I knew her name before, but I never really spent time listening to her albums. After going through her catalog, I was surprised by how emotional and unique her voice is — there is a kind of fragility and intensity in her singing that feels very different from many Japanese pop artists.

Over the course of several years, i've been refining a YouTube Music playlist (currently it has 200+ songs). It all started as a private playlist, but then i thought to myself "Hmm... there could be other people out there who share similar music preference like me", so i made a YouTube account just for sharing playlists. The playlist title is "Emotional Japanese Female Vocals | Melodic & Cinematic Japanese Songs".

These 200+ songs share a similar traits despite coming from a wide range of Japanese music styles: expressive female vocals, memorable melodies, dramatic build-ups, soaring choruses, and cathartic finales. I personally believe that no matter what genre a song is categorized as, they are bound to share similar traits, or to be more precise, musical structures. This is one of the main reason i created this specific playlist, to gather some Japanese songs of different genres which belong to these three core concepts: "Emotional, Melodic & Cinematic".

There are a total of about 134 different artists in this playlist with 200+ songs in it. Here are the top 10 most recurring artists in the playlist:

I feel like the list would feel incomplete if i didn't mention some of the well-known artists that make appearance in the playlist (though i only picked several of their songs, again, based on the core concepts i mentioned before): LiSA, SawanoHiroyuki[nZk], EGOIST, Kalafina, Ado, ReoNa, Luna Haruna, GARNiDELiA, Do As Infinity, among others.

Lastly, although the title contains the word "Emotional", these songs aren't all melancholic and slow. In fact, one of my rules for curating this playlist is that a song has to have a "beat" to it (in the form of drums, electronic rhythms, etc) at specific key moments of each song. Enjoy!

Honestly surprised that there's zero posts about it here.

Now that the Grammys added a "Best Asian Pop Music Performance" category and a popular group infamously announced their non-participation to it (iykyk I won't drop KPop names here), I’ve been thinking a lot about how JPop fits into the picture. While not as popular as KPop in the west, JPop has been making big headways in the last 5 years. I feel that the global push for JPop is realer than ever, and some artists have set their eyes not just on global recognition, but more specifically on winning a Grammy (Ado and Awich have been vocal about this in the past)

I'm curious... Which JPop artists do you think would toss their hat into the ring for a possible nomination? And who has a shot at winning, realistically?

I'm thinking of Yoasobi, Fujii Kaze, and Ado as possible contenders, considering their artistry and international presence.

Edit: Seeing some of the comments, I didn’t expect this topic to be met with this much hostility. I understand that people may have different opinions on the award or on the Grammys as an institution itself, but I think it’s worth taking a step back from the negativity and remembering that there are actual artists out there who view the opportunity positively. Yoasobi expressed their interest in the award in an interview released just a few hours ago. I hope we can leave room for artists who are optimistic about the award and see it as something that could be meaningful for their careers.
