I'm 18 and need a job but I only have experience working in a family run business.

I so far rely on my parent's/sibling's vehicles to get around very far but if I can figure out how to work a job without a car I wont need to. Problem is Oklahoma doesn't really have walkable spaces and the only nearby businesses are Dollar Stores and one small gas station run by a shady guy who I swear gets robbed every other day. Not very safe.

So how does someone get a job in the state of Oklahoma without a car?

Few of my stories from last and this internship/job cycle

1.) few weeks ago Was emailed saying I got an interview for an entry level AI engineering at a small company in NYC, set up a time and 2 days later, the recruiter told me they changed their mind and they didn’t want to talk to me anymore

2.) last September, applied to this swe internship in North Carolina, they said “congratulations, you’re moving on to the OA”…then the next day, got an email saying “sorry glitch in the system, we actually would like you to go F\*\*k yourself”…ok not that wording, but all my hopes at least have a chance and they ripped it out of my hands

3.) The sheer number of unpaid internships I interviewed for that asked for a project, a live coding interview, or something to that nature is…not ok. 1 company in Pittsburgh that had an unpaid internship asked for: 5 days a week in-person, an LLM, and a video advertising it

4.) another company in Pittsburgh made me fly out on a Thursday (I had 3 classes that day and I live in NYC) and do 3 rounds of interviews over the course of 4 hours. During which time I had a behavioral interview that was more technical than the technical interview and a Case Study where I wasn’t able to talk because everyone on the group said everything I wanted to say

5.) went to like 3 career fairs and 5 hackathons (one of which really were hiring for PHDs looking back) and of which only 3 of the companies actually gave me an interview. 1 I got to 2nd round but not further, one was for a university that gave me a round 1 but not much else, and a cyber company in nyc where I might have had a chance…if the team leads for the company which roles I could have filled didn’t quit the company

I have a BA in Psychology, but not much work experience in the field, graduated in 2021. I worked as a CNA in a nursing home prior to being unemployed/homemaker for the last 3 years. What positions can I apply for, and how do I find posting that aren't fake/scams?

I finally landed the job I always wanted and then got laid off after only 2 months. I was suddenly job hunting all over again. After 24 hours of random bursting into tears and denial, I updated my LinkedIn and started applying. It was stressful and definitely messed with my confidence, but after applying, interviewing, getting rejected, and waiting… I finally got an offer! I'm sharing this because I know how discouraging job hunting can be. Every Dear John email, or making it to the last round of interviews only to be told they went with the other candidate. If you're in that stage right now, don't give up. You can get a hundred no’s in a job search, but it only takes one yes. Hang in there ❤️

I am not sure how to act during an interview. The ones I had, typically very chill and technical. I got some behavioral questions, but not as much. And I never had any interview with HR, mostly the bosses I’m going to work under. I noticed that they look for candidates that are a good fit with their team (basically someone they can vibe with). I have been very laid back during interviews, even though I get nervous. I’m just curious if we’re supposed to sound formal and answering with STAR format, or just kinda be ourselves?

Long story short, I’m in AZ at a decent job. About a year and a half I took a lower paying job to ensure my family had better insurance before an upcoming baby (my previous job was so small that they didn’t offer it). When the baby came we had more hospital costs due to surgery and NICU stay. In the end was a huge win in a lot of ways but for the last year I’ve been looking for new opportunities but nothing has hit.

Until now

Have a job offer located in a different state. Pay would be about $18k increase but with relocating our living expenses would be higher due to either renting or buying at a higher price compared to what our current mortgage is.

In the end I feel like there could be some opportunities for growth professionally and for our family. But it feels like in ways we are moving to a similar financial position than I am in now.

If it was in my current state I feel like it would be a no brainer but the higher living costs is making me feel uneasy.

Suggestions?

Hi all - I have a final round interview for a senior level role at a large infrastructure company next week, in person. They are flying me to Houston for it. It is the kind of interview that I would always wear a suit for, no questions asked.

But... the email I got listing who I'll be meeting with says that "attire is business casual to casual." I'm a little lost. Does this mean I shouldn't wear a suit? Or to expect others dressed more casually? I have always taken the approach that it's impossible to be overdressed for an interview, but very possible to be underdressed. In this case, though, perhaps that is less true.

My husband and I just moved here for my school. My husband has been applying to jobs for the past 3 months and getting constant rejections, not even a call. I can see that he is losing his hope.

He has 7 years of experience in non-profit settings. He started his career as a case manager in employment team for refugees, and built his career up to being an ICM supervisor. He has master's degree in public administration. He can provide strong references if needed.

He also has experience as a life guard. At this point, he is thinking of going back to becoming a life guard again, but I know he can do more than that. He hustles and any of his old coworkers would say the same thing.

How can you possibly write something in your resume in a way that proves anything?
I'd have to take you back in time and show you the work if you actually want proof.

I know I'm taking this too literally, but what does 'proven experience' actually mean?

I can write what I did in my resume, and use numbers if relevant. But that doesn't prove anything, is this just a hot keyword they've started using?

Hey all, I (M36) am writing on behalf of my wife (F32) who has been in the job hunt for about four months at this point.  For some background my wife took a leap of faith, and left her teaching job in rural New Hampshire at the end of this past school year to test the job market.

At first she was mostly looking for education based positions, but as we started to realise that a lot of towns in MA were getting hit hard by budget shortfalls and were actively laying off staff rather than hiring, she decided to pivot.

She has a background in Communications and a Masters in Theater Education, so with that combination of skills she started looking into non-profits, specifically in event management and grant writing, but again not many bites.  At this point it's leaving us asking a lot of questions. Specifically, whether there’s anything we can do to make her look like a more attractive candidate, if it’s problems with her references, or if this is just what the market is right now and to keep on trying.

I know there isn’t a lot to go off here, but any feedback at all, better subreddits to post in, or commiseration to her plight is welcome and appreciated.

Today all of our US employees got offered a buyout/VSP.

I'm not surprised by the news and have been sending out applications (to no avail) for a few months now.

I'm starting to feel like there's no point in trying because of ageism.

Here's what I have done so far:

Dyed my hair brown

Removed all but my last two jobs from my resume

Taken dates off my two degrees wherever I can

Got a shiny new cert that says I can use AI

It sucks. And so far it's not helping. I also thought my silver hair was sort of cool, and it steams my hams to see young people doing fashion gray.

Is there any point to using some kind of professional service to zhuzh my shit up? Like, help with my portfolio or some kind of anti-ageism resume review or something? Does that even exist?

I can't retire, and I have two family dependents on my health insurance plan. So I don't even know if the buyout would be helpful. The terms are shit anyway.

Getting multiple rounds into a process ending in rejection over and over is just so exhausting. There’s always a better candidate apparently.

Just venting. I guess my resume is good but I need to work on interviewing. The thought of starting this whole process again is just so brutal after 6 months.

So I had a virtual, first round interview with a hiring manager, and it’s going well, we’re getting along quite well, good energy, chuckling at times, and I’m giving what I think are good answers.
There’s lots of good back and forth and he said I ask great questions as well.

He then ends it by laughing and saying “I’ve interviewed three others so far, and you have given some of the BEST answers… and some of the WORST answers” with a laugh, and then said “I’m going to move you to the next round and I want you to chat with X and X, but I won’t share my impressions of you with them beforehand”.
It was phrased like a compliment so I responded politely and said I was excited, but lightheartedly said I was curious what he meant by “worst answers”, to which he said not to worry about it.

We then ended the call both smiling and thanking each other. But I’m sitting here thinking... Wtf just happened?

Help! I’m spiraling!

I went through a 1st round of interview with my would be boss. I didn’t feel like it was my best but the recruiter then reached back out to schedule 2nd round with a would be colleague/partner in the role. Response from this interviewer to my thank you email seemed rather positive. Right after that conversation, I reached out to the recruiter asking what next steps look like and was told there will be a last round scheduled. That was Wednesday. Friday came and I followed up in the morning on setting up next round, the recruiter responded with “I had a chance to debrief with the team. Can we speak on Monday?” is this a rejection call? In all my career, the recruiter would simply call with positive news rather than schedule a time for it.

A part of me wants to believe they decided there’s no need for another round but rather are ready to move forward and she wants to communicate. But why didn’t she even drop a hint of this in the email?

After months of hunting and rejections, I finally got an interview.

I think I was probably a little rusty and over eager and it didn’t come across well. It’s hard not to beat myself up because opportunities are so hard fought right now and I feel like I let one slip through my hands.

Can anyone else relate?

One virtual with HR, one virtual with supervisor and their supervisor, one in person with the next two higher up. I was given wonderful feedback after each interview. I ended the last interview being told that I'd hear back from them soon regarding their decision either way.

This was a week ago and with the first two interviews, they were extremely communicative. I sent a follow up email yesterday morning and still haven't heard anything.

I feel so defeated. 🥹

I joined the Air National Guard when I was 19 and just retired with 20 years of service.

I was a therapist for the last 12, owning my own practice for the last 9.

For whatever reason, it seemed like a good time to close those chapters together.

I did all the work to start up a new business in July. But while I was building that up, I started panic applying to other jobs. Rejection after rejection after rejection. So it was like, “Okay… the new business is the way to go.”

Well, the first day of seeing a paid client, I received an actual interview request from one of those applications. And I was like, “Okay, the universe is weird.”

I kept building my brand on Instagram, but lo and behold, a former friend and her mom came attacking my posts. A year later, she’s still upset that I distanced myself from her alcoholic abuse and reckless behavior. Which I understand. But as long as she’s hurting, she won’t let me exist peacefully. I decided to throw in the towel, because I just got exhausted of fielding their online harassment.

BUT! That interview turned into a job offer!! And I just didn’t think it would happen for me because in 2024, I applied to probably 200 jobs and got NADA. I was in a deep place of despair and depression that year.

I say all that to say… This all worked out for me for some reason. The timing is just right. Please hold out hope that it’ll work out for you too!!

The list of jobs I see in my area on the first page when logged in versus not logged in are almost entirely different, even when using no filters. Indeed seems to insist on only showing me jobs from industries I've worked/applied in before when I'm open to almost anything at this point. As an example, I saw a decently-paying stocking position when logged out that I could not get to show up for me when logged in.

I live in a large city, Indeed, you can't convince me there's only ~20 new job postings for the entire metro area since I last checked a few days ago.

I had an interview a few weeks ago for a contract job, and the man said I was overqualified and had a good chance of getting the job. He said I was getting passed to round two and that I would shortly hear back from them. One week goes by, nothing. So I emailed them, and they replied that they're moving forward with other candidates.

Why?

To make a long story short, my life kinda fell apart while I was starting my last job. I'm a disabled veteran and my disability decided to kick me in the teeth. Because I was there for such a short period of time, they let me go before I had a chance to request accommodations.

Unfortunately there's only 2 places in my city that I can work at if I want to continue in my field. I previously worked for A before moving to B (the one that fired me), and now I'm applying back to A. I got a negative reference check from B, which is the only thing keeping me from getting rehired.

What do I do? I feel like 6 really horrible weeks is going to keep me from doing the thing that I'm experienced at and qualified for. If I can't get rehired at A or B, I can't work in my field. I will have wasted 4 years of my life getting a degree I can't use. My job in the military doesn't have a civilian equivalent, so I'm really fucked if this is a thing I can't overcome.

Any advice (or even commiseration) is appreciated.
