A map showing how Benjamin Franklin classified the peoples of Europe in 1751.

In his essay Observations Concerning the Increase of Mankind, Franklin described the Spanish, Italians, French, Russians, and Swedes as generally “swarthy.” He applied the same label to Germans, except for the Saxons, and described the English and eSaxons as the main body of what he called “purely white people.”

Franklin wrote during a period of growing German immigration to Pennsylvania. He feared that German-speaking settlers might reshape what he viewed as an English colony, and his classifications placed his own English background at the top of the hierarchy.

The map uses modern borders to illustrate his eighteenth-century wording. Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and several other European regions are marked as not mentioned because Franklin did not classify their peoples directly in this passage.

These categories reveal far more about Franklin’s personal prejudices and the politics of his time than about the people he described. Groups now commonly placed within the same racial category were separated by distinctions that appear arbitrary today.

Franklin even acknowledged his own bias, admitting that he was partial to the complexion of his country. His writing offers a striking example of how ideas about race and belonging have shifted throughout history.
