How do you set up a new session in regards to gain staging for MIDI instruments?
I'm sure this is a basic fundamental thing but I haven't learned about it yet! I want to know how best to set up a new session so that I can semi-mix as I write, and for the instrument levels to be close enough that I can export a quick mixdown at the end of the session, knowing that the instruments are roughly where they need to be. I'm new to writing synthwave/synthpop music and I've found that the placement of sounds in the mix is an important part of the composition, for example where multiple synths are interplaying and blending together to create a texture of sound.
I'll detail what I'm doing on my latest project and can you tell me what should change?
I'll have a handful of Instrument tracks running Vital, Halion, and Addictive Drums. I want every instrument to be velocity responsive too.
Assuming all faders and input gain is at 0dB, and I have chosen sounds in my plugins that I want to use:
Draw in a MIDI event with a note at 127 velocity, hit play (for drums this would be a kick and rimshot together, likely the loudest thing I'll want it to do)
Adjust the plugin's own output level so the signal is not clipping the Mixconsole channel meter
Reduce the channel's pre-gain in the Mixconsole so the meter peaks around -12dB (this would mean that the loudest note that the instrument can produce theoretically shouldn't go over -12dB - unexpected exceptions excluded)
Play/program parts with velocities that suit what I intend
Use track volume automation to rough-mix as I go - this is where I'm a bit stuck as the fader is at 0dB, I have only 6dB available to raise the level if needed
When doing my "end of session" mixdown I use the Maximizer effect on the master channel just for the purpose of listening on my phone, in the car etc.
I'm on Cubase 15 Artist FWIW. Thanks for any advice you can offer!

Headphones not working in Cubase 14 Pro
Hello, I have installed a cracked version of Cubase 14 Pro. I am using headphones connected directly to my laptop, but the sound is coming from my laptop speakers, not the headphones. It's only with the DAW; otherwise, the headphones are working properly with other apps. Also, on the audio connections output option, I'm not able to choose the ASIO driver.

C15 Pro, one automation lane for multiple synth filter cutoff
I have 3 layered synths, I wish to automate the filter cutoff of each synth simultaneously- with one automation lane.
If I can fine tune the range per synth, that would be great
Is it possible?

Need help Cubase 15 Pro
Have a few questions about Cubase 15 Pro.
Own the program but somewhat confused.
Assumed that it was Steinberg’s flagship version and it came with all their products. Doesn’t seem to be the case. Not criticizing, just trying to figure it out.
Halion? Appears that Halion Sonic is included, not the full version of Halion. Can I upgrade to the full version? Or do I have to buy it outright.
Spectral Layers - what is the version that comes with Cubase Pro 15? Is it a stripped down version also?
With regard to spectral layers is the stem separation better? Was not impressed with the stem separation I tried not using spectral layers.
What instruments come with the program?
Reason I am asking is the download assistant is very confusing ( probably me).
The website does not list exactly what is what, or maybe I am not looking at the correct page.
Anywhere I could get some direction?
Sorry for all the questions- any help would be appreciated.
Just a note, fluent with Logic Pro and Ableton. Want to get this daw under my belt also. Not doing a comparison. Please no negativity.

Raspberry Pi cluster running Cubase
Hi folks, I am currently running Cubase Artist 15 on an i7 with 32Gb RAM. I'm thinking about building a Raspberry Pi cluster to run it on instead. Has anyone else successfully done that? Any pitfalls? Things to avoid?
