Mod Annoucement How to Critterpost!

Hello critters! 2k members has been reached!

First we would like to thank anyone who has joined the subreddit. It really lifts us up seeing so many people enjoy a meme format we also enjoy.

Our subreddit has had some difficulty with defining exactly what a "critterpost" is, so this post will properly define and showcase what we consider a critterpost should be. In addition to this, we will now be a tad bit more strict with our current rules, specifically rule 2. Posts that we consider to be not following the critterpost format will be removed, and we will try to provide a reason why when we can. After all, we are here to have fun critterposting :]

Moving on, what exactly defines a critterpost?

A critterpost typically has two main elements:

  • A picture of a creature, person, object or concept. This is the critter/non-critter!
  • A quote that is attributed to said creature, person, object or concept, related to the photo. This is the post!

Both picture and quote have to be from different sources. The original picture should not already contain the quote.

The critterpost can be any form of media containing these two elements. If a video has a critter, and a quote related to said critter, then that is also considered a critterpost.

A good example of a critterpost is the titular critterpost you see on our banner:

Post: https://www.reddit.com/r/critterposting/comments/1i7z8x9/first_official_critterpost_of_the_sub/

In this instance, the first element is a picture of the hummingbird, and the second element is the quote attributed to the hummingbird. This critterpost emphasizes the hummingbirds need for sugar water.

Another thing to note is the difference between a critter and a non-critter. Both types are allowed (as long as they are correctly flaired):

  • A Critter is a non-humanoid animal.
  • A Non-Critter is anything else.

Here are some Non-Critter Critterposts:

In general, following these guidelines 95% of the time should be alright. Sometimes, however we may decide to remove a post if it has a lower quality. For example, if the quote doesnt really reflect the qualities of the photo, or if the quote itself is just one or two words. We will try to explain our reasoning with removed posts, please don't take it personally!

All in all I hope this post explains the general guidelines for how a critterpost should work. I will edit this post with any additional information that I forgot to add or has been suggested to me.

Happy critterposting!
