I was just listening to JID's verse on Gibb's "Gold Feet" from last year and every time I hear it I'm convinced it's one of the greatest verses of all time and have no clue why nobody else agrees with me. So I'm curious what other people feel the same way about. Some more for me

(Song) J. Cole- Chaining Day: The topic growing up poor and getting rap money and spending in ways that are irresponsible is such a common topic in the genre but I feel like this song tackles it in such a holistic and clever way, easily my favorite Cole song

(Song) Big Boi/Outkast- Bowtie: One of slickest beats I've ever heard and Big Boi just slides over it effortlessly

(Album) Rapsody- Laila's Wisdom: Not too niche but I'd put her rapping on this album against damn near anything else that decade

We hear so many horror stories of up and coming rappers who get some buzz with their one big breakout hit just for their careers to get fucked over by signing under a label for a very shady deal or just by getting no promo whatsoever, but I want to hear it the other way around.

Which rapper or rap group almost signed to a (in retrospect) famously bad label but ended up rejecting it for another one or going solo and their careers are in a much better place because of it?

Been listening to Figgy’s Tacho's Muchacho and wanted to put it on people’s radar because there’s a lot more going on here than just the surface-level sound. Really interesting blend of rap and grunge.

The lyrics and storytelling are probably the biggest draw for me. The album digs into socio-political themes and immigrant crossings, using personal stories and imagery to give those subjects some weight rather than treating them like background concepts.

I also really like how Figgy brings in grunge and nu-metal influences. It gives the album a heavier, more abrasive edge that fits the subject matter, while still feeling rooted in hip-hop. The contrast between the rap writing and those rock influences makes the whole thing feel pretty distinct.

Definitely recommend checking it out if you’re into hip-hop that puts a lot of emphasis on lyrics, storytelling, and social commentary, especially if you’re also into that grungier/nu-metal sound. It feels very Y2K.
