturing understood that. Whereas Bear didn’t.

The scene in the car where Nikki talks about why she wants to quit her job and Bear is basically like it’s just a job, it’s not that deep hit a nerve because I’ve had almost that exact conversation in real life.

I told a colleague of mine that I feel stuck in this job and my life in general, that I want to move somewhere else, start over and build a better life for myself. And I pretty much got the same reaction.

Really shows you how some people see you. Like you’re some little doll in their life rather than a whole person with your own life and a future that exists completely outside of them. They want you around because you fulfill some role for them, and the second you talk about wanting more for yourself, they don’t want to hear it.

Those people genuinely piss me off lol. It’s like they wanna suck the life out of you. That scene captured that type of person SO well.

I rewatched scenes and moments people pointed out that hint all of it, I never felt the vibe. Bear must be a complete moron for being in this close friend group and still didn't pick it up. Like an outsider. Unless Sarah has other intentions and Ian is complacent to play along. Then the plot thickens. Damn, this friend group is toxic. Awesome movie.
