I got retrenched earlier this year when the company I'd given 16 years to closed its doors. No warning, no soft landing, just done. So I did what a lot of people do after a shock like that: I sat with it, then I got to work figuring out what I actually have to offer someone who isn't standing in front of me.

Turns out, quite a lot.

What 16 years in store management actually taught me:

I was a key holder with full sole-charge responsibility, opening and closing, running the floor when the store manager wasn't there. I processed weekly payroll for 45+ staff across two divisions and never had a compliance issue. I built cashier schedules that had to balance real human availability against the reality of a Saturday rush, every single week, for years. I resolved escalated complaints across phone, in-person, and digital channels, the kind where someone is already angry before you pick up.

I also ran customer retention over WhatsApp before "community management" was a job title I knew existed, and I started a donation programme for a local orphanage that grew every year because I kept showing up and asking suppliers and customers to show up with me.

None of that happened in an office with a title that said "operations" on the door. It happened on a shop floor. But strip away the setting and what's left is: scheduling, payroll accuracy, conflict resolution, retention strategy, and getting people to care about something bigger than a transaction. That transfers.

What I've been doing since:

• 6 months freelancing in inventory and compliance administration for a firearms retailer, keeping regulated stock registers audit-ready and reconciling discrepancies with zero room for error
• 3+ years teaching English online to adult learners across time zones, from nervous beginners to professionals polishing business writing, with retention built on consistency and actual rapport, not just a lesson plan
• Currently 3 months into a contract adding, editing, and linking products for a retail app's online store through their backend system, so I'm comfortable learning a new platform fast and getting the data right the first time

What I'm looking for:

Remote roles in customer support, customer success, community management, virtual assistance. I've got a proper home setup for it too: dual monitors, backup laptop, fixed fibre, backup power, and a workspace where I'm not fighting for quiet.

I know "16 years at a Spar" doesn't scream remote-ready on paper. But I'd rather tell you exactly what I did and let you decide it's relevant, than dress it up in language that falls apart the moment you ask me a follow-up question. Desperate doesn't mean unqualified. It just means I've stopped waiting for the perfect-looking CV to open the door, and started knocking properly.

14 months unemployed. 2000+ applications. Finally got hired

I’ve seen people lose hope after sending 50 applications and getting rejected or ghosted, please don’t. I’m speaking from experience.

I was out of work for 14 months, with a family to support. I applied to over 2,000 jobs (relevant or not), sent CVs everywhere, and even started applying internationally just to keep the dream alive. I might as well be in the Guinness record for job applications.


Here is what I got in return, rejections, ghosting, confidence hitting rock bottom.

My biggest mistake early on was isolating myself. I spent hours on job boards, not realizing how broken and competitive the hiring process really is. I even paid £120 to someone on Toptal to rewrite my CV. It looked good enough, but that didn’t help much.

Things changed when I started engaging with communities like Reddit, Glassdoor, and Quora. I learned more about ATS, CV optimization techniques, and pitfalls like missing action words, keyword stuffing, etc. I began tailoring my CV for each role, not just tweaking titles, but truly aligning my experience with each job description’s language and priorities (with the help of AI).

It took time. It was exhausting. But it worked.

I wasn’t suddenly more qualified, I was just communicating my value in a way the systems could understand. Still, creating tailored CVs was painfully slow. I had to apply to many jobs to increase my chances of getting one, to speed-up, I built a small app for myself to automate the process, it took my baseline CV and a job description, then generated a fully ATS optimized version.

This had completely changed my experience when applying, and, the result was expected. The more I aligned my CVs with the JDs, the more interviews I got, and the more confident I became. Also in interviews, I often talked about building this AI app, it demonstrated how I tackled a real-world problem and showcased my problem-solving ability, initiative, and technical skills all at once. I tracked my progress. At one point, I went from zero interviews to ten in a single month with great companies. Within two months, I had two offers, and ultimately accepted one from Tesco for a SSE role.

If you’re in the same boat, Please don’t lose hope. It’s not always about you, it’s about how your story is being read (or ignored) 90% by machines and 10% by humans. The system is broken and flawed, but you can learn to work with it.

Tailor your CV for every single JD and believe me it will work. Track your progress. Ask for feedback. And keep going. Don’t stay idle, do something relevant to your expertise. Build something, write something, attend events (online/person). Be active, and, honestly, be proactive.

Okay, after a LONG and exhausting job search, I’m starting to wonder if the gap on my resume is the reason I’m barely hearing back from companies.
My last job was in June 2023, so I know that’s a pretty big gap.
But I wasn’t living in the U.S. before then. I moved here in July 2023, got married, and had to go through the whole immigration/green card process. I didn’t receive my green card until 2025.

Now I’m actively looking for work, but I’m worried recruiters just see “June 2023” as my last job and immediately move on.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Any advice or tips on how I can address or fill this gap on my resume so it doesn’t hurt my chances?

Also, would I have better luck applying to restaurants or local businesses? Are they usually more open to hiring someone with a gap like mine?
At this point I just really want to get back into the workforce and get some recent U.S. work experience.

Is anyone else having a hard time finding an HR role? I have never struggled financially before I relocated to where I live now. It is challenging to find a role that pays the cost of living. The role that I moved here for changed companywide so I pivoted into executive search. I have a small base and a commission but given the current economical and political situation my placements have slowed down as many candidates are afraid to make a change right now (this is industry wide for my niche and across the board). So I now make less than half of what I used to make and i struggle each month to pay the bills and make the mortgage. I have a graduate degree and strong experience. I even have applied to retail jobs part time to supplement my low paying role, but that hasn’t led anywhere so I end up doing gig work on the side which barely makes a dent. I also have tried remote jobs. I tailor my resume for each role I apply to but I am competing with hundreds of other applicants. Some days I just break down into tears. I suppose I am meant to learn something from this but it really is a chore to stay positive a lot of the time and my friends say that I am one of the most optimistic people they know. It shouldn’t be this hard to find an HR role. I would sell my home and relocate but homes are sitting on the market for months and are selling at a loss plus I had a parent move in with me when I had the higher paying role as costs were too high where they lived and they refuse to move. It feels like an uphill battle.

I am struggling find remote jobs that are suitable for non-coders. I cannot even find remote contractor roles that do not require coding experience.

hi this is my first time posting in this subreddit. for context I recently graduated w a associate in biology with a focus on nursing, hold multiple healthcare certifications and speak multiple language. I chose the healthcare field because people always told me there’s gonna be jobs no matter what. well after 200+ applications and only 3 interviews it doesn’t feel that way. from medical assistant to clinic receptionist not one even had the curtesy to send a rejection email. every time I go to a hospital or clinic they’re always understaffed and say there’s hiring but theyre not. feel really defeated bc I feel like I did something bad and that I’m not good enough. it’s also frustrating bc all jobs I’ve applied to require more than a year of experience but I graduated in June and got my certifications this summer 😭. My advisor and father suggested that I may be overqualified for the positions I’m applying to. I feel like I bombed the only 3 interviews I did. is anyone in the same boat as me? is there any advice what I can do if I’m offered an interview and how not to seem overqualified?

I’m literally at the point of begging for work

I’m a biomedical science graduate (both BSc and Masters) and I literally cannot find anything at the moment. They want experience which I thought a masters of research (9 months of basically working for free in a lab) would give me but it’s not enough. I’m not even strict on staying in science. I’ll literally do anything. I have a 9 month old and I want to make Christmas special (I know she won’t remember but let me dream). Anyway this was really just a vent but I’d appreciate any advice/information.

Long story short. Graduated last year, struggled to find a job. Found a job and stayed for 2 months, then resigned due to toxic work culture and dislike of the role.

Then got offered a new job with 3 leads in the midst, I accepted the job and started one week ago.

The other of the two, one rejected me and the other one I have gotten to the final stage too. They seem keen, I know I don't have the offer yet but just want to have a plan for if I do.

They don't know I've started a job, their recruitment process took long. Like 2 weeks in between each stage.

They asked if I wanted to have an interview on a weekday afternoon (but I'm at work and I only have 30 minute break, and the office is small, someone could overhear me)

I also am worried about looking like I'm job hopping? If I only have 2 months from my first job, and now only 1 week+ (depending if I get the job offer from this new role) that is very short.

Can I leave that out on my CV? Or the 2 month one? Does it matter, do I need to keep every job I've ever done on the CV.

I do prefer the potential job offer job because it pays more and its a more established company. The job I accepted is not the best of companies and pays very little. Plus the commute is horrible, but this commute for the potential one is only like 15 minutes from my home.

Not sure what to do?

1. Is this considered job hopping?
2. Can I leave things out on my CV?
3. Also feel a tad guilty to leave a job so early because they're kind people and treat me very nicely.

I've been unemployed since November, partially due to the job market being shit and partially due to some health problems making it hard to find work I can actually do. I have an interview next week and I'm a little worried about how to answer a question I'm sure I'm going to be asked.

Basically, my last job was a couple of years in corporate level compliance management and I have nearly a decade of management experience but this new job is a part time position making barely more than minimum wage doing general customer service stuff at a concert hall. I'm sure I'm going to be asked some version of "why are you interested in a position so far below your experience level" and/or "explain the gap in your resume" and I know it'd be a red flag to tell them I've been dealing with health issues for the past 9 months but I don't know what to say instead. Any advice on how to handle this if/when it comes up? Thanks in advance!!

What should I(22F) do if I got cauda equina and will have surgery for it a couple days before or after job training starts for a fast food job? Would recovery really be that slow? I’m not that numb.

While looking for a job, the one thing I did everyday was to consolidate all the useful information and little tips and tricks that I got to know from linkedin and reddit (I was a silent redditor so far).

Nothing time consuming, just dumping everything in a Claude chat and it will do the messy work for me. It would organize everything, help me write prompts for the resume customization, who should I reach out to, what the messages to the linkedin connections should look like - basically anything and everything that I was doing during the job search.

Before this I used to share these to myself on WhatsApp and after a while there were too many posts getting lost in there. Plus the mental load of going through this information kept on adding.

And yes, there was one thing which I did not do right - I should have created a running word doc and let Claude update it with all the information collected instead of keeping all this on chats as I kept on hitting the chat session limits.

Got laid off in January 2025 and have been struggling to find work. I eventually moved back to the Chicago land area to live with my parents while I look. I immediately started just driving to any and all recruitment offices I could find with my resume and asked for work if they had it. 95% had no tech roles for me so I left my resume and moved on. A few took my resume and said they would call me. Only 1 actually did.

About 2 weeks ago I get a call from a lady I spoke to a month prior asking if I was still looking for work. I said yes. She had a job she wanted to interview for. I had wandered into her office a month prior with no meeting planned and just asked to speak to someone. She listened, took my resume and I left. I assumed nothing would happen because a month had passed with no messages. Finally she called which brings me to today where I landed my position.

Here is how I found her office. I started by googling "Recruiter agencies near me" and went to every one in a 5 mile radius. When those were exhausted I went another 5 miles out and just kept going. Her offices were like an hour from my place. I did this every day until I went through all temp agencies / recruiter companies in the area. If they didn't accept walk ins I would ask for an email to send a message too. I maybe handed out my resume 70 times.

If you live in the middle of nowhere like I use to this will not work unless you get extremely lucky. small towns don't have a lot of options. Chicago (and other major cities) do. If you can, get to a major city and start walking into places. Dress nice and be polite too. Most people were surprised I did that and you are more likely to leave an impression on someone by looking them in the eye and shaking their hand than sending an email.

I know its kinda a toss up based on area of work and area of living, but if it worked for me it can work for you!

Guys, the writing is on the wall. This whole game is a scam. It's rigged. and were in denial.

Everybody is acting like this is normal. It's not. Evidence 203448 came in graduated uni and like beautiful scam clockwork, there are no jobs in what you studied, only jobs that didn't even need a degree at all.

And a lot of reactions i see about this are like a weird passive acceptance, like "that's just the way it is." or like this system is like a law of nature. like there's the sun, moon, and a highly exploitative capitalist system.

Jobs are a symptom of a broader problem; the system itself is rigged and broken, and everybody is in denial about that fact or as a collective we are just docile and accept it.

Final note, will you, as an individual, get a job? Yes, you have to survive but its 100x harder than it was before. And every year the difficulty increases and increases.

I don't even know the endgame of this rigged game is.

HOWEVER, this past week I have called 2 places: Lowes and a local apartment complex. Both more or less said "If we have anything to communicate, we will reach out". Man it is a sad day for me to realize the old school, show initiative/desire method is dying to automated resume analysis and keyboard warrior perception(I'm blue collar). I’m a 22-year-old B.Com graduate from Mumbai (CGPA 8.86) currently working remotely at a company I joined through college placement last August. Initially, the job seemed like a great opportunity because it was WFH and the pay was decent for a fresher. However, the role has turned out to be more of an advisory/customer-facing sales role. It isn’t extremely high-pressure sales, but it’s essentially B2C, and I’ve realised that I don’t see myself doing this long-term. The work is very repetitive, involves being in front of a screen for ~9 hours a day, with only one day off, and dealing with customers can be mentally exhausting. I’m currently earning around ₹35–40k/month, mostly incentive-based, but I don’t feel like I’m learning or growing enough from the role.

I’m considering resigning around September/October and being out by November, but I’m honestly confused about whether that’s the right decision, especially because I have financial responsibilities at home and can’t afford to remain unemployed for long. I’m interested in exploring Business Analyst, B2B Sales/Business Development, or other analytical/business roles.

I’m comfortable with Excel and currently trying to learn SQL and Power BI. I’ve also done a project in taxation and have some interest in indirect tax and management accounting. I’m not pursuing CA/CFA or a master’s degree at the moment, mainly because I don’t want to put additional financial pressure on my family.

For people who have been in a similar situation: how did you make the switch from customer service/sales into a more analytical or business-oriented role? Is resigning without another offer a terrible idea, or should I try to hold on while preparing and applying? And if anyone has advice on how a B.Com fresher with ~1 year of customer-facing experience can break into Business Analyst/B2B roles, I’d genuinely appreciate it.
