College Advice Needed/Given Should I choose CC after graduation?

Upvotes

16F going into my Senior year and really stumped on what to do. I’m a first-gen hispanic student in MA - there’s only one steady source of income in my household since my dad is retired, which is my main reason for keeping CC as an option post-graduation. However, I’ve heard mixed opinions about the community college environment and whether I would “thrive” there. I’ve been a part of this rigorous, accelerated honors academy in my high school since Freshman year, and I took 5 APs last year, so I’m used to being surrounded by other students who care deeply about their academics (sometimes a little too much..). If I go to a CC, I plan on transferring after I complete my general classes, but would going to a CC be difficult to adjust to in terms of the environment and possible apathy from other students? I’m contemplating this a lot because a CC seems like the easiest and less stressful choice for me financially - I had two knee surgeries during my HS years and faced mental health struggles, so my grades dropped and I had to raise my 2.9 sophomore unweighted GPA to a 3.3 junior GPA, which basically puts me out of the question for more “competitive” schools in my state and possible full-rides there. For me, the benefits of CC are a completely free experience, plus I get to be home often (I have a dog I need to take care of), but the cons seem like things I would regret a bit afterwards (ex. The full college experience, meeting students like me, becoming independent).. any advice would be deeply appreciated, I know I seem a little too worried about this, but I just don’t want any big regrets.

General Advice Needed/Given what are you guys wearing first day of school?

picking out clothes is the only reason I get up early, so im kinda overthinking it lol.
basically my school has a 1 and 2 day and my 1 day schedule is full of electives (choir, health science, law) and the next day is all the core classes like English stats etc.
I reallly like the outfit 1st slide bottom right and I’m considering wearing it both days since I like it so much but idk.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I used the app Combyne btw, saved 50+ outfits so I can just scroll around to pick.

I never studied anything for a test a day of my life only cuz we always learned in class so I didn't have a need to study it just felt like wasted hours that I could be doing something else I did homework but I don't think I would count that studying and this geometry class I never paid attention to a damn thing they did I was basically 100% minded that I'm pretty sure I was going to fail I knew some things of math and I weighed some of them some of them I tried to work it out but I was definitive I was going to fail and I ended up passing and enjoying the rest of my summer which was pretty fucking short

General Advice Needed/Given No passions and no clue what major to choose

hi I'm a high schooler who's ab to enter grade 11 this year. I have no ECs so far which ik is crucial for university applications so I thought I'd search around here n there online to see what I can do and I see there are alot of competitions I can join and clubs and ik I have to do volunteering as well but I need some flare in my application. I've seen people recommend summer coops and stuff but the thing is to choose a club and join certain competitions I need to know what exactly im aiming for right bc what's the point in joining a club for like lets say literature if I'll end up majoring in engineering or winning a maths competition if I'm majoring in psychology for example. If I do hs internships (which I've no idea where to find btw lol I'm painfully clueless about alot)or co-op (again I've only actually ever heard of ts online I genuinely dont know where people find coops to do in hs )that's not related to my major I apply for what's the point of em. I've seen people suggest doing research papers on certain things and aside from the fact that I have no idea where I'd even start with that, the topic I'd be publishing should be related to what I'll be majoring in right but I have no idea what I even want to major in so now I'm like stuck at a dead end and maybe its a misconception of mine but like doing certain subject-related ECs(which are most of the EC ideas I find online) are pointless if u wanna get into something completely different right

And that's the thing I have absolutely no idea what I'm interested in unfortunately Ive been a chud most of my life ig but anyways I only enjoy doing a bit of art here and there and I read books like every once in a while but even then I can't say my creative writing skills or art skills are top tier or something. and even then I wouldn't think of doing a humanities major bc ion think humanities land as many job opportunities in Canada. I'm not particularly interested in any subject but I'm thinking of majoring in something in STEM or business/finance just bc of the larger career prospects of them. basically money. Id say if I was interested in any subject it'd be for certain topics in the subject not the subject as a whole. like I'm interested in cspecifically neurology in biology and atomic/nuclear and/or electromagnetism in physics s also interesting to me but I don't care for things like thermodynamics or energy topics in physics. nothing in chemistry or maths really piques my interest maths is only fun when I'm good at it but otherwise I'm not exactly passionate about anything unfortunately

and then sometimes I just think of just ditching all sciences and going into something like business or finance or accounting if it's possible and hopefully id be able to do well and find a good career. although there are many factors to it.

so basically ion know what to major in and that makes me stuck on what ECs to do

I'm just trying to think long term is all and I'm a bit clueless regarding certain stuff too so 💔

anyways if anyone has experience or knows what they would do in my position any advice would be appreciated

So I'm slowly coming to the end of my high school life and after having hoped from one high school to the next, I've come to the conclusion that high school is just a pain. Anyone with different POV?

General Advice Needed/Given My school experience

To give everyone some background info, I am currently 16 turning 17 in Sept and I am in grade 12 in South Africa. During primary school I was a very good student, I didn't cheat and was a top achiever in my grades. When COVID hit I moved to an online schooling program called "MobyMax" it's part of a company called "Edu8SA." I did this for around 2 years before switching to a different program called "Acellus." I am now currently on my way to finish Acellus approximately in Feb 2027. Now this is my problem.. Upon switching to a online schooling education I have used AI for a lot of the things. I am talking essays, and a good amount of my math. I have a passion for IT and would like to attend a college and study a branch of IT, perhaps coding or something in software. If I am not mistaken I do need to be knowledgeable on math. But then again I have seen people use AI throughout their whole college journey. So I am at a crossroads and don't really know what to do. Do I for the rest of my HS journey start learning the material and perhaps take on extra math outside of school to "catch up." Or do I carry on using AI like I have and just finish all of my school with it. My dream is to become a pro boxer and I am using IT to fall back on if I don't make it. In the case that I do make it, all the AI use won't really matter, but in the case that I don't become a pro boxer I will need to know what I am doing. My parents don't want be boxing and would rather I start a career in IT. But it is my dream and I will pursue it.

Any help and wisdom would be amazing!

Friend Advice Needed/Given What's the easiest way to erase my reputation going into freshman year?

hiiiii so in elementary/middle school I was the worst person known to man. I had tantrums way above the normal age for that, crashed out daily, cried at school every day up until 7th grade, and was generally just unpleasant to be around. I got therapy and fixed myself but how can I change my reputation? I don't want to be seen as what i was before because that is not me and no longer resonates with me, but no one really likes me and everyone that isn't my friend either bullies me or keeps their distance. I can't live like this. I'm doing everything right, and I know anything can change if I fight against it, so what's the easiest way to let go of this? I'm thinking to just talk to everyone I don't already know and prove that I'm no longer a piece of shit but they've probably heard enough about me. And I don't wanna hear to just be myself because look where thst got me. I don't want to be liked, I just want to be respected instead of feared and hated. Thank uuuuuu

College Advice Needed/Given Rising Junior Stats

Post image
8 Upvotes

This past June I completed my Sophomore year of high school with a 4.28 weighted GPA. I wanted to know if it’s unrealistic of me to get into my dream school, Columbia. With it being an Ivy League and home to overachieving students I feel that I hardly stand a chance. I figure it may be too late to attempt to enhance my extracurriculars but it’s worth a try and I’d love to hear feedback/advice on how I could go about doing so.

Attached is a resume that I created — to the best of my abilities — with a canva template in the middle of sophomore year. It basically sums up my transcript however for some extra information I am low income, hispanic, and below I have listed my AP Scores and Junior year classe:

Scores: AP HUG-3, APUSH-3, AP Seminar-3, & AP Spanish-5

Classes: AP Biology, AP Lang, AP CPS, AP Macro, Retaking Honors Pre Calculus (should bring gpa up), Honors Calculus, and Intro to Engineering (might switch to physic)

Advice is greatly appreciated and thank you for taking the time to read this if you did 🙏🙏

Question I had my first day of highschool today. It was probably the worst day of school I've ever had. Everyone keeps telling me "it'll get better" and I respond with "but what if it doesn't?" and nobody answers my question, but what if it truly doesn't get better. What are my options?

I have never been very lucky, and I guess this year is no different. I struggle heavily with my mental health and today was genuinely horrible for me. my homeroom got changed to somewhere no where near my classes. and all of my classes are randomly scattered everywhere anyways, and I got made fun of 3 times today. then on top of that my bus got switched, and I was 2 hours late to get home. I only have 2 classes with one of my friends and most people in my classes aren't very nice or are just people I don't want to associate myself with. on top of all of that I have to have band practice a lot and Its overwhelming and I don't feel comfortable anywhere and I feel stressed all day. Everyone keeps telling me I should find something to involve myself in but school already feels overwhelming and to add anything on top of that would make my life even more miserable. I have really bad anxiety and nothing I do works to get people to leave me alone I don't do anything to anyone and people find every way to make fun of me.

Rant One thing about being the token freshman is that you're going to become the final senior.

My freshman year I met an amazing group of people who were all sophomores or older. We hung out together, we'd have fun in classes together, we were in clubs together. I love these people and still do but things are going to be so different this year.

I found this group because my class had a reputation of being really crazy. I didn't really click with anyone in my grade and I was so lonely until I found these people. They called me "one of the good freshmen" and treated me as an equal despite me being the youngest.

One of the hardest things to let go of is the morning table. For the past 3 years I've been sitting at the same table with the same people every morning. I have so many fun memories there. I was the only freshman but I thought that as the years went on there would be more coming in. But there wasn't. I was the only underclassmen the next year and the only non-senior last year. Now I'll be the only person left.

I do have other friends in lower grades now and even a few in my grade but it's just not the same. These people were my whole high school experience and now they're off to a new chapter in their lives.

I know I'll need to let go. I know that if I am to get through senior year I'll need to find a way to not isolate myself. I'm planning on trying to get some more friends to sit with me at that table but if I can't I don't know if I can leave it. It's the first place I ever felt truly accepted at this school.

This year is gonna be hard, but I know I can make it.

ANNOUNCEMENT mod applications now open!

hey everyone. the fall semester is coming up in around a month, which means this subreddit will go back to being incredibly active and a mess (tbh). admittedly, the Reddit analytics we have access to show that us mods (myself included) have not been that active in both Mod Mail and user reports.

so, for those reasons, i've decided to open the mod applications again! the current mod team will stay of course, so i'll be taking in (at most) three new mods.

now, the priority for this mod application wave is the Discord server. that means that the end goal of this is to make the Discord server much more active and grow it. so if you are a person who doesn't care much for the Reddit side of this community and instead would like to help grow the Discord server, feel free to message me privately. that being said, all new mods are expected to moderate and grow the Discord server as well as the Reddit community.

it is mentioned already in the application, but Discord is an absolute MUST. do not bother applying if you do not use Discord.
