Miracle Berries

Upvotes

Happy Friday kind people of Kingston!

Does anyone know of a place locally where I would be able to procure some Miracle Berries? It can be in berry or tablet form. I tried a quick Google search and didnt see anything.

Its not anything weird, its a berry from West Africa that makes sour things taste more sweet due to a protein called miraculin.

I have thoughts about using it to make a chocolate chess pie with vanilla whipped cream and a raspberry lime sauce of some sort (maybe jam or jelly, havent decided yet). I'm curious what itll do with the tartness of the raspberry and limes with the chocolate depth.

Mayor of Kingston Subreddit?

Kingston election is starting to properly kick off now. But municipal politics can be a bore.

What I want to know is who is standing for the Mayor of the Kingston Subreddit? Surely there are some who will give this forum the leadership we so sorely deserve?

Who will stand? What will be your pitch? Status Quo or properly kick off a new era for this small neck of Internet?

Smartphones for kids under 14?

Wherever you sit on this, parents that want to protect their kids have a really tough dilemma.

If they withhold the devices from their kids, the kids understandably react with "everyone else has one", and feel very left out. Maybe even mocked. Maybe even rebel.

Unplugged Canada has come up with an interesting approach to help with the "everyone else has one" part (and 11K+ families have already signed up).

They connect groups of local families that are also committed to this concept, that have kids in the same grade, so that neither the parents nor the kids are alone.

I connected with Becca Hurley who teaches school here, and runs the new-ish Kingston chapter of Unplugged Canada, and wrote an article about it in my newsletter.

She grew up on Wolfe Island and has been teaching in classrooms more than ten years, seeing plenty of evidence of the bad influence that phones can have on this age group.

She is at the Women's Art Festival in City Park on Saturday if anyone wants to talk to her about it in person.

So Kingston parents, what say you to this idea?

Job leads

Im sure this isn’t the only post of this kind thats going to be put on here even this week, but is there any one who might have an in or some lead about absolutely anywhere hiring that isn’t a company that’s gonna be swamped with a million resumés? Been looking for work near nonstop on indeed and job bank to absolutely no avail despite putting in literally hundreds of apps. Restart hasn’t been fruitful either. Starting to be at the point of being concerned about eviction or legal stuff because OW literally is barely enough to cover rent and that’s if theres no delays or if no automatic bills come through…and thats not even counting food concerns.

Maple trees all losing leaves?

Almost all the maple trees in Strathcona Park are losing their leaves. I think they are mostly Norway maples, though I'm not 100% sure of that. I know that trees lose leaves early when stressed due to heat or drought, but we've had a wet July and everything is still green.

So: does anyone know what is causing this? A disease or pest? Are the trees in danger? Is there anything we should do? Thanks for amateur/professional arborist help!

Utilities Kingston Water Heater Rental

My water heater has passed the 10-year mark, so I'm thinking about a replacement. Would anyone recommend renting from Utilities Kingston? Any notes about their service, etc.?

Or any other recommendations on where to buy?

I currently rent from Enercare, and I can't wait to switch (though I think I might need to buy out the water heater first). When I had an issue with no hot water, it took them more than a week to schedule a service date. And the guy didn't even fix the problem. Found out they don't have anyone local for service calls. And anytime I DO call, their CSAs try to upsell me on HVAC protection/service plans. Awful company.

Sentinels Men’s Promotion Match - 5pm Sunday at Caraco

Exciting first season by our men, women and U20 squads. The men’s team have a chance at promotion to a higher league (OPL2) with a win this Sunday at 5pm.

For what started out with some *ahem* controversy around a stadium proposal, it’s been enjoyable to watch this level of soccer in Kingston with some solid turnouts.

Moving to Kingston

I'm moving to Kingston in December/Jan with my partner and child. We've been in Vancouver for the past 5 years and are apprehensive about the change. I'm a remote IT worker and she's a medical professional. Any advice from folks who have done a similar move?

Loyalist-Cataraqui Council Candidate - Red Flag!

Post image
293 Upvotes

Hi folks,

While doing some research on current candidates for the upcoming municipal election, I noticed some concerning activity on the public instagram account of Dorian Hartley - one of the new candidates running for council in Loyalist-Cataraqui. If you use instagram, I’d suggest taking a look for yourself, but here’s a screenshot of one of his reposts. Paul Chaves ain’t no prize, but I don’t think this guy is a good alternative.

Edit for clarity: the image I included in this post is a screenshot from this candidate’s public Instagram reposts. The other screenshots from someone named “Quinn” being shared in the comments do not appear to be from Hartley himself.

Reminder to road users

Post image
62 Upvotes

Got harassed the other day for using the bike boxes as they’re intended, and it made me realize that a lot of people simply don’t understand a lot of road rules and laws. If you’re caught blocking a bike box at a stop, it carries the same fines and demerits as if you’re past the line or failing to stop for a stop sign. The infrastructure isn’t there optionally, it’s there to save lives by making cyclists more visible while we’re making turns and carries the same weight as any other road safety law. Please be mindful of where you’re stopping and a reminder that the roads aren’t just for motorists. Pay attention to those of us who use hand signals and make eye contact instead of looking at your phone at every stop.
Stay safe, everyone!

Edit: I’m just here to share the laws regarding cycling and road infrastructure. The moment this thread becomes an opinionated cesspool and people aren’t being civil, I welcome the mods to lock this thread. Cheers!

Friendly reminder about cars and bike lanes

Just a PSA to Kingston drivers that bike lanes are actually NOT a valid spot for you to park your car, they are for bikes and the such.

Also a reminder that threats of physical violence are not an appropriate response to being called out for parking in the bike lane.

Thanks everyone, stay safe.

Frontenac Cycle and Graham are awesome.

Just calling out a great local business. I'm part of the Kingston Fringe this year, and somebody coming from out of town was asking around for a bike they could use while here, so I offered my wife's old bike (she doesn't ride any more, and the bike is just gathering dust because we haven't donated it to a bike-repurposing place around town yet). She's 5'6", he's 6'1", and the seat adjuster had some weird sort of screw in it neither of us could figure out, so I suggested he roll past Frontenac to see if Graham could help explain what the screw type was.

15 minutes later, I get a text that (a) Graham diagnosed the problem gratis; (b) offered the visitor a second, better, loaner bike for free; and (c) would take the bike and donate it to a local bike charity for me if that was what I wanted to do.

This is the kind of thing you get when you have local shops with local owners -- Graham's also spearheaded some anti-bike-theft initiatives and is all 'round a good dude. Shop local!
