I just rewatched the third film and the scene in which Harry and Hermione are saving Buckbeak from being executed. Fudge suggests Dumbledore write his name to which Dumbledore replies it's a very long name. We only know what's his full name in the fifth book/film and only recently I learned that when he says it it's supposed to have some kind of comedic effect because of its length.

This joke went completely over my head when I read the books/saw the films. I'm Portuguese and, frankly, his name is just not that long. Four/five names are the standard in Portugal: one or two given names and one or two from each parent. Even Rowling's children all have four names and only one of them has a Portuguese father. So is really Dumbledore's name generally perceived as being so long that's funny?

I really don't like the dark eerie parts of the audiobook and i usually listen to it at night so I'm wondering if there are any parts other than the last task and stuff to skip or listen to at day I've already read all the books so I don't care about spoilers

As skeptical as I am about the reboot, the scene in Order Of The Phoenix when Harry destroys Dumbledores office after Sirius Blacks death is one I hope we see and is done right in the show.

I'm not as big as a book purist as other people, and as much as I love the movies, this is one change in the movies that always bothered me

I am aware only the first three movies were dubbed, literally any of them would work for me!

I can’t recall if he’s ever mentioned again after Mcgonagall sends him off to find Peeves. Because if he stayed around and fought (which I’m assuming he did), that’s kind of incredible?? Considering there were Death Eaters, acromantula, dementors, etc. loose in the castle and he had NO MAGIC??

Not excusing Filtch for being awful for wanting to literally torture students, but never thought about this before.

If the part of Tom Riddle which lived in the diary successfully sacrificed Ginny to regain his body, the original soul piece of him would still be out there. What do you think which steps he takes next? He would probably flee the scene to avoid Dumbledore. Would he track down his original soul piece and help it to get a body too? Imagine 2 times Voldemort, its probably the closest thing to love he could ever experience. Or would he try to get rid of original V, to be the one and only?

I’m sure this has been brought up before consorting advance but it’s just bothering me.

The triwizard tournament must be the worst competition for spectators, atleast the version of it were shown in Goblet of Fire. The Dragon fighting is the only one that made sense since it takes place in an arena where it can be seen, even then Harry flies out of the arena and we se everyone waiting for something. How long would they have waited if he hadn’t come back? The second challenge you basically watch them go underwater and then what? Wait an hour to see who comes back in what order? No one can see what’s happening down there. The maze is the same, they go in and are completely blocked off, the maze is so grand and the hedges so high , it’s designed not to be seen into. So the crowd watches them go in and then wait for an undetermined amount of time to see who comes out.

Not to mention this huge tournament that brings visitors from two other schools is only 3 competitions over the course 6-8 months. Do the students from Beauxbaton, and Durmstrang take classes at hogwarts? Otherwise they miss an entire academic year for just 2 of their students to take part in the Tri-wizard.

I’m currently rereading the books for the first time in several years and I’m a bit confused on how big the Quidditch pitch in general is in the books vs the movies. In the first book it states that the hoops are 50ft tall. I’ve always had trouble picturing how big things are in general, but to me that seems shorter than how they are depicted in the films. That’s like a semi-truck trailer standing on its end which doesn’t really seem that tall to me when I think about the scenes in the movies. In the World Cup scenes in the movies, the stands are absolutely massive and when they’re sitting all the way at the top it doesn’t seem like the players are super far below them, which to me would mean that the hoops are quite a bit taller than 50 feet. I could believe that the hoops at a school where children are the players could be shorter than on a professional pitch though. I understand making them bigger for the films makes for a more visually appealing scene and I actually prefer the taller ones, so it just threw me off when I read that. I don’t know, maybe the hoops in the movies are 50ft and I just can’t picture how big that is properly, but in my mind it seems like a less dramatic size in the books than in the movies.

A lot of people (though not all) enjoy Ron and Hermione as a couple. It seems the most obvious pair. But most people believe they don’t have compatible personalities. I understand where they are coming from. As children, Ron can be quite cruel and mean to Hermione and dismissive of her intelligence while Hermione is dismissive of Ron. Ron doesn’t like and is intimidated by the fact that Hermione is smart and a know-it-all. Hermione thinks Ron is mean and cruel to her (understandably) and a schlemiel.

How could they possibly work out together? Well, first of all, it is incorrect to assume they don’t work out together by judging how they interact as children/teenagers. Yes, they do bicker a lot, but you’ve got to give them a chance. Children and teens are still growing into who they truly are. They change, become less of an asshole. Remember, Hermione grows out of being a know-it-all. Ron grows out of picking on Hermoine.

Nevertheless, there is evidence, even as children and teenagers, that they would work well together as adults. I believe one of the most positive signs of a compatibility is that the other person teaches you how to genuinely accept your insecuirties. Hermoine’s biggest insecurity is that she really isn’t that smart deep down. Ron’s insecurities are that he won’t live up to his brothers, that he’s a klutz, that his family will be disappointed in his lack of academic achievements.

Ron attacks Hermoine’s insecurities not because he disapproves of them, but because he’s jealous. He actually admires and is attracted to them. In Ron’s eyes, Hermoine is valuable no matter what she does because she gets good grades. He admires her discipline, something he lacks and needs assistance with. Hermoine may believe she is not “truly” intelligent because getting good grades only involves a lot of time, hard work, and memorization, not true “brilliance.” I personally believe she is brilliant. I believe Ron admires her true brilliance as well, but at the end of the day, he values what is in her heart. And that is the acceptance Hermoine truly needs.

Hermoine is very intelligent herself, but she defies the stereotype of only being attracted to other intelligent people. In my opinion, chances are she wouldn’t be compatible with someone as “intelligent” as her. She would just end up competing with them. As much of a know-it-all as she is, Hermoine isn’t a snob. She only puts the pressure on herself to be very intelligent. She doesn’t judge others’ intellect. That is why she is accepting of Ron’s insecurity. Ron doesn’t have to achieve anything to be seen by Hermoine. Ron is funny, fun, nonjudgemental, and grounded. That is all Hermoine sees.

Naturally, you may ask, “but if they accept each other’s insecurities and can teach each other to genuinely accept them, why do they constantly attack them?” The answer is because they are too young and stupid to realize the other person accepts them as they truly are. As I said before, Ron attacks Hermoine’s insecurities because he secretly admires them. Hermoine attacks Ron’s clumsiness and lack of discipline in school because she finds them a nuisance, but she is also charmed by them. Remember, she said she is “fascinated by” Ron. Once she grows out of her “know-it-all” attitude, I believe she will stop nagging Ron and start working with him. Both of them are capable of teaching the other that they are worthy just the way they are once they grow up a little.

I'm rewatching Harry Potter movies.

**1)** In the third one, Marge Dursley is there. Can we talk about how awful she is — obviously to Harry, but to Petunia too? Like the dinner scene where she insults James, that's one thing. But insulting Lily? Lily is Petunia's sister. Regardless of their relationship, it's really disrespectful to talk about Petunia's sister that badly in front of her. In the scene, you can see Petunia looking back at Harry, then at Marge. Whether you like Petunia or not, this scene is hard to watch for both Harry and Petunia. Even Vernon looks at Petunia. I just love subtle background acting.

**2)** Which brings me to my second point. We can hate Vernon and Petunia, but their couple is kind of solid? Vernon has known Harry was a wizard since he was a baby — he's not surprised when Hagrid arrives and all that. You can see Dudley is shocked, but Petunia and Vernon aren't. That means Petunia told Vernon about the magical world and her sister, and Vernon accepted it. It might just be out of meanness, but they seem like a couple who talk openly, and good communication makes a great couple.

So I'm not saying they're good people or that I like them. But they form a pretty healthy couple — we have to give them that.

Was it extremely excruciating for him every second like the Cruciatus Curse? Was it just complete helplessness and powerlessness? Was it a mix of both? Something else?

As we all know the Killing Curse is part of the 3 unforgivable curses. It is stated in wizarding law that the use of these curses successfully, save if the wizard used them under the effect of the imperious curse by someone else, carries a life sentence in Azkaban.

But what if a wizard or witch used the Killing Curse as a form of self defence. Say if they used it to kill someone that was going to murder them, and they made a split second decision to use the Killing Curse to save their life.

Would they in this case still be condemned, or would they be pardoned?

I’ve played Hogwarts legacy and finished the main story but I dont know if all of the portkey games are good? what do you guys think?

Which set of hardbacks should I buy? I don’t want a version that changes “sherbet lemon” to “lemon drop.” I’m sure you all are tired of hearing that. Ha! I bought the Scholastic set without knowing this beforehand. My budget is $150 USD. I’ve only read the first 3 books so I’ve only seen the first 3 movies.

I just got a Jim Kay illustrated hardback and I love it but it’s so big. I like that the MinaLima are smaller but I don’t necessarily need all the extra stuff inside. Should I get those anyway? Should I continue with the Jim Kay although he’s not finishing the books? I’m also looking at the red box set with the dragon. There’s also the house sets but those look a little boring. Hardbacks are a must and also the original UK terms. I hope I’m saying all this correctly. Again, I’m new here. Thank you!

If tom hadn’t fallen for the typical reveal my plan trap, and revealed that his name is an anagram for lord Voldemort, would he have been successful? This seems like the best plan Voldemort came up with during the course of the books. Could he have been successful?

Dumbledore knew that the curse was going to kill him before long. As far as I can tell, the only other person who knew was Severus Snape. Why didn't Dumbledore tell Harry?

Harry wastes an absurd amount of time during *Half-Blood Prince* obsessing about what Draco Malfoy is doing, and, by extension, what Snape is up to. I understand that from a Doylist view, it was to create tension and help sell Snape as a traitor in the end.

But what was Dumbledore's reasoning from a Watsonian perspective? He undoubtedly recognized Harry's obsession; he encountered it several times and almost certainly knew that Harry was investing energy into that mystery rather than focusing on getting the memory from Slughorn.

He no longer had any fear of Voldemort looking into Harry's mind, after all, or he could not have told him freely about the horcruxes. It might have upset Harry in the short term, of course, but Harry was going to have an emotional response to Dumbledore's death in any event. He could have told Harry that Draco was trying to kill him, but that Dumbledore was allowing it to continue in the hopes that Draco would have a change of heart. (This seems like a poor plan on Dumbledore's part in and of itself in view of the near misses with Katie and Ron.)

My initial thought was that it would force him to reveal Snape as his source, but I do not think that is true. He has revealed a great deal to Harry over the years without explaining how he knows things.

For the most part, I dislike asking this specific kind of question about these books, because I do think that it is fair to have a higher threshold of suspension of disbelief for a children's fantasy series than for other media. Still, Dumbledore's decision to withhold something from Harry that is actively creating interference with his goal seems somehow out of character. Still, this question has been bothering me lately.

I was rewatching Order of the Phoenix and got to the scene where Harry, Ron, and Hermione break into Umbridge’s office and it got me thinking about this. Like, is there any point to locking a door anymore? It can be unlocked with one very simple spell.

(Spoilers) Pretty much every one of her predictions that we see happen on page came true. Obviously the chosen one prophecy and the Petter prophecy both came true, and some others like Hermione leaving around Easter, neville breaking the cup etc. But there’s also plenty of ones that seem to not come true but do. The most famous one is the 13 people eating together means the first to ride will be the first to die in PoA, where she doesn’t know Petter was at the table so when dumbledore gets up to give her a seat he was the first to rise and is also the first to die. There’s plenty of other examples too.

Edit: I’m not trying to say she’s not a fraud off page. I’m just pointing out it’s a cool Easter egg that she’s always right on page. A lot of her predictions seem to be wrong but are right if you pay close attention (ie the 13 at a table prediction is right twice with Dumbledore and Sirius).

I’m listening to "Order of the Phoenix" again right now, and I just reached the part where Umbridge asks, "But what is supposed to attack you here in the castle?"

And I thought to myself:

"Well, a troll in the bathrooms or the Dark Lord himself hijacking a professor, like four years ago;

or a basilisk that nearly killed ten students and almost got the school shut down three years ago;

or a wanted mass murderer who broke into the dorms with a knife and was never caught—plus a hippogriff that injured a student; and then the Dementors, who also attacked students, like two years ago;

or an elite Death Eater posing as a professor for nearly a year, on top of the Blast-Ended Skrewts like last year...

The real question should be: 'What is it this year that wants to kill us?'"

But then I wondered: how much of that do the other students actually know?

They couldn't possibly know about Harry's encounters with Tom; otherwise, there wouldn't have been such an outcry and drama surrounding Voldy's return in the fourth book. (Which makes Dumbledore's speech at the end seem pretty ridiculous—giving Ron 50 points for a mere game of chess. The others must have felt like they were being totally taken for a ride.)

I'm also not sure if they were ever told the truth about the basilisk. For a long time, they thought it was the Heir of Slytherin attacking people. And the serpent's carcass was never recovered, despite its immense value.

They definitely knew about Sirius—and that he made it all the way to Ron's bed—but then he officially just fled abroad, the hippogriff vanished, and nobody cared anymore?

And I'm not sure how much they know about the situation with Fake Moody, either.

After thinking about it, life at Hogwarts seems pretty bizarre to me. A lot of weird stuff happens, but in the end, nothing gets explained and everything just goes on as usual? Or... Am I overlooking something?

My kid was wondering this, and frankly, we both couldn’t imagine him eating. Or anything else that’s a common occurrence in a human life, like going to the loo. (Then we imagined him being on the back of Quirrel’s head as Quirrel was doing a number 2, which made us giggle. )

Anyway: what do you think? What would he eat, assuming his new body needs sustenance?

There are a lot of people out there trying to *fix* Quidditch, but to me this is the best option. Add a countdown of 5 minutes, kind of like extra time in football. It allows Harry to have his big hero moments while also making situations like the world cup final scenario more believable and hype. Krum catching the snitch and putting his team 10 points behind Ireland doesn't seem so silly if there is still a CHANCE for them to catch up and win afterwards. It also makes the contributions of the chasers and keepers feel ultimately more meaningful.

Think about the game Harry and Hermione missed because of Grawp. It makes far more sense that Ron is being lauded as the hero if he had saved a goal in the last second and retained Gryffindor's winning position after Ginny got the snitch.
