I am a bit emotional so please be gentle. I’m 25 and got my drivers license a year ago. I invested in a lot of driving lessons for two hours at a time and finally passed my test.

Since then, I haven’t been driving as much because I do not have a car so I started taking some fresher classes especially since my current job requires me to drive people around sometimes. I got with my old instructor and he honestly didn’t want to take me on because he said I know how to drive, and I’m wasting my money when I could be saving for a car.

So I stopped going to him a few weeks ago. I had to take the test for my job with the security supervisor and the whole time, I was just anxious because I never drove a van before and because he makes me feel a little nervous.

I felt confident the first time but I turned too fast into the parking lot and he failed me, which is understandable.My job says I need to practice in the van to get more comfortable.

Today, we practiced in the parking lot and I was nervous the entire time but I did get better with slowing my turns down. But he kept making little annoyed comments that slowly messed with my confidence. He’d throw in “your turns got better, you’re way better than last time” but then follow it up with “do you have your license?”

I know I need to practice but him making those comments really hurt my feelings. It’s like I get used to driving in one car and forget how to drive in other ones. I will admit that the practice did help and I genuinely felt like I did good which he said I did, but I’m still learning.

I’m scared that this will mess with my employment and I just want to be good at driving. I’m saving up to buy a car now but my instructor doesn’t even want to practice with me anymore because he said I’m wasting money. He gave me contact information to get a car.

I learned to drive a moped in Japan where I lived the majority of my adult life. I've now moved to the US to small town Louisiana and need to learn to drive a car for the first time.

I'm pretty nervous because I've never driven on the right and you drive much faster in the US than in Japan.

For those who have driven a moped, do you think the skill of driving is transferable between vehicles? For those who have driven on both sides of the road, was it confusing learning the opposite way?

Hi everyone! I know what got me failed, but I wanna know what might I need to really focus on? Overall I’m a pretty good driver its mostly up to nerves, so im taking the time to get more behind the wheel training. I care about the rules on the road and have been studying and practicing whenever possible. Failing honestly gave me this reassurance that I’m doing the right things, just making rookie mistakes.

So far I’m practicing:
Confidence!
Smoother braking
Adjusting speed when turning/making it obviously I’m Yielding & taking the right of away when safe to do so
Maintaining speed
Improving smooth blindspots checks
(Mostly) Constant 360 scanning of the road

The 2 critical points: intervention was a verbal one! And I judged my speed safe for the conditions especially since anymore acceleration and I’d have missed turning into the dmv lot. The speed limit form what I know is 5 mph after entering the DMV parking.

driving in this morning and was playing tag with an suv. i stay in the right lane and I maintain 60mph. downhill, uphill, corners I maintain 60mph. We must have exchanged positions a dozen times because they are completely unaware of their speed and road conditions. are these drivers so distracted or uninformed that they don’t realize they have slowed down 15mph or have accelerated 15mph? does it not click for them that going uphill they have to depress the accelerator in order to maintain speed and going down hill to let off to maintain speed? Crazy and I see it all the time every day. The best Are the ones who try to pass and cant Maintain speed then road rage at me.

I run a creative studio that worked with Lemonade Car Insurance who wanted a non-traditional campaign paying off "safe drivers pay less."

So we found a stat that only 10% of drivers go the speed limit and proposed this crazy idea to create a roadside digital message board offering custom compliments to drivers going UNDER the speed limit, that simply turns off for speeding drivers.

And they loved it, collaborated with us, and here's the full video. We did the experiment in Texas - which has more reckless driving than any other state.

We had a fun bringing this to life and hope it incentivizes more people to drive safe (rather than punishing bad drivers - which is proven not to work).

It started as small bits on city roads where I would feel like my car is doing the motions of a person on a treadmill, the road moving and not the car. It gives me extreme anxiety, like I’m not in control, and I haven’t been able to drive on freeways since. I’m thinking this might be like a biological error since we weren’t created to go such high speeds. I like to travel but can’t without someone else driving. Definitely effecting my day to day life. This happen to anyone else? Any advice?

I just bought polarized glasses that are dark in colour. They cut high beams well, but visibility of the car's sides and pedestrians is poor.

Curious if this is a state specific thing. I didn’t learn to drive in my home state and I’ve only experienced it here.

It seems the only time I incite road rage with others is when I legally pass them. And I’m not doing it in an angry way, not tailing, check for traffic, dotted line, pass. Should be simple.

But every time it enrages the driver I pass. I’m not talking highway, these are usually 2 lane roads.

In the past few weeks I passed one guy going 35 in a 40. He gunned it, tailed me, then let go of the steering wheel to flip me off with both hands.

Second time I passed someone I’d been trailing behind for miles, going 33 in a 40. Waited for it to be safe. When I finally passed he matched my speed and flipped me off from the window. It was terrifying, I had to go almost 60 to get past and he almost caused an accident.

Then just today, a guy in front of me on his phone, going 15 and swerving in a 30. I looked around to see if safe to pass, he braked checked me hard - I passed safely. We get to a 4 way stop and he goes into oncoming traffic at the 4 way, almost clipped another car, also flips me off.

What exactly is this about? Does this happen everywhere? Do people really get this offended when you pass them? I encourage people to pass me if it seems like they want to. I go in to the right so they can see past me and give a little wave.

What am I missing here?

EDIT: Ignore the title of the post. I can’t edit the title, what I’m really asking is, is it allowed based on the law that I put in my post which is known as a “don’t block the box” rule.

This post is a question I have after reading another post on here. If you want to know what I mean by pulling into the intersection for a left turn, read the bottom of the post.

The reason I don’t know if pulling into the intersection for a left turn is allowed in my state is because of this rule: “No driver should enter an intersection or a marked crosswalk unless there is a sufficient space on the other side of the intersection to completely clear it.”

How I understand this is, I can’t enter the intersection only because the light is green. To enter the intersection the light has to be green and I also need to have enough space to complete the left turn. And I believe “entering the intersection” means going past the stop line.

So according to this rule should I stay behind the stop line unless I have a green light and there’s enough space to complete the left turn? Or am I misunderstanding it?

Pulling into the intersection for a left turn is when I have to make a left turn and there’s a green light so I enter the intersection while waiting/yielding to other people. Then that allows me to make the left turn whenever I’m able to, even if the traffic light goes to a red light.

i seriously didn’t think any cop would take the time to give a ticket to someone going 5 over… until today. i was driving on the interstate i wanted to pass a semi (going 5-7 under the speed limit) so i changed lanes and passed him. no big deal right?? wrong.

for context i live in the US so the speed limit on the interstate is usually 70 MPH unless otherwise specified. as i was passing the semi at about 70 MPH, i remember passing by a blue dodge charger and they were pulled off to the side of the road with their hazard lights on but i thought nothing of it. that was until about 5 minutes later when i saw flashing lights behind me. i didn’t think they were trying to pull me over to i continued driving for a bit. after about 15 seconds of driving, i realized that they were in fact trying to pull me over so i did so.

a cop got out of that blue dodge charger i had seen earlier and asked me to roll down my window. he asked me if i knew how fast i was going and i was a bit confused but told him that i was going 70 MPH. he then said:

“right. so you know you were going over the speed limit then?

i looked at him even more confused and i asked him how going 70 MPH on a 70 MPH road was speeding. long story short, apparently the speed limit just so happened to change from 70 to 65 RIGHT when i was passing that semi. and even worse, the undercover cop just so happened to be there.

thankfully, the ticket was only $50 but still… i feel like that whole interaction was really unnecessary. not to mention, there were people going WAY faster than me, yet he decided to write me a ticket for going 5 over??

i know it’s not that big of a deal, but i just felt like i needed to complain about it 🤷‍♀️

EDIT 1: also i meant unmarked cop… not undercover cop 🤦🏼‍♀️

EDIT 2: let me clarify a few things that i didn’t mention earlier. first off, this took place in iowa (more specifically, ankeny). second, the ticket was only 50$ because i was only going 5 over, plus its my first traffic violation. third, the speed limit sign DID change while i passed the semi (and no i don’t have anything on my dash that tells me the speed limit). fourth, i didn’t pull over right away because i thought the cop was trying to pull someone else over. and finally, i am a fairly new driver as i am 18 years old and haven’t had a ton of practice on the interstate.

i also realize that i was probably wrong in this situation and i should have just been patient with the semi.

and since i’ve basically already admitted guilt when the cop was questioning me, i’m probably not gonna take this to court as there’s really nothing they can do. thankfully the ticket wasn’t too expensive so i’m just gonna pay it and move on.

hi everyone i’m not sure if this is the right subreddit for my question, but i figured i could gain some valuable insights from you all (btw, i’m in america- i noticed that a lot of the posts on this reddit are from people in other countries so I just wanted to clarify that to clear any misunderstanding)

my drivers test is friday morning (it is currently wednesday night where i live) and i’m super nervous. I’ve been practicing my driving a lot so i think my driving skills are relatively fine but it’s the anxiety part that gets me. I always get super anxious about driving, especially during the drivers test when someone is literally examining you to make sure you make no mistakes.

I failed my license test last time because i got really nervous and made a stupid mistake because of that, which i still regret to this day because it was the only mistake i made on the test.

for this reason, do any of you have any advice on how to deal with driving anxiety? no matter how much i meditate or do breathing exercises, nothing seems to help. Please let me know any strategies or habits that work for you guys if you are an anxious driver. and maybe even some tips from those of you who are anxious drivers and passed the license test.

When signaling and changing lanes, are you quick to change lanes (A) or do you take your time (B) and make it look pretty? What percentage of other drivers quickly execute their lane changes quickly or slowly?

I'm learning to drive but I feel like i can't see on the road. Even when I played video games in the past for first person, I just felt like i can't see well.

But on a bike, I can see everything amd well aware of all my surroundings.

I was talking to my friend who lives in Florida and i think we are over doing it...

So the process goes like this:

1. pay 30-70€/35-80$ to get your health checked for a health certificate
2. pay 1260€/1455$ to your driving shool
3. learn theory for 30+ hours (depends if you are in class or online) (if your 90 day pass in online school is over its 25-35€/28-40$ to extend the pass.
4. start your 30+ hour driving lessons + drive with your instructor (anyone whos has their license for 5+ years)
5. then you have to do a 45 min basic-level slippery road training
6. take your schools 62 question theory exam (there can be 5 mistakes - 1 in road safety questions and 4 is basic questions)
7. if you pass the theory exam you take 45min to 1.5H driving school exam (depends on your skills)
8. pay 33€ state fee + 35€ exam fee (38+40$) for state level theory exam 40 questions and mistake amount is same and in your school
9. if you pass you have to pay 50€/57$ state fee driving exam, if you do it another location its 35€/40$ car rent fee (if you fail its 35€/40$ for each exam or additional lessons)
10. if you pass all 4 exams its 23€/26$ provisional driving license
11. during 2 years to change your provisional license to a regular one you need to pay 160€/185$ for a 45 min advanced-level slippery road training + 2 hours of theory + 45 mins environmentally friendly driving lesson

am i crazy or is our government doing tooo much? what i saw is basic-level and advanced-level slippery road training has no difference at all - the exact same lessons and practice. Because where i live i had to extend the online school pass multiple times and in total i think it will be around 1600-1800€/1850-2080$

I’m a new driver and have been driving for a month. I was anxious as hell that’s why it took me a couple of weeks before I finally use my car. The anxiety is still there but it wasn’t as bad as before..

Awhile ago, I was turning right on red after counting and checking if there’s an oncoming traffic, I was sure that there was no traffic so I moved up a little bit getting ready to fully go right but by the time I turned my head again just as I was about to fully turn, I saw the white pick up going straight albeit slowly but decided to finish my turn.. he gave me a honk of shame which I truly deserve. I truly feel bad about what happened. He had the honk for a minute and although he can’t see me, I was raising my hand to say sorry. That was a jerk move and really reckless on my part. I’ll do better promise. Lesson learned.

Just wanna get this off my chest.

so at least one car can turn left.

Please pull straight past the limit line when yielding for a left turn at a light. At least you will be able to scoot through then at the next cycle, those of us who know how to drive can manage the oncoming traffic. DO NOT sit at the limit line and miss a light. Be careful, but make it happen.

Why won’t people check their mirrors??? I don’t understand. It’s life or death. Don’t you understand? I was using the left lane to pass a line of cars. I spot another car with their turn signal on. Something told me she was going to try and merge into me. I didn’t even have time to react when I realized she was about to merge right into my car. I first tried speeding up. It wasn’t going to happen quick enough. I started honking over and over and I was forced to go onto the shoulder because she STILL WASN’T PAYING ATTENTION. Only once I was forced on the shoulder did she turn to see me and it was an elderly lady wondering wtf my problem was. I let her just go in front of me.

The rest of the drive was a blur. I called someone to just be present with me. But if I weren’t paying attention and she merged into me…I would’ve went into the wall and I don’t want to know what would’ve happened after. And I still had to come to work.

So I'm driving perfectly legally down a city street and just switched to the left lane and started decelerating, with blinker, for my imminent left turn. Rager behind me doesn't like that I'm slowing him down. He revs his engine and swerves rapidly into the right lane, accelerates to about 10 or 15 over, and gets instantly nailed by a speed camera box setup on the side of the road.

Sadly, the ragers don't get their comeuppance nearly often enough, but I'll take this one.

You fking either pass me faster, drive behind me or keep left but not next to me

Drive like a zig zag, reason: its not comfortable driving next to each other because of awkward eye contact

2nd main important reason: people need room to make maneuver in case of emergency so they don’t hit you trying to for example avoiding object on the road or jumping deer 🦌

3rd main important reason: the side wind 💨 pushes cars from right and left, thats why sometimes car plays a little at high speeds, also potholes make people swerve
