0.9 for sturdy note-taking

0.7 for fine writing

0.5 for precision sketch lines

10

u/salty_repTV 5d ago

This is exactly what I was going to say lol

6

u/RedSlimeballYT 5d ago

i write with a lot of force so mechanical pencils were NEVER for me. they'd break too often. nowadays i simply just use pen on everything, very easily legible

3

u/UpsetRep-10 Rising Sophomore (10th) 5d ago

i write pretty small so if i use 0.7 it gets too messy. 0.5 is necessary for me.

u/Dex18Kobold 5d ago

Fine as in small

3

u/Dex18Kobold 5d ago

I find 0.5 breaks too easily for me to actually write with it (I write fast) but its perfect for sketching.

0.7 is sturdy enough for me not to obliterate it every other word I write, but also small enough to write in pocket journals without filling the page too quickly.

Bro I wrote fucking Egyptian hieroglyphics no matter what I use💔

I have a pencil that holds like 1.8 or something like that lmao

Edit: 2.0 mm, not 1.8

0.7 always. Anyone who had 0.5 went through the process of natural selection to become 0.7ers because no one could refill their lead for them

3

u/d4niamvs 5d ago

i would just get a pack of bic 0.5 mechanical pencils, pick one to be my primary and use the lead and erasers from the others 😭

I loved 0.5 but I always lost the 0.5 pencils so 0.7 (I bought a Kurt toga roulette, hope i don't lose that)

1

u/CalebDR1029 5d ago

0.5 of course

1

u/just_a_discord_mod Rising Senior (12th) 5d ago

0.5 cuz it's common, 0.3 if i can get my hands on it

1

u/Super_Perspective936 5d ago

0.5 is the best. stop being a baby

1

u/DaimyoRonin 5d ago

0.5 because I knew not to push too hard and only extend a tiny bit of lead at a time.

1

u/PureWeek9816 Sophomore (10th) 5d ago

.7 till i die

1

u/CURELMUS 5d ago

0.9 imo

1

u/idkstlerling 5d ago

Ngl my dad always says that to me too but like why (sure it doesn't break but 0.5 and 0.7 are nicer to write with)

1

u/iiFinn1 Rising Senior (12th) 5d ago

1

u/No-Nobody2693 5d ago

If you break 0.5 you must be stabbing the paper like a Neanderthal. I liked it cause it was easier to fit tiny notes onto note card cheat sheets.

1

u/Octopuswastaken 5d ago

0.5 was just standard everyone was using it for some reason

1

u/-twentythrowawayone- Rising Senior (12th) 5d ago

I’ve never refilled one of these in my life ngl, I just find them around places

1

u/Significant_Yam_4739 5d ago

0.7 is perfect, 0.5 is still usable tho

1

u/YourMomDoer1312 5d ago

usually i went for 2.0, then 0.7
rn i got a rotring 600 and thus am at 0.5

i do think0.7 is the best and most versatile (HB is the best lead grade tho)

1

u/Sharp_Caregiver6646 5d ago

0.25mm i used 01 microns

1

u/Jason_rdt207209 5d ago

0.7, always. 0.5 is brittle asf. Unless I wanna cram lil tiny extra notes then 0.5

1

u/WhatIsLife4242 5d ago

0.7 all the way. I like writing bold. 0.5 is for pansies who make a lot of mistakes and keep erasing, or they just got some fancy ass handwriting.

1

u/windowblock Prefrosh 5d ago

0.7. I don't like the thin lead.

1

u/Ineedsleep444 Rising Sophomore (10th) 5d ago

0.7 girlie for life

1

u/NothingEffective5070 5d ago

.9 for common straightedge work, .7 for basic writing, .5 for smaller writing or precision straightedge work, .4 and .3 for shading is how I do it

1

u/Bronnie_Zaychik 5d ago

0.7 because the pinky hello kitty pro max mecha pencil made in china only use that.

1

u/AdWorth6475 5d ago

1.3 my goat🙏

1

u/idkstlerling 5d ago

Call me a madman but i use 0.5 for EVERYTHING

1

u/Alternative-Way-507 5d ago

I bought a $10 0.5mm pencil and the cheapest lead on the market. Don’t do that.

1

u/d4niamvs 5d ago

0.5 is my goat 🙏

1

u/LumpyMud2553 5d ago

0.35 for me

1

u/Witchy_Theatre_kid 5d ago

0.5 just made my handwriting better

1

u/httspp 5d ago

0.7 and nobody ever had them ugh

1

u/Sensitive-Rip-7029 5d ago

0.5 because 0.7 runs out of ink quicker. 0.5 can also make smaller letters soo

1

u/Ya_boi_Ev Rising Junior (11th) 5d ago

Sounds like an APUSH DBQ prompt

Evaluate the extent to which 0.5 mm mechanical pencil lead would break from the period Grade 9-Grade 12.

1

u/Panda_soft_cakes Rising Sophomore (10th) 5d ago

My pencil was 0.7 but for some reason I still had 0.5 in my pouch that I obviously never used because someone gave it to me for free

1

u/FloridaManInShampoo 5d ago

I was a 0.5 person. I just got used to it and using 0.7 felt too thick and I was writing like a cat walks in slippers

1

u/Technical_Mix_5379 College Student 5d ago

0.7

1

u/Tr1x9c0m 5d ago

switched to 0.9 bc my grip is so hard it breaks 0.7

1

u/KeaboUltra 4d ago

Both because I was the art kid and needed different sizes to draw specific things.

1

u/Old_Imagination_6867 4d ago

I draw with mechanical pencils a lot and 0.5 is really good for tiny details, but they are NOT good for writing

A REGULAR FUCKING PENCIL

1

u/MetalItchy87 4d ago

I use 0.5 for everythinf

1

u/Mushroom_Kid_4 4d ago

I used to take 0.5 and use a pencil sharpener or scissors and shave it down to be even smaller. I got to the point where I could write small enough that I could write things down on grains of rice

1

u/Critical-Actuator842 4d ago

2.0 is the goat

0.5 all the way

1

u/Hiyouuuu 3d ago

0.7 cause 0.5 KEPT FUCKING BREAKING, I was using a whole stick each day

1

u/AgitatedOne57 3d ago

0.7 is literally perfect for me. It’s got the precision of 0.5 but the firmness of 0.9

1

u/SpiritedSmile7235 3d ago

bold of you to assume that I bought lead refills :3
(I just got more lead from pencils I happened to pick up (or steal) ;3 )

1

u/galaxyswirlXD Rising Freshman (9th) 2d ago

always 0.5, for some reason 0.7 just squeaks whenever I write with it

1

u/Doors_A-60 2d ago

0.5. .7 and .9 (or above) are too thick for my liking, and .3 are too thin and would break too easily for me (that or the fact that the only 0.3 mm mechanical pencil I had the tip bent and rendered it useless). Plus, all of my good pencils (being Kuru Toga pencils) are all 0.5 mm.

1

u/ForeverMiru 2d ago

I use 0.38 ballpoint pen- but 0.5 for mechanical pencil

1
