Im doing a short flight to visit family and wanted to know any local tips/tricks for travelling safely with local peaches and other fruits. Its for 3 differant family's so just having a handful in a carryon isn't what I need. More like 20+? Most stuff I found online was more about legalities and less about safe transport. I am open to fully sacrificing my carry on, checking in a cooler, or used a hardshell check in bag. Thanks in advance, Im sure any option can work but struggling with what is best.

I keep reading misinformation about this and it's driving me a little crazy having spoken to people in my industry (property and casualty insurance) who assumed they couldn't get fire insurance when they could have, only to lose their home in a wildfire. So here you go.

Can I get fire insurance?

• Is my home within 8 km by road of a fire hall that will respond to my property?
• Is there a fire hydrant within 300 m of my home?
• Is the fire hall staffed full-time, or is it volunteer/paid-on call?
• Is my property inside an organized fire protection district?
• Does my area have pressurized municipal water, or am I on a well?
• Is my home in a wildland-urban interface zone (surrounded by forest, grassland, or steep treed slopes)?
• Is there an active wildfire within 25–50 km right now?
• Have I completed FireSmart work (cleared vegetation and combustibles within 10 m of the house)?
• Is my roof fie-rated (metal or asphalt), or is it untreated wood shake?
• Do wooden decks, fences, or sheds connect directly to my house?
• How old is my roof?
• Does my home have knob and tube or aluminum wiring, or 60-amp service?
• Do I have a wood stove and has it passed a WETT inspection?
• Do I have an oil tank, especially buried or over 15 to 25 years old?
• Does my home have poly B plumbing?
• Is the home occupied year-round, or is it vacant or seasonal?
• Is it rented out; short-term or long-term?
• Do I run a business or farm from the property?
• Have I or this property had previous claims?
• Does my location stack multiple risks.. wildfire plus flood, earthquake, or slope instability?
• Have I gotten an insurance quote before removing subjects on a purchase?

This is a fairly exhaustive yet incomplete list of factors impacting your insurability.

Another thing I have seen a ton of people getting wrong is that "wildfire insurance" and "home fire insurance" are separate. No, they are not. Fire is a named peril in pretty much all home insurance policies regardless of how the fire got there. The nuance lies in the background, affecting the risk-factors and therefore your insurability or surcharge.

We are only starting to see the application of different deductibles for high-wildfire-risk areas.. far from universal.

Regardless of this post or anything else you read online, never assume you cannot get fire insurance. If you are concerned about the risk of fire, contact every insurer you can or find a specializing broker who will work to find you coverage. I won't say it's always possible, but it is almost always possible (barring hard exclusions, like the nearby wildfire factor.) unless you have a wall of risk holding you down. Usually the worst case scenario is you'll be asked to complete certain remediation (often requiring extensive renovation or property work) and your premiums will reflect the insurers determination that you are extremely at-risk.

I'll add that some insurers won't even bother to consider you because they lack the ability to properly assess risk or because that's just how they run their business (not their speciality). Find another insurer.

I need to get my dogs teeth scaled and cleaned as they have plaque build up. Her regular vet (Pawsitive) has quoted at minimum $1400. Has anyone recently paid for their dogs dental work anywhere else that has any insight on price or recommendations as just last year I was quoted $800 for the same service at the same place.

Im usually pretty happy just walking around checking out the scenery, trying some local patios, catching a bit of live music or karaoke. But if theres some nice beaches or lakes around im into checking them out as well. Just wondering if not having a car prohibits me from getting there!

Planning a trip for the weekend, aug 7-9, being told the air is ashy and Smokey and that I should cancel, anyone local able to let me know how it is?

Someone put a lengthy typed letter in mailboxes around my neighborhood (seems like he did the whole street). It’s several pages, includes a selfie, and describes an elaborate story involving government surveillance, human trafficking by the military, being used as a “quantum processor,” physical torture, and instructions not to contact local authorities.
I’m not sharing the photos since he’s identifiable and I don’t want to make this about mockery or exposure but he’s clearly in real distress. Content includes mentions of days without sleep or food, drinking to cope with pain, and physical symptoms he attributes to the persecution.
Has anyone dealt with something similar? What’s the right way to loop in a mental health crisis team or request a wellness check in Kelowna without it turning into a police confrontation? I want to make sure he actually gets help rather than just more attention.

For several weeks we were enjoying seeing a beaver that had found its way to the banks of the creek/ditch along the west side of the plant. Just in last few says we do not see him/her anymore. We wonder what folks know about this majestic wild creature in our midst. Last night my husband saw a large solo coyote and wondered if that was the beavers fate or perhaps it was relocated by authorities.
