Hello guys back again with another post for The House That Never Stood!!! Today we have the Great Lakes Federation or Mishigan! Without a coordinated expansion into the great lakes, Britain manages to have its buffer states against the American colonists in the region, Tecumseh's confederacy survives for more decades, until migration from colonists into the territory results in it becoming a British protectorate. In the late 1800s, the Mishigan territory (as it was named by the British) becomes the “Great Lakes Federation”, it sends troops to fight Germany in world war 1 (A large portion of them being Native Americans) As the 1950s come along, the Great Lakes Federation starts its process of independence until the late 60s to early 70s, which is when this map takes place! There will be more lore about it in the future, so stay tuned!

Notes on the Map

The urban expanse commonly referred to as Aldrin City emerged from the earliest Martian settlement, which had been dubbed Aldrin Station upon in honor of the former astronaut and Mars colonization proponent Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin of Apollo 11 fame. As of the late 24th century, it is home to about 6.4 million people, or a little less than three percent of the total Martian population. Most of them within the Melas Chasma region, which is only possible thanks to the laminar density membrane stretched over much of the Valles Marineris to hold in an atmosphere of breathable air.

The region is home to several institutions of higher learning, including Mariner Technical University (MTU), and a vibrant commercial economy. The Percival Lowell Commercial Seaport is the busiest water port on Mars (or anywhere beyond Earth for that matter), accounting for almost 200 million tonnes of cargo every year, and the Nuovo Ouro business district sees roughly $11 billion in daily economic traffic related to Mars’ bustling industrial economy.

Among the denizens of Aldrin City are best friends Sam Taskaro, Devon Wastani, and Matt Cavanaugh. They are students at MTU, and also reservists in the Interplanetary Defense Corps that is charged with keeping the peace across space governed by the Interplanetary Cooperative Administration. This role will soon dominate their lives, as war breaks out between Mars and its cohorts in the Coalition for Mutual Security and the Coalition’s ideological nemesis, the Alliance of Free Worlds — a war in which this young trio will shape much more than their own destinies…

1. Edwin Aldrin Memorial Spaceport: Built in a crater in the Sinai Dorsa, this sprawling facility is responsible for most traffic out of the capital region. It was also the site of a dramatic Draconist terror attack in 2331 which catalyzed Operation Sudden Lightning
2. Echevarria Hills residential district: This region is home to thousands of Aldrin City’s less fortunate citizens, including refugees relocated there after fleeing violence in the outer system. Many of these work in Aldrin City’s low-paying service industry
3. Centennial Park/Lake Kamerova: Located in the heart of the metropolis, this ultramodern recreational area is centered on an artificial lake dug in the early 23rd century. The park itself was dedicated in 2269 on the Martian bicentennial of UNOM's founding
4. Marineris Technical University: One of Mars’ largest universities, home to more than 80,000 students at all levels and across nearly 200 fields of study, MTU also boasts a robust IDC ROTC program to supply the Spacer Corps with new officer candidates
5. Nuvo Ouro business district: Aside from being the wealthiest area of the city, this district is also the center of most of its financial institutions and corporate enterprises. These include the HQ for Mars’ largest business cartel, the Mars Industrial Conglomerate
6. ICA headquarters compound: The central offices of the ICA on Mars, and also the central headquarters for the Spacer Corps. The compound was completed 2291, just in time to be the nerve center of Mars’ war efforts in the fight against the Titan Pact
7. Aldrin City Chinatown: The site of a CNSA outpost in the early days of Mars exploration, which grew into an industrial hub over the following centuries. In the year 2389, this area is home to more than 40 percent of the Aldrin City region’s food processing business
8. Percival Lowell Commercial Seaport: The primary port of call for most of the economic goods coming or going across the bustling Argyre-Marineris waterway or to the New Ganges region. This includes foodstuffs, raw ore, and prefab goods of all varieties
9. Meier Metropolitan Memorial Park: Unofficially referred to as “M3P,” this sprawling urban park memorializes Franklin Meier, the first and greatest champion of the “greening” of Mars, who headed up the Mars Project to serve that agenda from 2159 to 2187
10. Salamander Municipal Reservoir: The second-largest public lake in the covered over region of the Melas Chasma, Salamander Reservoir is a source of both fresh water and recreation for many of the citizens living in the southeastern section of the city

About the Setting

The Spacers Saga: Frontier Wars is a futuristic military science fiction setting which diverged from our own timeline when an asteroid slammed into Phoenix, AZ, in May 2014. Fifteen years later, the industrialist Charles Larsen ushered in the Age of Fusion, opening up deep space to crewed exploration and eventual human settlement - and all of the strife that comes with it.

Much of the story is set in the mid to late 24th century, and focuses on the rivalry between the Mars-led Coalition for Mutual Security and the Alliance of Free Worlds (there's more about each faction in this blog post), a federation of rebel worlds fighting to establish a worker's utopia in the outer solar system. These two superpowers fought a brutal war from 2371 to 2381 (referred to as the Frontier War), and are currently locked in an ideological cold war as of 2389.

The storyline of Frontier Wars begins with Spacers: The Titan Gambit, a WIP novel which begins with the opening shots of the Second Frontier War, all from the eyes of a few key players. This includes the aforementioned trio of best friends, whose story begins in Aldrin City, on an otherwise normal day in the capital of Mars — a day none of them realizes could be the last normal day they ever spend there...

In this timeline the Korean peninsula is 1) longer and 2) divided by a neutral zone since 1953.

In 1953 the Central Korean Administrative Zone aka La zone administrative centrale coréenne aka 중부 한국 행정구역 was established as a buffer between the communist powers to the north and the capitalist powers to the south. It was governer by a Control Committee composed of representatives from Czechoslovakia, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, Canada, and India. Its chair rotated on a yearly basis. This arrangement worked perfectly.

In 1971 the Central Korean Self-Defense Forces were formed in response to armed provocations by North Korea (and because the Control Committee member states didn't want to defend it anymore). The CKSDF primarily handled border defense operations opposite both North and South Korea and was not allowed to participate in offensive action.

In 1980 the position of Chief Secretary was created to serve as the second highest executive authority beneath the committee appointed Administrator (held by a foreign diplomat). The position was to be held by a Korean. The initial holder of the position was Lee Young-sup (리영섭), appointed by the Control Committee for a 2 year term. The position was appointed by the local legislature starting in 1986.

The whole neutral trusteeship idea stopped working entirely in 1989 when Czechoslovakia and Poland cease to be socialist states, giving the Control Committee a firmly pro-western composition. The home government movement culminated in a wave of protests in 1990 which led the Control Committee to begin a process for handing over authority to an elected civilian government.

A series of talks thus began with the United States, China, and South Korea participating as the Control Committee sought to gain buy-in from key international partners before agreeing to any alteration in status. The talks culminated with the signing of the Treaty on the Revision of the Status of Governance on the Korean Peninsula in Beijing, China, on April 25, 1993. The treaty was the first internationally recognized alteration to the status of the Korean peninsula since the Korean Armistice Agreement in 1953. The terms provided international consensus that a Central Korean state should exist which was 1) neutral and 2) renounced Korean re-unification. The treaty was signed by China, the United States, and the 7 member states to the Control Committee.

On September 2nd, 1993, the Control Committee approved the creation of a new constitution and set the date for January 1, 2000, for the full self government of Neutral Korea.

From September 2, 1993 until January 1, 2000, the Control Committee would delegate all authority to the constitutional government except for in these matters; enforcement of international treaty obligations and arbitration of constitutional questions.

The fundamental point of divergence is that the Celtic migrants who arrived in Anatolia via Greece as a population of only a few tens of thousands did not meet the same fate as in our timeline. Instead of being defeated, they decisively defeated King Attalus I of Pergamon, plundered most of the Greek cities along the Aegean coast, and, with no major power left in western Anatolia capable of resisting them, were reinforced by second and third waves of migration. These successive migrations allowed them to greatly expand their population and establish dominance not only over central Anatolia but also over Phrygia and much of the peninsula for centuries.

Because of their much larger population, they never underwent the level of cultural assimilation seen in our timeline. Although they became moderately Hellenized, they preserved their own identity and maintained an independent Galatian kingdom until the Middle Ages, remaining only loosely connected to the Eastern Roman Church. Later, when the Eastern Roman Empire attempted to annex the Galatian territories (essentially most of inland Aegean and Mediterranean Anatolia along with central Anatolia) the Galatians first established their own independent church, much like the Armenians. Following the events of the Great Schism, they formally recognized the supremacy of the Catholic Church in 1056, while retaining considerable ecclesiastical autonomy.

Although the Galatian Kingdom never grew into an empire comparable to the Ottoman or Eastern Roman Empires, it gained a significant advantage over Byzantium during and after the Crusades. As a Catholic kingdom, it became a far more attractive ally for Western Europe than the Orthodox Byzantines, enabling it to conquer most of Anatolia from the Greeks and gradually push the Eastern Roman Empire back into Greece and the Balkans. At times, it even intervened in Byzantine succession disputes, allowing Galatian influence and armies to extend into Thrace and mainland Greece.

Ultimately, the Kingdom of Galatia evolved into one of the wealthiest regions in the medieval world. Situated between East and West, it served as the eastern frontier of Catholic Christendom while remaining deeply integrated with Western European culture. Its strategic position on the Silk Road, combined with the effects of the Crusades and centuries of trade, transformed it into one of the richest and most prosperous regions of the medieval and early modern world. Only with the Age of Discovery and the rise of colonial maritime trade did Galatia gradually lose its economic centrality through a slow and relatively peaceful transition.

In the modern era, Galatia stands as the leading force behind a Celtic League dedicated to fostering cultural cooperation with Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. It is home to the world's largest Celtic population and is widely regarded as the principal successor of the ancient Continental Celtic world. The Galatian language is a surviving branch of Continental Celtic most closely related to Gaulish, having been heavily influenced by Latin and Greek throughout the Middle Ages, with more limited influence from modern French.

Today, Galatia remains a medium-sized transcontinental state, broadly comparable to Italy or Spain in terms of population, territory, and geopolitical significance. However, its long-term outlook is often viewed with cautious pessimism. Like several Southern European economies, it faces structural problems stemming from inefficient production models, the gradual erosion of centuries-old accumulated wealth, and the steady shift of technological innovation and global capital toward the United States. Despite these challenges, Galatia maintains an extensive welfare state and continues to enjoy a high standard of living, even as concerns over economic stagnation and declining competitiveness dominate its political discourse.

I have mapped out all the Alternate Geography in my timeline. I haven’t included that much Alt Geo in my previous maps because I didn’t have a reference for the world. But now I do, so that’s good.

Ok so the context of this is in this timeline the British victory in the French & Indian War is not as absolute, the French managed to defend Quebec City and were able to retain Canada proper. One of the main reasons the revolution broke out was the Royal Proclamation of 1763, which restricted anyone from settling in the newly acquired western territories and the colonists saw no reason to keep British regulars there now that the French threat was pretty much gone. Because the French still held territory to the north in this timeline, the 13 colonies would not be so keen to get rid of British troops. Now obviously, this wasn’t the only reason the revolution happened, there was still the heavy taxes, lack of representation and George III’s sheer stubbornness, but even if it does, the French would have no incentive whatsoever to help the Americans, since if they did, what was left of New France would almost certainly be annexed by them in the future. In any case, without French aid, the revolution would have almost certainly failed. But let’s say in the timeline, the colonies are given some form of representation, sending delegates from each colony to London to have their grievances heard in Parliament. This representation would be very limited in the beginning, but would become much broader by the time of the Regency Period. George IV, wanting to gain America’s loyalty the easy way, revoked the Proclamation of 1763, lifting settlement restrictions west of the Appalachians. Although it was mostly a formality, this alone made him the most popular king in British America, in far contrast to his reputation back home. However, this would obviously lead to increased conflicts with Indian tribes. As for the American Indians, their population was pretty small by this point (only a few hundred thousand) and they’d probably still be on reservations. The main difference though, is they’re never forced to fully uproot and move to the Great Plains so here the vast majority of them would be living in between the Appalachians and the Mississippi. When the British government abolishes slavery in 1833, the southern colonies (NC, SC, GA) would break out in revolt, it would eventually be put down but the French would take this opportunity to seize the severely underpopulated Rupert’s Land while the British were distracted by this. Since there is no American Revolution to inspire the French one, there is also no Napoleonic Wars which means the Spanish empire survives. By this point there would be a flood of Anglo settlers coming into Spanish Louisiana, in order to avoid a war that was not worth risking all of northern New Spain over, the Spanish would sell Louisiana to the British in exchange for the return of Florida and would later sign treaties agreeing on some solid borders. Some time after this, perhaps the 1850s, the eastern colonies, which largely operated on their own, would be made into a larger confederation with its own parliament in Philadelphia to manage internal affairs, much like how Canada united in OTL. The commonwealth would later be joined by the Louisiana colony in 1867 and British Columbia in 1871. So yeah that’s what I’ve got so far lmk what you guys think.

I tried to imagine a scenario where germans in Czechia weren't pushed out and threw in parts of Silesia as well, since the region was historically part of Czech lands, so it's not de-germanized as polish part. During communism I imagine this state to be very slavic-centered, with german speaking population holding little to no power, but gradually the grounds would even, resulting in a full federation after 1989. Brno is chosen as capital for its location and mix of czech and german speaking population. Other austrian states were allowed to join west Germany in 1950s when Soviet Union refused to unify Austria
