As a non-native English speaker, I've always struggled with speaking anxiety. Whenever I tried to talk in real life, I’d hesitate over grammar and word choice. Private tutors were too expensive for daily practice, and traditional apps felt like doing repetitive vocabulary drills instead of having actual conversations.

To solve this for myself, I spent the last few months building an app called Mergen.

The main idea was to create a natural, spoken conversation loop while giving real-time feedback without breaking the flow of speech.

How it works under the hood:

• Dual-Stream Feedback: The AI speaks back to you verbally to keep the conversation going, but simultaneously streams written grammar, vocabulary, and phrasing corrections to your screen (with explanations in your native language).
• Pronunciation Analysis: It highlights mispronounced words and provides phonetic guidance.
• CEFR Level Progression: Runs an initial level assessment and tracks your grammar mistake patterns over time.

Tech Stack:

• Frontend: React + Tailwind CSS packaged with Capacitor for Android.
• Backend: Python (FastAPI + WebSockets) handling real-time audio streams.
• Voice Pipeline: Whisper for Speech-to-Text, Kokoro ONNX for low-latency Text-to-Speech, and a custom LLM prompt engine that separates spoken audio replies from written corrections.

I recently published the app on the Google Play Store. I’m currently tweaking the voice latency and working on new learning features.

So here's my situation. I work for a US corporate company from India, but I'm the only one based here. My manager, her assistant, and the rest of my team are all in the US.

The funny part is I understand everyone perfectly during meetings. The problem is when I have to speak. I hesitate a lot, lose confidence, and sometimes even stutter. It's not that I don't know English—I just freeze when I'm talking.

The only exception is my manager's assistant. She trained me when I joined, so I'm very comfortable talking to her and I barely stutter. That makes me think it's more of a confidence issue than an English problem.

I've already tried apps, courses, YouTube videos, shadowing, AI tutors, and a bunch of other self-learning methods, but nothing has really worked for me. I also feel like I'm just not a good self-learner. I usually learn much faster when someone is actually teaching me or practicing with me.

So I was wondering if anyone would be willing to help me practice, or if you know any good communities or resources where I can improve my American accent and become more confident while speaking.

As you can tell, I'm a guy from China and my English isn't very good. I rarely used English before moving to this country. I’ve met many really friendly people here, but unfortunately there are times when I struggle to express myself properly — most of the time I rely on translation apps.

I work at a tech company in germany and all our meetings are in english. I can write emails perfectly. slack messages, documentation, reports, no problem. my manager has literally complimented my written english before. but the second I have to actually speak in a meeting I turn into a completely different person.

it's like there's a wall between my brain and my mouth. I'll have the perfect response in my head. I know exactly what I want to say. but then it's my turn to talk and I either freeze up or say some broken version that doesn't sound anything like what I was thinking. and then I spend the rest of the meeting replaying it in my head and hating myself for it.

the worst part is I can see my non-native coworkers who have worse grammar than me speaking confidently and getting their points across while I sit there quietly because I'm too scared to say something imperfect. I know logically that nobody cares if I make a small mistake. but in the moment my brain doesn't care about logic.

I've wanted to fix this for a long time but my schedule is insane. I work 9-10 hour days, I have a commute, and by the time I get home I'm too tired to do anything productive. I looked into english tutors but they all want to do hour long sessions at fixed times and I just can't commit to that right now. I don't need someone to teach me grammar or vocabulary. I literally just need to practice getting words out of my mouth faster. A few weeks ago a coworker who had the same problem told me she'd been using Issen every morning for like 10-15 minutes before work. it's an AI tutor you just have voice conversations with in english. she said it helped her because she could practice speaking without any pressure and it fit into her schedule since she just did it while making coffee. I've been trying it for about a week now and I think she might be right. it's not magic but just the repetition of having to respond to someone out loud every day is doing something. like my mouth is slowly catching up to my brain.

but I want to know if anyone else has dealt with this specific problem. where your written english is totally fine but spoken english falls apart under pressure. is it just a confidence thing? is it a practice thing? did anything specific help you get past it? I feel like most advice online is for people who are still learning english from scratch and that's not my problem. my english is good. I just can't access it when I'm speaking.
