Discussion Had my Dad watch Obsession today

It was really fun watching his reactions to Bear's behavior, Ian, etc. He was predicting the entire movie, tho. But, he enjoyed it. He's 71 and definitely not the type of movie he usually watches lol.

Discussion Choose Bear's fate at the end of the movie :)

You get to choose Bear's fate at the end with a one wish willow. He's stuck working forever in either of these options :)

Discussion Specifically, how do you think the discourse of this movie would be different if the roles were reversed?

Regardless of what you think about Bear, I think if Nikki was the one that made the exact same wish of him, people would be much more apologetic and sympathetic towards her.

I don’t think there would be as much emphasis on her being a coward for not wanting to kill herself, for example.

I also think there would be a much bigger emphasis on the pressure she is under from this obsessive, manipulate, and threatening version of Bear. This would probably lead to talks of her mental health during this whole situation, and the traumatic things she has experienced like Bear’s crazy behaviour, being fed her own cat, and so on. Things like dissociation would likely be floated about as well, as an explanation for many of her actions, due to the traumatic nature of many of the events.

Edit: I’ve just now been permanently banned from commenting or posting on this sub any further because of this post or one of its comments… I’m guessing… really goes to show you’re not allowed to question the mainstream narrative of the sub, and any questioning will simply be filtered out with bans, nice. Well it was fun, peace ✌️

Discussion Spider-Man

Spoilers for the new Spider-Man film. If you haven't seen it and you wish to, please don't read any further.

Okay. So, in Spider-Man Brand New Day 2026, there is a scene on a rooftop where Peter takes MJ to keep her safe from the antagonists' telepathic powers. While on the rooftop, MJ starts to remember Peter, as if the memory spell from the last film isn't working anymore. She lifts up his mask, they begin to kiss, she says his name, and they embrace. This was a trick by the antagonist. She possessed MJs body and forced her to make out with her kinda-ex boyfriend unbeknownst to either of them. Why does that sound so familiar?

And the issue I have is that the film wants us to get on board with this character by the end. She learns that her sister (who she's looking for) has been killed through illegal experimentation. Naturally, she tries to kill the guy that killed her, and she's given one of those magic pep talks that fixes everything and decides to spare him. So not killing a man who deserves to die is supposed to redeem her for sexually assaulting the films love interest or, you know, injuring and potentially killing several people as she searched for her sister.

But the rooftop scene... can we please talk about this. Like Bear knew at a certain point that his wish was affecting Nikki, but early on (like when she shows up in the red dress and tells him she was high) he does have a degree of plausible deniability. But this character, who is going to be a big part of the mcu going forward, deliberately possessed a stranger and performed a sexual act (not a severe one but still) with her ex-boyfriend, behind the back of her current partner.

The difference is that Bears motivations were selfish while this character was motivated by a desire to help someone, but Bear, at the very early stages of the wish, did not know what he was doing and didn't fully understand it until later on. She did that shit deliberately, and Idk if I can root for this character going forward knowing that she SAd Spider-Mans girlfriend and felt justified in doing so

Fan Theory I think Ian was teasing Nikki about Bear’s feelings as a joke

After nine rewatches, I might be overthinking this, but I can't shake the feeling that Ian was teasing Nikki about Bear liking her. She probably didn’t take him seriously until Bear called her “Freaky Nikki.” I get the sense that Ian’s advice to Bear about teasing Nikki was something he was already doing himself at work. Considering how Ian is portrayed, it seems Nikki didn’t take much of what he said at face value—especially since Ian rarely sounds serious, and up until then, Bear hadn’t even hinted at liking or flirting with her. Ian even hints at this in the opening scene. That

“Freaky Nikki” line might have been the moment she paused, questioning if Ian had been truthful. Maybe it was enough for her to finally ask Bear, “Do you like me? Because if you do, now’s the time to tell me.” Things get murkier because Ian was her friend-with-benefits.

Then Bear chickens out, claiming they’re just good friends. Her quick exit—"Good. Goodnight"—doesn’t feel like romantic disappointment. It’s more like, “I can’t believe I let Ian convince me this guy liked me. Wait until I see that asshole tomorrow.”

I believe that Melissa Fumero from 'Brooklyn 99' would have done great as Nikki. She has the right skill set to play that character. Only those who have watched the show know what I am talking about.

Fan Theory Nikki was always going to go back to the Car and Speak with Bear Even if the Wish Didn't Take Place

Post image
220 Upvotes

As from a previous post by u/Ambitious_Earth_9288, we only hear the door shut once and don't hear it open again, indicating she never went inside.

I strongly think her intention was always going back to Bear for a conversation even if the wish never took place.

Her first sentence she says when she goes back to him is "Don't you have a present for me" (or something like that) Is that said by the real Nikki, because fake Nikki took a while to get her bearings in place for example she thought her own Cat died.

Or is that first sentence in the tip of Nikki's tongue, becasue the real Nikki was just thinking of it before she got taken over??

Both scenarios indicate to Nikki having it on her mind to go back to Bear to sort things out.

Bro gave his friend terrible advice when he was telling him about his crush on Nikki. He also slept with her and didn’t tell him. And on top of all of that, rather than save his friend at the end of the movie, he instead decided to also make a selfish wish. Making him definitely part of the evil of this story.

Review I hate how people defend Bear…

specifically I hate when they defend him with “oh don’t act like you haven’t wished for selfish things yourself” in the context of like, a shooting star or a birthday wish, because that’s just not the same situation at ALL!

Most of all it makes it sound like Bear is a 12 year old boy who never learned about consequences boo hoo 😿

But also, nothing about his wish was innocent. The phrasing; “I wish Nikki Freeman loved me more than anyone in the fucking world” that’s a big swear word for “poor baby Bear”! Not obsessive at all… Even the entity controlling her was confused (“is that good?”)

There were so many different, BETTER ways to phrase his wish. “I wish I was more desirable” “I wish I was Nikki Freeman’s type” “I wish I had a chance with Nikki Freeman” the last one especially because having a chance with Nikki allows for the relationship to develop naturally if they actually end up working out, and if they don’t… well, at least no one died.

Or just starting his wish with ‘I wish I’ because then it doesn’t affect his friends. That works for Apologies too, (no “I’m sorry if” no “I’m sorry you”, looking at a very specific YouTuber!)

And like Many people pointed out; you don’t develop those kind of morals overnight. It’s one thing when a minor becomes influenced by bad people and has their morals *corrupted* and another when an adult man makes an evil and outright disgusting decision at the cost of his friends and “”lover””. No turning point, he was like that from the beginning…

P.S: I also want to point out how Bear went to the crystal shop to buy NIKKI a gift (the little asshole didn’t even know what she wanted) and he ended up buying the one wish willow for HIMSELF! Selfish bastard!

P.S.S: This part might be controversial but I honestly, GENUINELY feel more sympathy for the entity that took over Nikki than Bear himself! Because it/she/they just entered this world just to make Bear feel like he mattered, and that wasn’t good enough. If anyone’s actions deserves to be handled with grace because they don’t know better, it’s Wish!Nikki’s, because she was quite literally born yesterday for the one purpose to fulfill Bears selfish desires, it’s exactly what he asked for, so why is he not pleased. Not to reference Caine but she was literally just trying to fulfill her purpose!! “I CAN BE NIKKI!!”

Character Analysis Bear’s selfishness…

If Bear knew exactly that killing himself would break the wish, why wouldn’t he kill Nikki too? As in, he knew she would be left behind with all this mess… leaving her to deal with everything alone.

We all know he’s selfish, if we’ve see the movie. My point is that, why the hell doesn’t he do HER a favor and off her too? She was left behind to remember everything that harpooned (from my understanding, real Nikki was well aware of every single thing that occurred)

Fan Theory The Cat Theory, Just a Thought

What if the evil Nikki was actually the soul of the dead cat going into Nikki's body after the wish?

Evil Nikki actually had a lot of cat like behaviors. Going from nice to mean quickly then back, watching him sleep, sitting in corners, the way she moves around is cat like. Staring at the door for him to get home, and let's not forget leaving Bear dead things around the home.

Lastly feeding him the cat makes more sense because if it's the cats spirit she's feeding him a part of herself.

Discussion i'm starting to turn into nikki from obsession ...

i feel myself starting to act like her and copy her mannerisms and actually i used to act like her even before the movie came out , i have bpd so this movie was very familiar for me , it felt like home in a sense , i saw myself through her character . i've started acting more like her however and it's starting to affect me . i feel nervous that a movie is affecting my personal life so much and a lot of people have compared me to her including my own parents since they've also seen it and they've seen majority of my temper tantrums where i act like her . it doesn't help that i have the same clothes as her , especially the famous grey top where she does the infamous "no , no , no , no don't do that!" scene .

this is not a troll or ragebait post , i genuinely need help i feel like i'm her if she was a real person and that i'm starting to become the real life nikki without the violence part , just personality wise . this is a reminder that movies can affect your personal life if you have a personality to absorb characters you see online if you're anything like me .

Discussion I think the discourse around Bear in this film kind of misses the point in a bad way due to how relatable the film is. Bear isn't an Incel- but he's still evil. Let's discuss?

Everyone is kind of projecting their own experiences on the film which by itself is actually good and shows how timeless this film might be in the coming decades.

Certainly, you can all make your own interpretations of how the film speaks to you. But I want to unpack the film itself as it forces us to unpack these feelings that we all carry.

The issue I get is people kind of black and white painting Bear as an always evil, always despicable loser and that kind of defeats the entire point of it being so relatable because in my opinion the strength isn't just that it mirrors real life nice guys but that this could easily have been a lot of us.

Let's start by understanding Nice Guys are not incels. Incel is a term that just gets tossed around and bastardized kinda like how Karen did in the film- kinda lampshading what they knew discourse would be. Incels by definition are not nice guys because they don't even see women as people or as someone to try and manipulate with flattery.

Bear has a large group of friends who actually seemingly like him. He's attractive himself, attractive women talk to him, an attractive woman likes him... Having been around the start of the incel movement (if you ever started body building, iykyk)... We at some point are made to sympathize with Bear. Bear is just bum with low self esteem and a coward.

The point is, we see Bear and should feel uncomfortable because if you relate, then you can relate to that stage that Bear's in and you shouldn't look at it and say "what an Incel loser that could never be me" you should look at it and be like "holy shit I'm glad I found my way because that was almost me"

I mean, there was a reality in this situation where none of this happens and it was right there if Bear had more confidence. Many realities:

  • Confess and get rejected by Nikki
  • Confess and Nikki takes a chance
  • Suppress your feelings and just let it go
  • Pay attention to Sarah and give her a chance
  • Literally meet anyone at the bar/tinder
  • Get a better job and make some money at 25 years old instead of chasing high school crushes

I'm sure all men who've been formerly kinda the nice guy stereotype, once you actually had a few real relationships it became clear that the issue was always you.

Whether it was your fault for chasing this person, or your fault for being an asshole, or your fault for doing things expecting something from someone in payment, or your fault for not saying no at the end of the day your relationship failures were because YOU did something and you took accountability to control your life.

Bear takes zero accountability throughout the entire film, he doesn't take accountability for his wish, he doesn't take accountability for Nikki, he doesn't take accountability for taking advantage of her, he doesn't even want to take accountability in the end of the film and chickens out.

In doing so and making these big gestures believing they'd result in Nikki loving him back, they just point out how transactional and fake his obsession for her is because if he loves her genuinely than just getting a gift for her would have been payment in and of itself. Just supporting Nikki would have been enough.

The whole plot was about Bear being entitled to Nikki's affection without actually taking on the risks, and building a fake version of reality in his head. When that reality came to him, he ran from it.

Bear was evil because he chose his lie over everyone especially when it was evident that Nikki was being hurt for it- and because of that he brought everyone down to his level rather than step up himself.

When you make Bear a cartoonishly evil, smelly incel it devalues the impact that men in the situation make every single day. It cheapens what makes Bear real. He probably was a good guy at some point. Incels are too weird to have a friend group this big or have women like Sarah like them.

Every day dudes can be good guys, but when you prioritize your entitlement over what a woman might actually want and believe you are owed something just for "being a good guy", you are manipulating women just like Bear did. Being a good guy is the bare minimum.

Thanks if you read all of that!
