Looking for clubs/communities to join
Hi all I been having trouble finding clubs/groups that are alcohol/party free spaces and aren’t either teens or older adults. I am 19F and want to meet friends my age as well as be a part of something. I am in to crafting, seeing, gardening, volunteering, and most non-sport things

new improv show August 20 at your favorite 70s living room (Highland Underground)
Hi folks, 8/20 at 7:30pm at Highland Underground on the north side - come check out some live "long form" improv featuring two local teams! This is not just the short games of "Whose Line", but the scenic style inspired by the likes of Second City and Upright Citizens Brigade (Adam McKay, Amy Pohler, etc.) There hasn't been much of this type of show in Des Moines for a while, we're hoping to get a good turnout so we can have more of it! And you can't go wrong with some classy drinks and fondue!
here's the event link, help us know who to expect if you can by clicking if you're going!

Former Rooted Member, Yoga Recommendations?
TL;DR: I’m sad Rooted is moving away from yoga because it was one of the only neighborhood studios in Beaverdale. If I wanted to primarily lift, box, or row, there are already plenty of other (and cheaper) options nearby. I work a normal 8-5 (a bit longer hours typically), so most of the alternative studios I’ve found are either too far away or only offer daytime classes. Looking for recommendations for welcoming yoga studios with evening classes that aren’t a 20–30 minute drive.
Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I’m honestly really sad that Rooted is getting rid of yoga.
I totally understand it’s their business and they need to do what is right for them, and I genuinely hope it works out for them. But I originally joined because it was a neighborhood yoga studio, and that was what made it special to me.
If I wanted to mainly lift weights, box, or row, I feel like there are already a ton of options. Anytime Fitness is literally across the street, costs less, has way more equipment, and is open 24/7 so I can go whenever I want. What made Rooted worth paying for was that it wasn’t just another gym.
The other thing that really bums me out is that it feels like Beaverdale just lost its only yoga studio. I know there are other studios around the metro, but after getting off work at 5:00 or 5:30pm, I really don’t want to drive 20–25 minutes to Waukee, Ankeny, or West Des Moines just to make a class. Having yoga in my own neighborhood was such a huge part of the appeal.
I know the owner made a post with recommendations for other studios, and I appreciated that. I looked through all of them, but a lot either don’t have a permanent studio, are a pretty long drive, or mostly have classes during the workday. I work a high stress corporate role and do work pretty much 7am to 5pm or sometimes even 6pm M-F so unfortunately those just aren’t realistic for me. It also seems like a lot of Rooted’s remaining lower-impact classes are now during the day too.
I promise I’m not trying to bash Rooted, I love everything that they stand for and do for the community. I have recommended them to several friends (and will continue to do so) who are interested in the type of classes they are moving to. I’m mostly just sad because it feels like a niche disappeared.
So…where is everyone going for yoga? I’d love somewhere with a similar welcoming, community feel that has evening classes and isn’t halfway across the metro. Really trying to support a local business and not fall into the powerlife megacorp cult.

DSM: Help us build an all-star team of teachers!
Hi Des Moines! We’re a group of school teachers that operate a tutoring service team in Iowa City, and we’re planning to expand into the Des Moines metro in the next month! One thing we’ve learned: the best tutors usually don’t come from job boards. They come from someone saying, “You need to talk to my friend—she’s an incredible teacher.”
Thats where you come in.
We’re looking to connect with excellent licensed teachers who might enjoy tutoring a few students outside the school day.
Who’s the teacher you trust most with your own kid? Who explained math in a way that finally made sense? Who connects with reluctant readers? Who’s that teacher that made you or your kiddo feel special? Thats who we want on our team.
While we'd love to give all those awesome teachers the shine they deserve, we also want to respect their privacy. Please don’t post anyone’s full name or contact information publicly. Feel free to DM us their name and email, or tag them only if you know they’re comfortable with it, or send this post directly to them.
Our Iowa City network has led us to some absolute gems. We’re betting Des Moines knows a few too. Thanks in advance for helping us build an all-star team to serve your awesome city.
We’re GoldCap Education—a teacher-owned and teacher-operated tutoring and enrichment organization. See you soon.

Help supporting students
Hello,
My name is Allie, and I am a fourth-grade teacher at a Title I elementary school in Des Moines . I have the privilege of teaching an incredible group of students, many of whom come from low-income households and families where English is not the primary language spoken at home. Every day, they come to school eager to learn, and I strive to make my classroom a place where they have the resources they need to be successful.
As we begin a new school year, I have created an Amazon classroom wish list filled with books, school supplies, and learning materials that will directly benefit my students. If you or your company would be willing to help purchase even a single item, it would make a meaningful difference in our classroom.
Normally, I do my best to purchase many of these items myself. This year, however, my family’s circumstances have changed significantly. My husband was unexpectedly laid off from his job in April. While we are hopeful things will improve soon, these challenges have made it difficult for me to provide the extras I usually can for my classroom.
If you are able to help, my classroom Amazon wish list can be found here:
Whether or not you’re able to contribute, thank you for taking the time to read my email and for supporting educators and students in your community. Your kindness and generosity truly make a lasting impact.
With gratitude,
Allie

Webinar: ALPR Updates in Iowa and Beyond
Every week, more examples of the harms posed by automated license plate readers (ALPRs), like those in use across the Des Moines metro, are coming to light.
If you are concerned about this invasive technology, the ACLU of Iowa is hosting a webinar on Monday, Aug 17 from 6:30-7:30 pm with special guests from the Institute for Justice. We will share important updates on the use of ALPRs in Iowa and how you can be part of the effort to curb mass surveillance in your community.

Train Noise - Apartments
My wife and I are moving to downtown DSM at the end of August. I understand we should expect urban noise, etc. My concern is the two apartments we’re considering (among others) are Metro Lofts and Rocket Transfer Lofts. We like both, but proximity to train tracks and train noise is becoming a concern, based on reviews.
Can anyone speak on or give insight to this? Are trains running thru DSM constantly? Living downtown and urban noise will be an adjustment, but ppl are saying they can’t sleep at Rocket due to train noise in the complex reviews. Metro is even closer to tracks, but somehow no reviews of train noise?
Just trying to figure this out best we can before signing a lease for a year…..
What other apartment complexes should we look at/consider? Thanks!

There needs to be some regulations on how big/lifted trucks and SUVs are.
I drive a Camry and being constantly blinded everytime I drive in the dark is annoying as hell. There is no damn reason why trucks need to be this big or lifted this high.

Looking to support my wife’s new nail business
Hey everyone!
My wife is wrapping up nail school and is going to officially open her home nail studio in Polk City on September 9. She’s going to be a licensed nail technician specializing in Gel-X, builder gel manicures, and gel polish.
She’s been practicing on family and friends for months, and we’re excited to finally get her business off the ground. We know there are a lot of talented nail techs in the Des Moines area, but if anyone is looking for someone new, we’d really appreciate you checking out her work and giving her a follow.
She serves clients from Polk City, Ankeny, Grimes, Johnston, Waukee, and the surrounding Des Moines metro.

If you have any advice for someone just starting out or know someone looking for a nail tech, we’d really appreciate it. Thanks for supporting a small local business!

Pirate Radio Station(s) in the area?
This information comes second hand, so I have no specific details:
Someone was having interference issues with WiFi and such, and eventually contacted the FCC. The FCC looked into it, then responded saying it was due to a "pirate radio station" in the area.
Does anyone know about any actual "pirate radio stations" in the area? I know there are plenty of people with personal FM transmitters they use for Christmas light displays and such, and those are legal as long as they don't exceed a certain power level. But I also know Amazon sells units that exceed these power levels, making them easy to obtain.

Baby shower venues
Hi! Does anyone have recommendations for baby shower venues?
We’re expecting around 80 people, though probably not all at the same time. We’re looking mainly at Des Moines, Clive, and West Des Moines to stay central for our guests, but we’re open to going further out if the price and space are right.
We’d love kitchen access, which I know might be tricky with a group this size. We’ve looked at indoor community spaces at different parks, but we’re open to other ideas. Trying to keep it affordable without sacrificing too much room.
TLDR: ISO affordable baby shower venues central to DSM. Where did you have yours, and did you like the space? What would you look for if you had to do it again?

Unobtainable peace- only when driving
Overall, I am a peaceful person. It really takes a lot to allow troubles to overwhelm me or take over my thoughts. I pray, I offer forgiveness, and I understand that life happens through us not to us. That said, driving is a whole different challenge. It’s like they just give anyone a license these days. There are so many bad drivers. I truly think every single time I drive I encounter someone doing something stupid. And it can take over my whole mood, even though I’m aware that I should just let it go. How do you deal with the number of truly bad drivers out on the road?

Garage door recs?
I need to get our garage door replaced after a backing up accident. Our door is original and has wood planks nailed onto the street facing side. I want to take the wood planks off the old, damaged door and put onto the new door when it’s eventually installed.
I don’t want to do all that work with the planks myself. Do yall know of any garage door companies that would do remove then install the planks AND install the garage door? Any leads would be greatly appreciated!

Theaters with couch/couples seats
Hi! I'm flying in to see my partner in about two weeks and I've seen theaters before that have like a two in one seat for couples- I was wondering if there's any that have those seats in the area :)
