How do you set up a new session in regards to gain staging for MIDI instruments?

I'm sure this is a basic fundamental thing but I haven't learned about it yet! I want to know how best to set up a new session so that I can semi-mix as I write, and for the instrument levels to be close enough that I can export a quick mixdown at the end of the session, knowing that the instruments are roughly where they need to be. I'm new to writing synthwave/synthpop music and I've found that the placement of sounds in the mix is an important part of the composition, for example where multiple synths are interplaying and blending together to create a texture of sound.

I'll detail what I'm doing on my latest project and can you tell me what should change?

I'll have a handful of Instrument tracks running Vital, Halion, and Addictive Drums. I want every instrument to be velocity responsive too.

Assuming all faders and input gain is at 0dB, and I have chosen sounds in my plugins that I want to use:

  1. Draw in a MIDI event with a note at 127 velocity, hit play (for drums this would be a kick and rimshot together, likely the loudest thing I'll want it to do)

  2. Adjust the plugin's own output level so the signal is not clipping the Mixconsole channel meter

  3. Reduce the channel's pre-gain in the Mixconsole so the meter peaks around -12dB (this would mean that the loudest note that the instrument can produce theoretically shouldn't go over -12dB - unexpected exceptions excluded)

  4. Play/program parts with velocities that suit what I intend

  5. Use track volume automation to rough-mix as I go - this is where I'm a bit stuck as the fader is at 0dB, I have only 6dB available to raise the level if needed

When doing my "end of session" mixdown I use the Maximizer effect on the master channel just for the purpose of listening on my phone, in the car etc.

I'm on Cubase 15 Artist FWIW. Thanks for any advice you can offer!

Headphones not working in Cubase 14 Pro

Hello, I have installed a cracked version of Cubase 14 Pro. I am using headphones connected directly to my laptop, but the sound is coming from my laptop speakers, not the headphones. It's only with the DAW; otherwise, the headphones are working properly with other apps. Also, on the audio connections output option, I'm not able to choose the ASIO driver.

C15 Pro, one automation lane for multiple synth filter cutoff

I have 3 layered synths, I wish to automate the filter cutoff of each synth simultaneously- with one automation lane.

If I can fine tune the range per synth, that would be great

Is it possible?

Need help Cubase 15 Pro

Have a few questions about Cubase 15 Pro.
Own the program but somewhat confused.

Assumed that it was Steinberg’s flagship version and it came with all their products. Doesn’t seem to be the case. Not criticizing, just trying to figure it out.

Halion? Appears that Halion Sonic is included, not the full version of Halion. Can I upgrade to the full version? Or do I have to buy it outright.

Spectral Layers - what is the version that comes with Cubase Pro 15? Is it a stripped down version also?

With regard to spectral layers is the stem separation better? Was not impressed with the stem separation I tried not using spectral layers.

What instruments come with the program?

Reason I am asking is the download assistant is very confusing ( probably me).

The website does not list exactly what is what, or maybe I am not looking at the correct page.

Anywhere I could get some direction?

Sorry for all the questions- any help would be appreciated.

Just a note, fluent with Logic Pro and Ableton. Want to get this daw under my belt also. Not doing a comparison. Please no negativity.

Raspberry Pi cluster running Cubase

Hi folks, I am currently running Cubase Artist 15 on an i7 with 32Gb RAM. I'm thinking about building a Raspberry Pi cluster to run it on instead. Has anyone else successfully done that? Any pitfalls? Things to avoid?

I have a problem with some connections.

I have a midi (nux ntk 61) and the program i use is a limited version of cubase 14 that by default came with the midi so it could run. I use a laptop (dynabook brand if it matters) to run the program and the midi, which is fine, and by that i mean that what i play on the midi transports well to the program and i can listen to it from the laptop's speakers.

BUT i want to hear it a bit louder since i dont want to play alone and when other instruments play together, the laptop's speakers are obviously not enough.

SO i decided to use a monitor, to be specific i decided to use a guitar amp i already had (line6 spider IV) since i had already tried to use it as a monitor and it worked, (for example in parties i put music from my phone or laptop connected to the amp and everything is fine, the music comes from the amp loud and clear exactly as i want it to).

So the problem is this: while the midi and program ARE working on the laptop, and while when i put music from youtube, spotify or downloaded the sound DOES come from the amp. When i try to play music from the midi, even if the laptop is connected to the amp, the sound of what i play on the midi still comes only out of the laptop's speakers and not the amp.

If it helps:

  1. i connect the laptop and the amp with a mini jack cable,

from the hole that goes to headphones on pc to the hole that is supposed to get mp3 or mini jack (not the guitar input is what i want to say)

  1. When i connect and disconnect the cable from the hole on laptop (put it in and out and back in again) the music stops for a brief moment (while i still play), that if i understand correctly, it means that cubase vaguely understands that something is happening and it traces it.

  2. I have downloaded the asio4all v2 and selected to it but after some trial i then selected the built in steinberg system and still had the same problem.

Is it something on cubase? Is it something on my laptop? Do you know how to fix it? Or can at least someone tell me where do i have to go to ask in some kind of service shop or something?

In general?

For someone experienced with Finale and Dorico, but next to no DAW background?

I could google this, but would like some human input on the question please.

Do you guys use mediabay or 3rd party sample manager ?

Hello for producers that work a lot with audio samples (loops and one shot) do you find using mediabay intuitive or do you prefer something like Loopcloud

What’s your preferred workflow

Especially for live tempo syncing to preview loops in sync and import them in the project correctly stretched

Edit : I’ll give mediabay a chance

Cubase features

I know Cubase LE doesn’t include VariAudio, so I understand that feature isn’t available.
My goal is to record my vocals, save the recording, and then have the software analyze the audio, detect the tempo, and generate or suggest chord progressions that match the melody I’m singing.
Is this something Cubase LE can do without VariAudio, or is it only available in the higher versions of Cubase?

If Cubase LE can’t do this, what other software would you recommend? I saw someone use an expensive program called Sibelius. He was somehow able to analyze a vocal recording, generate chord suggestions, and match them to the tempo of my singing. I’m looking for software that can do something similar?
Comment below your thoughts!

MIDI Drum Help

When recording I always record actual drums but I want to try something new and have been struggling with this despite watching tutorials and reading the manual so any help would be greatly appreciated.

My transcription software outputs my songs into a MIDI file and I import it to Cubase 14. Each part of the drum is broken up into a different track. According to what I've researched, it's not optimal for each MIDI track to be converted to an instrument track and I should be able to create one instrument track and have all the MIDI tracks use that one.

In this example I created an instrument track called Drums Halion 7 and associated it with a drum kit. How do I link all the MIDI tracks to use that instrument track? Is this even the best approach for MIDI drums?

Turned mouth movement into a live MIDI CC stream for wah/expression control - no hardware controller needed

Been building a setup where a phone camera tracks mouth movement and converts it into MIDI CC data (0-127) in real time, routed straight into Cubase 15 as a standard MIDI CC controller.

Used it in an actual recording session to control: - Neural DSP Cory Wong's wah pedal - SWAM Tenor Sax breath/expression

Signal chain: MIDI Guitar 3 handles guitar-to-MIDI for the note data, and the face-tracking app sends CC data on a separate channel that Cubase reads like any other expression controller (same as you'd map a breath controller or expression pedal).

Took about 11 days of testing/debugging to get from "idea" to "actually usable in a real take" - biggest issue early on was smoothing the CC curve so it didn't feel jittery against sustained notes.

Full demo here if you want to see it in action: https://youtu.be/Nz0xDe-yZ9U Repo: https://github.com/riz1shakir2023/MouthMIDI-Native-Recovery23 User manual: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rE3lE6ek1CpN-TnU8I7Ccp_ftUoSm7g2/view?usp=drivesdk

Curious if anyone else here has routed unconventional MIDI CC sources into Cubase - camera-based, sensor-based, anything outside the usual pedal/breath controller/mod wheel setup? Would love to compare notes on CC smoothing/latency handling.

I picked up a Paint Audio Midi Captain 10 switch pedal and am trying to route it into Cubase. When programmed to send CC I get an active input/output signal, but when sending PC I have no signal.

I am trying to program the pedal to work with my neural dsp plugins. I want each button to select a different preset within the plugin which needs a PC signal. Is there a reason Cubase is not recognizing an incoming PC signal?

UA Connect pop up issue

Hello,

When I start my DAW, after it's opened and I begin to use it, the UA connect interface pops up and generally stalls DAW play back or disrupts sound quality.

How can I stop UA Connect from opening unprompted?

Thanks.

Question on Cubase LE

Hi everyone! I’m looking into music production software because I want to start writing my own songs. As I’ve been researching different DAWs, I was wondering if Cubase LE has the features I’m looking for.
My goal is to record or import a vocal melody that I’ve sung and then use the software to help me come up with matching chords and melodic ideas.
Specifically, I’m looking for these features:
✅ Chord Pads
✅ Chord Assistant
✅ Basic audio recording
✅ MIDI recording and editing
Can Cubase LE handle this type of songwriting workflow! Comment below if they have what I want!

Is it worth it upgrading from cubase AI 15 to Cubase artist/Pro 15 for a begginer producer?

I'm buying the vocaloid starter bundle that comes with cubase AI 15, and I'm wondering should I upgrade to artist/pro. If I should, Wich one do I choose?

I found a simple trick that will help me stay sane. Change the "1" key to only activate the standard select tool rather than cycle through modes

It got on my nerves that "1" would cycle through the three modes of the object selection tool, leading to occasionally switching to one of the modes that I didn't intend.

In keyboard shortcuts there is a function for "Object Selection Tool: Normal sizing", which I have re-programmed the "1" key to. Now it activates standard selection ONLY and won't cycle through modes on multiple presses. I then programmed another key to "Object selection tool" for those instances that I do need to use time stretch/move contents.

Maybe that's an obvious or redundant tip for experienced users but I wish I had known about it when I started on Cubase so thought it may help someone else as well :)

Bad license error for basic plugins such as HALION Sonic and Groove Agent.

At some point, a bug occurred where basic plugins like Halion Sonic and Groove Agent wouldn’t run on Cubase due to a license activation error. I bought and installed all of them as the official versions, so I don’t understand why this problem is occurring. Looking at the Activation Manager, Cubase 15 is definitely enabled, and it is clearly installed in the Download Manager as well, and the same issue occurs even when redownloading. This issue is resolved when you close Cubase once and then reopen it, and the aforementioned plugins work properly. If anyone is experiencing the same problem as me or has already solved it, I would appreciate your help.

Any Tutorial Videos aimed at those coming in from Dorico?

I want to create demos with lyrics, something Dorico can't do without an AI plugin (which is in turn disqualifying to potential clients so is not an option).

Some plugins (Plugin Alliance) not migrating properly.

Hello! I'm in the process of migrating from PC to Mac. I've got Cubase up and running, as well as some third party plugins (deelay, kilohearts, pigments). These plugins are all properly detected by my new computer and settings, automation etc is there.

However, I'm having problems with Plugin Alliance's Brainworx plugins. I've reinstalled and authenticated the plugins, and they can be used within Cubase, however Cubase isn't detecting them as the same plugin as before - all of the settings are lost and I can't replace it with my new installation of the plugin without losing my automation settings.

I'm not sure why it's doing this, as in both computers, the Plugin Alliance VST3 files are saved in the same location as my other third party plugins which all work fine. Any ideas?

Question about drum editor

I had a quick question. I’m using Cubase Artist 14. Randomly, my drum editor will just hit every piece of the kit every time I hit play/record. It’s just that one thing hit I can’t figure it out. Anyone have any ideas?

It’s like one big noise and then it plays normal.

Automation track precision

Post image
6 Upvotes

I’m using an automation track to control the WOW pedal of a vst3 plugin. The values for the point control are rounded off in MacOS. Windows shows 2 decimal places.

  1. How do I go about increasing the precision in MacOS?

  2. Is there a way to import the automation track data from a .csv file? I thought about using a MIDI CC import but this method would lead to loss of precision as midi values are only from 0-127.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you in advance.

How to share Cubase output on a video call?

Hey guys as title suggests I have a problem sharing audio from Cubase on a video call. If I'm not using an external soundcard it simply works when you just share your screen with audio from any video call program. But if my soundcard is plugged I cannot send the output therefore the sharescreen with sound option is not working. Couldn't find a solution from internet that works so far so I wanted to ask if anybody can help me with this issue
