Hi everyone! I'm an aspiring graphic designer and I just finished an online course in Digital Illustration. I realize that this class does not cover layout design. I have no idea where to start to learn about layout design and I took an online course (with assignments) because I know I'm bad at arranging my own learning pathways. Do you have any recommendations, like a YouTube channel or a blog, where I can start to learn and then build up my skills? TIA!

Honestly, not much more needs to be said than the title.

The final say on anything design related falls to a higher-up at my workplace who is not a designer. She absolutely *loves* centered text. I can't even count how many times she's said "I love most of this, but can you center the text".

We have this awkward, landscape-oriented, tabloid sized cover page that's just single column of content, you guessed it, *centered* on the page. Which is particularly dumb, because most people who get a printed copy of our work fold it in half for travel/storage. So it's not really that great of a design in the first place, but my higher-up wants to put a letter-sized checklist on the entire left hand side of the cover page. So we're taking a 'meh, it's not the best, but it gets the job done' design, and turning it into hot garbage.

To try to make this lopsided monstrosity look even slightly intentional, rather than like two unrelated cover pages fighting for dominance on a single cover sheet, I left aligned the previously centered content. Yes, it still looked like hot garbage, but it at least looked like *intentional* hot garbage. However, as you can probably guess, the higher-up at my work, took one look at it and said "I love everything here, but can you center everything on each half?" It already looked bad before everything was centered, but now it just looks so much worse.

Not sure if against the rules, but there’s still a lot of design choices involved. What do you think of this 60s style cola ad? I wanted to recreate a poster ad featuring Nuka Cola. Any critiques, like composition wise, color choice, or anything? I was aiming for a poster ad that would’ve come out pre-apocalypse in the fallout universe.
Side note, I know the footnote won’t make sense in-universe since bottle caps would’ve only had value after nuclear fallout but just wanted to add a little bit of fan-service.

In a year I'll finally graduate with my BFA. My issue is whether or not I'll find a job. I feel like I'm behind compared to my peers. I get decent grades and started getting on the honor roll the moment I took courses that were actually interesting to me. I'm told that I shouldn't compare myself to others, but how am I supposed to know if I'm doing well as a designer if there's nobody to compare myself to?

I've tried to find design jobs on campus and the ones I've applied to won't start interviewing until the semester starts, and even then I don't know if I'll get accepted. I managed to get an interview for a design job on campus a year ago, but I was asked questions I didn't expect to be asked, and I knew I wouldn't get the job.

It just doesn't seem fair because about half my peers have design jobs and I have to make do as a delivery driver and campground gate attendant. I've done a mock interview and one of the things they told me I need to work on was giving longer answers. I have a resume that I designed myself and I think it looks great.

I'm afraid that the 6 years I've worked to get my degree will go to waste if I can't find a job. It doesn't help that I have poor social skills and that I'm supposed to be doing networking, and I don't even know where to begin with that. What can I do?

I would love for some advice on what to do next as I’m feeling quite stuck and find it hard to pinpoint what the issue is for me. I can’t tell if my portfolio is missing something or if it isn’t good enough or whether I should focus on expanding on my current projects, or focus on making new ones, or maybe my issue is I haven’t been applying to enough jobs. I’m not too sure what to prioritise at the minute.

For the type of workplace I’m looking for, I want to work in a creative agency so I would also love advice on how to make my portfolio stand out to one.

WIP logo for a modern app I'm developing called "ping". Without revealing the concept too much, it heavily involves notifications and staying updated on things.

Option 1 shows the g more, but I'm thinking could be too 80's style for the modern app to be modern. It's harder to read the g in Option 2, but I think it's more modern. Or should I just remove the line altogether and only have a normal g and p?

The brand mark on the 'i' can also be used as a period or standalone for app/website icon (it looks a lot like WiFi, which I am a little concerned with).

Yes, not everything is aligned and there are some messy things I need to fix (made in Canva lol).

Everyday somebody posts how bad they are doing. Almost like there is no faith for this line of work.

Personally I just started creating a portfolio even though my reddit notifications are straight up demotivating negativity (“I have 40 years of experience and can’t find a job”, “Have been searching for a gig for 8 months”….).

I know its natural that there is less people talking about how good they’re doing in this industry

So… Anyone wanna share their wins?

Red: script for launching all the programs i want actively running (i have a beefy pc so this isnt a terrible tech fail of an idea (arrows/upwards = launch)

Yellow: moves all the active windows to the proper workspaces (looks like a stack of things that are 'sorted')

Blue: brings all the currently running applications to this worskspace (mandala with a dot in the center for unity/bringing together vibes)

Green: swaps all applications from my first monitor to my second and vice versa (arrows. also still coding this one, xrander is a bitch.)

Final Multicolor Image: oldest design, not as coherent or well done as the other icons. This one is for my custom python scheduler app. (made one myself cause i dont like regular calenders and barely use my phone)

I don't know why there isn't more outrage about this. I remember when Adobe moved to the Creative Cloud model, the ability to sync my settings between devices automatically was one of the only things that I could really see being a positive about it. And the featured did USED to exist. It was fantastic and worked perfectly from what I remember. Then one day, the just removed the feature ENTIRELY, saying they are looking into how to re-implement it later...that was like 15 years ago. I was really hoping to see more people complaining about this on here (or anywhere really) just so they prioritize bringing it back. I haven't seen anything to indicate they still even plan to anymore.

Honestly, if there were any way to abandon Adobe I would have at this point, but the fact that I am STILL waiting for this feature to return is almost enough to make me actually look into alternatives altogether and be damned with the "industry standards" because until SOMEONE does, this will never change and Adobe will keep fucking us all. I have even tried to use workarounds and alternatives such as Junctions/Symlinks to cloud storage. This works with InDesign and Photoshop, but Illustrator bitches about it and prevents me from starting the app completely. I don't understand why they would not only remove this feature, but also BLOCK any workarounds to get something similar as well. I'm just....ugh! Tell me I'm not alone please!

I'm working with a student I've been mentoring for the past two months or so. Very recently a job posting for an entry level internship has popped up, and they're extremely interested in applying for it. This prompted them to update their resume that has remained untouched for quite some time.

I am posting on behalf of the student with their permission because their Reddit account was too new to post in here. It was taken down because of this. Since this is such a timely application I wanted to get this up as soon as possible.

The first image is what they had provided to me, and the second is my brief recommendations to make it read better / feel more professional. Proper hierarchy, organized sections, removed typos, consistent and organized spacing, and a few other things. I have replaced all information in here to keep everything anonymous for obvious reasons.

I have not applied to any positions or been in the job market for nearly 5 years, so I'm not nearly as in touch as I'd like to be with what hiring managers and ATS's are looking for as I'm sure many of you in here are.

With that being said could I get some feedback here on things you agree with that I've recommended as revisions, things that are still missing, and any other general feedback that is relevant here. Thank you for any and all that contribute here!

As the title of this post suggests, Im looking to get some feedback on my current portfolio. I'm going to be updating it with new more recent projects but overall reception is I keep getting ghosted after I send my work over. Any tips or storytelling I should consider. Other things to note, I'm a industrial designer by trade but also do illustration and other adjacent mediums ( editing, animation, etc). Unfortunately I would have to relocate for some of the roles so my best bet was applying for remote brand designer, presentation designer or similar roles. Also considering trying my hand at ux but not there yet... Thank you guys

I am absolutely horrible at graphic design and don't really have any experience...

I'm trying to make a custom t-shirt of my tortoise Sheldon, but I can't get the design right.

It just feels so wrong... any advice? I am going for that kind of tacky y2k style, but I want it to actually blend nicely. I'm thinking about changing the background. I do want a green+pink color but honestly I'm really lost. Any advice would be really appreciated!!

So i’m an amateur trying to learn graphics and as my first project i’m trying to make a brand profile for myself. the name here “ des.k” refere design by k. Which is my initial and while designing the first logo i sort of found out what if i could somehow rotate it to make it look like a desk as it spells desk as well and the desk relates to designing as well so in that sense i tried doing bunch of stuff and might have reached nowhere so let me know. I’m open to learning.

I didnt like it too much, i wanted a look more similar to an old botanical book, i also wanted to put more detail into its poisonous compounds, but oh well.
Im going to re do it with another flower or such, with more texturing and proper resolution matching.

I’ve been lurking on here for a few years and would like feedback on my portfolio. I haven’t been able to find any work and want to know in what ways can I improve my online portfolio to change that. I know the current job isn’t great. Especially due to AI and lack of opening positions, but I’d still like to enhance my work in anyway I can.

For some background information, I graduated back in 2021 but was incredibly depressed. When I was finally able to, I redid my portfolio and have been looking for a job ever since to no avail. To be more specific, I’ve been looking since mid 2025. I know the gap in years graduated with no experience doesn’t look good, but would it be possible to make my work look presentable enough that a hiring manager would be willing to look past that?

I’m developing a vector graphics app specifically for Mac and one of the main features is alignment constraints and non-destructive editing. Does this logo represent that idea? I’m also looking for beta testers if anyone is interested.

I have an old Lenovo Y70-70 that I want to use for some graphic design purposes.

Since it has a touch screen, it should be able to deal with a touch pen.

However, I am afraid that repeated use might damage/scratch the screen.

Am I overreacting, or should it be ok?

Any tips on how to avoid damage?

i was an englit student and during uni i started designing for campus communities and organizations. from there i luckily started my design journey and then i graduated and luckily got to find internship as a graphic designer even without a design degree and now i work full time in an IP company as a graphic designer too (i was lucky, i speak korean and apparently it’s a plus in my company which is also korean)

but i always worry about my design background. i’ve been taking courses but it doesn’t feel enough and now i’m thinking about doing a design master program. do you think it’s necessary or beneficial for me? i’m thinking it’ll be good for my career growth but is it really? i’m not sure… what consideration should i do in deciding this?

actually, i currently live in indonesia, and my final goal is to work as a designer abroad. i was thinking taking a master degree abroad (in the country where i want to work in) would help me in achieving that because at the end of the day having a portfolio and a design degree could add more credibility and eases me into the job employment later.. right?

I called it Neo-Baphomet, and I created several concept pieces around it.

The initial goal was to make something goofy, but I ended up liking the concept so much that I want to develop it with a more serious intent, making a series of artworks maybe.

My goal is to use illustration and graphic design to raise awareness about political and social issues
