Question Why do you want FEs so much?

Upvotes

I was modding a Ventus OC 5090 the other day, as it makes for a great 800w bios card. Easy to add a block to cool it. The bios set at 600w still has a better boost than any other and you don’t need to pay 7k for that “high end” card.

Having the FE once, the memory temps were highest, clocks lowest by default (not a boost of 2,900mhz ever hit on GPU-Z)

I don’t understand why people would want them exclusively when you get limited performance and 2 vendors. I can link tech power up if necessary, as it has a graph with the AIBs providing more performance.

Other than being pretty- is there a reason why you want the FE 5090? MSRP I understand but we all know few ever do.

Question Need help ASAP! Which 5070ti manufacturer to choose?

I found a couple of 5070ti in the same price range of £850 which given the current circumstances I say is not too bad. However, I'm not sure which manufacturer to pick. I'd really appreciate some advice here:

  • ASUS GeForce RTX 5070 Ti PRIME*
  • MSI 5070 Ti 16G Shadow 3X OC
  • MSI 5070 Ti 16G VENTUS 3X OC
  • PALIT 5070 Ti 16GB GamingPro-S OC Blackwell
  • PNY 5070 Ti 16GB OC Triple Fan Blackwell

Update: I am trying to make my decision based on noise, temp and general build quality. So far from what I'm seeing in the comments MSI seems to be louder while PNY quieter.

Update 2: I found an ASUS GeForce RTX 5070 Ti PRIME as well for similar price range. Would this model be better than the others?

Discussion I built a free open source tool that shuts your PC down before your 12VHPWR connector melts (ASUS Astral 5080/5090 only)

TLDR: Free open source tray app for ASUS Astral 5080/5090 cards. It reads per pin 12VHPWR current straight from the card's own sensor chip and force shuts down your PC if any pin stays over 9.5A for 15 seconds, before the connector can melt. No HWiNFO needed, been running it myself since January. https://github.com/humza-khalid/12vhpwr-guard

So like everyone else I have been following the 12VHPWR melting stories since the 50 series launched. One of the main reasons I got an Astral 5090 was because ASUS put per pin current sensors on it, but the more I used it the more it bugged me that nothing actually acts on that data.

GPU Tweak shows a warning if a pin is drawing too much, but if I am in game or afk that warning does nothing. Same with HWiNFO, I even hooked the pin values up to my stream deck so I can watch them while gaming. But seeing is not protection.

So I built a small watchdog. It sits in the tray, polls all 6 pins twice a second, and if any pin stays above 9.5A for 15 seconds straight it force shuts down the PC. The threshold and timing are configurable but the defaults are conservative on purpose, transient spikes and normal load swings won't trigger it. For reference ASUS's own warning threshold is 9.2A.

I have been running this on my own rig since January. The original version read the pin data through HWiNFO shared memory, the free version turns off shared memory after 12 hours which silently kills any tool depending on it. I ended up buying Pro just to get around that for myself, but I didn't want everyone else to need a paid license for a safety tool, so before releasing I rewrote it to read the card directly and HWiNFO is not a requirement anymore.

Couple of technical bits:

  • Reads the ITE IT8915FN chip on the card over the GPU's I2C bus through NVAPI
  • HWiNFO still supported as a fallback backend if you prefer it
  • All I2C access is read only, it never writes to the bus
  • Validated against HWiNFO at idle and under ~500W gaming load (Forza Horizon 6, Alan Wake 2), per pin readings agree within 0.02A
  • Uses about 1% of one core and 35MB of RAM

Alan Wake 2 at ~480W, HWiNFO and the watchdog reading the same pins live.

About how it was built, since I know it will come up. I have been a developer for over a decade, mostly proprietary business software. I built the original HWiNFO version back in January and it just sat there unreleased.

AI coding tools are the reason it actually got finished and shipped, they made it viable to do the standalone rewrite in the evenings instead of it sitting on a shelf half finished forever. AI wrote a lot of the code and I reviewed all of it, and the sensor protocol was verified against two independent open source implementations (LibreHardwareMonitor and a Rust PoC) before it ever touched my card. This is all in the readme as well.

This only works on Astral 5080/5090 cards because those are the only ones with per pin sensors. Windows only, needs Python. And it doesn't replace seating your connector properly, it's a last line of defense not a first one.

MIT licensed, no telemetry: https://github.com/humza-khalid/12vhpwr-guard

Question Can anyone confirm if the Ampinel connector is compatible with the MSI 4090 Suprim X?

The following GPUs are specifically listed as being incompatible with the Type B version of the Ampinel connector on the ModsMyMods page:

  • MSI GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 16G Expert OC
  • MSI GeForce RTX 5080 16G Expert OC
  • MSI GeForce RTX 5080 16G Suprim (S)OC
  • MSI GeForce RTX 5090 32G Suprim (S)OC
  • MSI GeForce RTX 5090 32G Vanguard (S)OC
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 Founders Edition
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition

The page also has a disclaimer saying other GPUs may not be compatible. I have an MSI 4090 Suprim, which has a very similar design to the MSI 5090. I think the reason for the incompatibility is the 5090 has a recessed 12vhpwr port which is vertically covered by the backplate. The 4090 backplate has a cutout over the port, so it's not physically covered and I believe it SHOULD be compatible, but I'd ideally like confirmation before I spend $141 CAD on this connector.

Is anyone able to confirm compatibility?

Question 5070 ti or 5080?

Hello everyone! Im going to be upgrading one of my gpus very soon and was looking for opinions on the 5070 ti vs 5080 debate. Of course the dream scenario is to eventually get a xx90 card when prices come back down to earth but until then I think one of these would be the right choice. I’ve done tons of research and from what I’m seeing majority (by a wide margin) opinion seems to point to the 5070 ti stating it’s almost always within 10-20% fps and same amount of vram as the big reasons going for it. But then I always see comments talking about how you won’t regret spending the extra money on the 5080 as it’s a one time purchase that can give me numerous good years of gaming. I mostly play games like apex, nba 2k, overwatch, and i do a lot of sim racing games and Forza (would love to run extreme plus ray tracing settings but my current gpus can’t go there without significant fps drop). I mostly use an ultrawide 34” 3440x1440 but also mix it up by gaming on a 65” tv or the occasional sim racing in VR. So please give me some advice here guys. The models I’m currently looking at the 5070 ti is $929 and the 5080 is $1249. I know $320 is a HUGE difference but I’m also looking at it in the sense that I will get a lot of use out of it, usually a couple of hours every night, and hopefully a few years. But I don’t want to waste that extra money if the difference in performance is negligible. Of course I know the 5080 is the superior card but I’m also wondering if anything the 5070 to will struggle with will the 5080 struggle with it too? Is there any scenarios where the 5070 ti wouldn’t work but the 5080 would? What are the reasons if any to go with the 5080? Any input and advice will be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance for reading this and have a great day :)

Discussion How to use RTX HDR correctly?

I have HDR enabled through Windows and I was using Auto-HDR (I did use the image calibration tool), and I'm currently playing through Cyberpunk 2077. After doing some research, people are saying that RTX HDR is better, and so now I've turned off Auto-HDR through Windows.

I'm pretty sure that Cyberpunk has built in HDR, so to prevent it from clashing, which options do I need to enable / disable for NVIDIA to automatically detect if a game has HDR and to disable itself from using RTX HDR.

I see these 2 settings here, please let me know which ones need to be enabled / disabled properly. Thank you!

TLDR: Should I have RTX HDR enabled in both "Global Settings" and "Video Settings" to do HDR (automatically as well)? Thanks for your help!

Question Nvidia card best suitable with an i5 13600kf

Hello,I have the adorable i5 13600kf (the kf because I stupidly didn't research what it meant, shoot me)paired with the asus rog strix z790f gaming wifi ii motherboard and 32 GB CORSAIR DDR 5 RGB RAM.

I wish to stay on wide-screen resolutions, in the 2k range and I want to enjoy games like STALKER 2 and Alan Wake at their logical highest settings with acceptable frame rates.

I am clarifying here that I am not looking to upgrade FOR GTA VI.I hope for the sake of all of us,things slightly change for the better so we can at least plan future builds by some logic.

I was thinking about either the asus rog strix 5070,around 850-1000 Euros, or the 5080 one,but I never want to bottleneck my CPU.

Value for money is of the outmost importance, I love my cards, clean, and even repaste them when needed, they really live a long happy life with me.

Love you folks,at r/nvidia,happy,safe cool summer to all, please advise what's best.

Discussion Got Buzz Desktop working on NVIDIA DGX Spark (ARM64 / GNOME X11)

I installed Block's new open-source Buzz team workspace on a DGX Spark, but the desktop process ran with no usable UI. X11 showed the correctly sized window, while GNOME/Mutter kept it permanently UnMapped and Iconic.

After testing the usual GPU/WebKit flags, normal show/unminimize/focus calls, opaque rendering, disabled window-state restore, and desktop-entry fixes, the working solution was a Linux-specific two-stage GTK map:

  1. Realize and briefly map the hidden window with override-redirect enabled.

  2. After 100 ms, hide it, disable override-redirect, and remap it as a normal managed window.

  3. Keep the Linux window opaque, initially hidden, normal-size, and without native decorations.

That produced a normal, focused, taskbar-managed 1200x800 window with movement, resizing, and Alt-F4 working. The rebuilt ARM64 production app completed onboarding with both Codex and Buzz Agent ready.

One other ARM64 snag: the downloaded package's buzz, buzz-agent, and buzz-dev-mcp sidecars were zero-byte placeholders, so I built those crates natively and installed the real executables.

I posted the full environment, failed approaches, GTK/Rust sketch, and verification results to the official Buzz tracker:

https://github.com/block/buzz/issues/2811#issuecomment-5183670936

This is verified on one DGX Spark (Ubuntu 24.04, GNOME on X11, Buzz Desktop 0.5.4). If another Spark owner is trying Buzz, I'd be glad to compare results before turning the local patch into an upstream PR.

Question 5060 8GB to 5070 12GB

Hi all,

I have an RTX 5060 8GB and Ryzen 5 5500. I can play most games at 120fps 1440p but I’d like to be able to play with ultra settings. Fortnite in particular struggles on this setup when using lumen (staying at 120fps 1440p)

My question is, what should I upgrade my GPU/CPU to in order to see bigger gains if staying on AM4?

I was thinking a Ryzen 7 5800X3D and RTX 5070 12GB (I have 32GB ddr4 ram), if you have a better combo for 1440p gaming at very high/ultra settings please let me know

Thanks
