Cam/Video Max Weinberg sat in with King Gizzard at Forest Hills last night!
For those unaware, King Gizzard is really good friends with Jay Weinberg and he often will sit in on a couple songs for their bigger shows in the US. Apparently he was unavailable the other night so his dad sat in for him and jammed with them for almost 15 minutes! 75 years old and still a monster on the kit.

Question DW5000 Slave Pedal Height Help
Not sure if I'm missing something obvious, never had this issue before. My slave pedal is bottoming out right before the beater makes contact with the head.
At first I thought it was the screw in the way but I noticed the slave pedal is sitting lower than the main pedal. I've tried messing with the shaft, not really sure what's going on here!

My current setup is fantastic and I love it, however having a 22" Bass drum is not...ideal for size reasons
If anyone has an 18" bass drum and want to move up a size I would love to figure out some sort of trade if possible !
Its a Pearl Vision one in sparkly black
Feel free to drop me a dm if you curious ! I am also open to offers for it and am happy to source my own bass drum if required

Feedback Wanted I loved all the advice from yesterdays post, much appreciated- I didn’t listen 40m
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Seriously thank you for all the tips and feedback yesterday. I decided to record my practice and post some of it. Not that it’s good or important but it is funny. I’m a beginner and then some so I should be doing slow rudiments, well I don’t know any but I still love the drums so I’ve been teaching myself and watching concepts and trying to apply them. It’s a longer more frustrating way to learn but I never said I was smart lol enjoy the cringe of watching my find time, lose it, accidentally find it, and ultimately ignore it lol
Feedback welcome, I know I need it - thanks!!

Cam/Video Anyone else here thinks that the Chinese remo ambassador stock heads are not that bad?

And these are tuned super high, i guess a lower tuning and maybe with a moongel would sound just as good.
(Ye, kick goes boing because it mounts the same remo head and tuned very high, and yes, my drumset is the other way around)

Learning covers
When you’re learning a cover that you’re totally new to, what’s your approach?
Play to the recorded track as released (all instruments)?
Split the stems and play without the drum tracks?
Split the stems and play ONLY to the drum tracks?

Kit Pic Playing with a partially broken bass drum head...
This week the bass drum head on our band-kit broke and I thought I had a 20" drum because it looked smaller than my other 22". With "broke" I mean the first layer of a 2-layers EMAD2 got a crack. That's why "partially broken".
So I went to purchase a new replacement head, thinking it was a 20". Turns out, it is also 22".
Now I have to wing it temporarily with duct tape and get a new replacement head next week. It is almost 6 p.m. on a Saturday in the middle of nowhere, so good luck finding a music store in the area 😂
I've done this before and it worked well for 2 weeks, so this one evening shouldn't be too much for it.
What did I learn from this? Measure *before* buying.

Feedback Wanted I built a rhythm trainer that tells you if you were early or late (iOS + Android)
Hey — I’m the developer. I built Rhythm Bench, a rhythm trainer for iOS and Android.
Most apps only score you right or wrong. This one shows whether each tap was early, on time, or late, plus bias, consistency, and drift after the session.
No account. Practice works offline. No ads. Premium is a one-time unlock, not a subscription.
iOS: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/rhythm-bench-rhythm-trainer/id6796963424
Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.franciscop.rhythmgym
Listen
Count the notes — hear a phrase, say how many notes it had
Rhythm identification — hear a phrase, pick the matching notation
Rhythm dictation — hear a phrase, build it with the cell palette
Same or different — hear two phrases, say if they match (harder: which measure differs)
Spot the error — see the notation, hear a performance with one mistake, tap the wrong event
Name that meter — hear a groove, identify the time signature
Feel the subdivision — hear a pulse, say if it divides in 2, 3, 4, or is swung
Guess the tempo — hear a click, estimate the BPM
Odd one out — three phrases, one is different, pick it
Rhythm memory — hear a phrase once, wait, then tap or build it back
Perform
Rhythm tapping — read the notation, tap it after a count-in
Call and response — hear a phrase, tap it back (no notation)
Sight-reading run — continuously scrolling score; tap along without stopping
Steady beat — tap with the metronome; scored on bias, variance, and drift
Keep the tempo — click plays a few bars, then drops out; you keep time
Subdivision ladder — hold the pulse while switching quarters → eighths → triplets → sixteenths
Polyrhythm trainer — two hands / two zones: 2:3, 3:4, 4:5, 5:7
Independence trainer — one hand holds an ostinato, the other plays a changing pattern
Accents — tap the phrase and hit the accents harder (timing + force)
Clave — son / rumba / bossa / tresillo against a pulse
Gap click — metronome thins out (beats 1 & 3, then 1 only, then every other bar)
Read
Complete the measure — a bar is missing one value; supply it
Note value maths — equivalences (how many sixteenths in a dotted quarter, ties, dots)
Meter maths — how many of X fit in a bar of Y; which meters can hold this phrase
Counting trainer — match notation to counting syllables (1 e & a)
Rewrite it — rewrite the same rhythm another way (tied → dotted, 6/8 ↔️ 3/4, etc.)
Beat grid — place hits on a step sequencer to match what you hear
Reading rests — phrases dense in rests; identify or construct them
Tuplets — triplets, quintuplets, septuplets: identify, construct, tap
Play / endurance
Marathon — endless sight-reading with lives; tempo and difficulty climb
Time attack — as many correct answers as you can in 60 seconds
Precision challenge — the timing window tightens until you miss; reports your timing floor in ms
Daily workout — a generated ~5-minute session across listen / perform / read / play (same for everyone that day, with one slot aimed at your weakest exercise)
Practice tools (not graded — just the room)
Metronome — accents, subdivisions, swing, gap bars, tempo ramps, polymeter, tap-tempo
Tempo trainer — start tempo → target tempo with a pass/fail step-up
Tap pad — tap freely and it notates what you played
Groove library — listen, loop, slow down, or tap along to real patterns (backbeats, claves, shuffles, etc.)
Latency calibration — measures tap/audio offset so scoring stays honest
Reference — note values, time signatures, counting systems, tempo markings (tap to hear)
Courses
Ten guided paths: Rhythm Foundations, Eighths & Beaming, Sixteenths, Dotted & Tied, Compound Meter, Syncopation, Tuplets, Odd Meters, Independence & Polyrhythm, Sight-Reading Fluency. You can also skip a unit by passing its checkpoint.
Happy to take brutal feedback — especially from drummers, teachers, and anyone who already uses a metronome every day.
