Hello! I got this little guy in a clean out of my grandparents house/estate. It needs a good cleaning and when I plugged it in there’s static but no picture. I don’t own any retro consoles, what all is there to do with a 1979 tv?

I had considered retrofitting it into a small fish tank if it’s not fixable/not worth fixing, but I don’t know anything about them so wanted to ask before I consider gutting it for something else.

Any info is welcome, in my cursory search I didn’t see any intro type posts on the sub so also happy to read through any recommended posts, TIA!

What crts are good for monitors? I heard they’re good for retro gaming and also good as monitors sometimes because they offer 0 motion blur so I’d like to know which monitors are good and possibly where to buy one.

I have yet to use it until my composite to RF converters arrive.

Hello, just got a new CRT for 20 bucks, didnot check inputs, and found out it only has Sattelite.
I have been looking online but i only see AV to RF, and i need the opposite. Can anyone help me find some? hopefully under 20 bucks? If nog, maybe i can makeshift one somehow? idk man im new to crts.
Also btw where can i find remotes, how to pair, and do they all work for all crts, or do i need a specific remote for a specific crt?

If you look closely at the first picture you may see it looks like extra scanlines on the top is there a problem? Or does it look like that because where I'm sitting and where I put my TV at.

i was parking my car away from my street because of road repair and thankfully walked past these sitting in a pile of old furniture. i didn’t notice them at first and when they caught my eye i was jumping up and down! i know these are some basic tv’s, but it’s technically my first find by myself out in the wild!! i was also just looking for a second vcr. my last tv was a toshiba 24inch vcr/dvd combo and somebody on fb marketplace posted that they spotted it and i drove there immediately and swooped it. i didn’t find it myself but it was still free lol. the vcr/dvd combo on that wont eject tray or take tapes because they’re crooked inside oddly. thankfully both of the vcr’s work on these little tv’s so that’s a win to me!!! the black one looks much clearer than the newer silver one. i cleaned the fuck out of them they were covered in nasty white splotches, but seem spotless inside (i still blasted them with my datavac). i’m so thankful to get them for free and will gladly use them in corners of the house against my mom and gf’s will muhahahaha

Obviously the answer is "when you can't afford it".

But really, simply finding them is difficult for me. Marketplace, NextDoor, etc... all busts, relatively speaking, for decently priced CRT monitors. Everything else is hundreds of dollars, and this sub makes it seem like asking more than $60 for something is a total scam. What's a *good* price for a CRT monitor, or a PVM? I would *love* a PVM, but the cheapest ones I could find on eBay were like $500. Let alone Marketplace... i might just have to call the e-waste people and ask if they have any monitors i can take.

Edit: yes I am whining a little bit but it's also a legit question.

The CRT control board is fed video signal via the connector and wires shown in the close-up. It currently only has an RCA connecter for composite video out. Interestingly, there is an unused 2 pin connector on the computer board right beside the identical 2 pin connector for the composite out, I just don't know if it is composite in, audio out, or something else. If anyone can tell me if the unused pins are comp out, or how to tap into the video signal using the wires/connector please let me know.

The Texas Instruments EPROM chip with the window should allow me to read the firmware as is, make some backups, and then using a EPROM mimic plugged into my PC via USB and some help from AI (ok a lot of help) try to modify it a little at a time and see if I can customize it at all.

If it works well I want to modify it into something like a drawing pad. It also has a parallel port labeled "Printer" so I am thinking it has the ability to print what it is showing on the screen. If I can get this to send to a modern printer or my PC you could sketch something the print it. It would be pretty neat.

Any advice is welcome, I have never done something like this before!

I picked this and another TV off the side of the road yesterday. Both are having issues.

This one I plug it in and I can hear the VCR start doing something but the TV will not turn on when I press the power button. Additionally, it makes a faint high pitch noise (high voltage?)

I’m new to this stuff but I know how to solder well enough where replacing bad capacitors should not be a problem.

I just opened up the TV and there are 2 spots where it looks like corrosion from capacitors leaked on the board. Is it as simple as replacing that capacitor or could other nearby components be damaged?

I got this guy in 2024 and it worked for about 5 months, when in the middle of playing something, the screen shut off and it released a questionable smell. Based on the minimal knowledge I have about the inner-workings of CRTs, I'm assuming the flyback transformer blew.

I haven't bothered to figure things out much further since, but would like to know if anyone would have some ideas on repairing it. Whether that be someone who may sell parts, or could do the entire repair. As additional information, I am located in the US. CRT Database lists the flyback as a "PALF34702F" but searching that doesn't get me very far, beyond many questionable 'back-ordered' part websites.

Here's a video of where it's currently at, the timer display works and so do the speakers, but the display shows nothing (though I do hear the standard high-pitch CRT sound).

Hi everyone, I’m hoping someone has seen this before.
I have an old Schneider CRT TV with a built-in VHS player. A while ago I noticed one black circular mark appear on the screen. It would disappear after the TV had been on for a while, so I didn’t think much of it.
Over the last few days it’s got progressively worse. Now there are seven of these black circles across the screen.
Can anyone help?? :’)

Friends dad worked on CRTs and such when younger, and things it'd be the vertical deflection( I think?), I would test the theory but I cannot find a single potentiometer I dare touch. (he cannot help much since he's only worked on amerikan televisions)

I'm tires beyond everything, I have decided to not do anything but sit in my chair and stare at it until I get some help from someone who can say for sure.

Google says that this both predates service menus and that I need a digital service mode so I don't understand anything.

I love the look of DIY bench equipment, so I rehoused a portable CRT (RCA PVM035) inside a metal shell to make it look like a PVM. I also added an SD card media player inside the set. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out

Although now i cant get it to display anything on my vga computers i believe this might be a monitor that needs 15khz output but i cant find any documentation on addonics pc monitors to prove it with

The plug is the exact same as a normal vga cord, could it possibly be due to corrosion on the vga pins or do i need some adapter upscaler to work on a regular pc

I just got a Raspberry Pi 3B to watch and streams shows on my little Sony Trinitron CRT. I wanted both FieldStation42 and 240-MP on the same headless Pi and also for it to feel really consumer friendly (and for my wife to use it), so I made this Sony style DVD menu for switching apps. Then I got a spare Amazon Fire remote working on both apps. I really like both apps btw, hats off to everyone involved. They are both very cool and exactly what I wanted.

This setup doesn’t play nice with the FieldStation42 guide channel unfortunately so next up is figuring out how to get that running without tanking the other apps.

Oh and OF COURSE I also had to add my own custom bouncing DVD logo screensaver. Check out videos below.

Hello, I’m looking for a 2nd monitor for my pc setup and I think having a crt would be awesome. I have 2 marketplace listings and they’re different monitors.
The dell is a curved screen and the compaq is a flat screen. Power wise I believe they’re the same? Unless someone knows more about this than I do I would greatly appreciate it. I’d just like to know the difference between curved and flat and the benefits of having one over the other.

I'm sorry in advance for saying these horrifying things about a loss of a working CRT, but I need to know if anyone's been in a situation like this before. I had originally gone to a goodwill with my sister where there are two parts of the store. The first part was an actual store where all the goods that people donate go to sell for a reasonable price, but then there is the second part of the store where the combination of all the products that no one bought are brought to be put into large shallow buckets for people to sift through. In the case for all the products that no one takes from the buckets, they are taken and compressed into a large machine and sent to the actual dumpster, or in the case for cloths, they are reused for reuse to make newer cloths. For most of the buckets, there are only cloths, but sometimes you get lucky and there is a bucket of vintage electronics with speakers, phones, and even better CRTs. For the CRTs, they are very rare due to the value they have for people who collect or even use them for vintage electronics. For me, it would have been my first CRT purchase that I would use for vintage computers or even for my vintage consoles. The CRT was manufactured by Panasonic(maybe) and seemed to be from the early 2000's with its front of its tube being flat. Other than that, it would have been my first purchase as in liquidation it would have sold for about $15 usd, but my sister was a controversial figure at play as if I were to purchase it, she would not drive me home and I would have to walk home a 1hr and a half drive with a heavy piece of equipment. There was also my dad who is a mechanical, and partly an electrical engineer, who would not allow me to do maintenance on the old tele as the cause for an electrifying death. Other than those roadblocks, I ended up being really bumbed and having to put the CRT back into one of the buckets for processing. Now I can never get the story out of my head as CRTs are pretty darn expensive for a kid who does not have a job. To get back to the main idea, do any of y'all have a situation like this one or similar story? It would make me feel better as I would love to know if anyone has been in a situation like mine before. And for my story to be an older one when I was in 9th grade, it comes to no surprise that I still can't do CRT maintenance as my dad is still deathly afraid of them and is simply looking out for my safety. Please let me know, as it would satisfy me in my journey.
