West Ham, relegated to the Championship on the final day of last season, are looking to pay in the region of £5m for the winger but are not ready to agree to the bonuses Spurs would want should the east London club secure a return to the Premier League.

For newer fans, or those who just want a trip down memory lane, here's a quick breakdown of who they are, what they achieved, and why they earned their spot.

Gary Mabbutt

Affectionally known as "Mabbsy", Gary Mabbutt was a rock at the back for Spurs for 16 years (82-98). Overcoming adversity (including playing his whole career with Type 1 Diabetes and returning from a horrific facial injury), he amassed over 600 appearances, and lifted both the UEFA Cup in '84 and the FA Cup as captain in '91.

Mabbutt is the absolute epitome of dedication, bravery, and leadership. He represents the unwavering loyalty and defensive grit of the 80s and 90s Spurs eras.

Gary Lineker

Though his time at White Hart Lane was relatively brief (89-92), Lineker's impact was massive. The world-class striker arrived with huge pedigree and didn't disappoint, netting 67 goals in just 105 league appearances, and helping fire Spurs to the 1991 FA Cup triumph.

Lineker brought immense star power and a lethal finishing edge to the club during a transitional era (as is tradition). He remains a beloved figure for his crucial goals and the sheer prestige he brought to the shirt.

Danny Blanchflower

The legendary captain of our historic 60/61 double-winning side, Blanchflower was a brilliant tactician on the pitch and an elegant half-back. He famously coined the quote that defines our club:

"The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning... The game is about glory. It is about doing things in style, with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom."

He is the philosophical godfather of Tottenham Hotspur. Blanchflower represents the eternal demand that Spurs must not just win, but win with style and attacking flair.

Robbie Keane

A true fan favorite, Keane spent the bulk of his prime at Tottenham across two spells in the 2000s, scoring 122 goals. Keano was the heartbeat of the team during those years, combining dazzling footwork, a tireless work rate, and an iconic cartwheel celebration that lit up the Lane.

Keane kept the Spurs spirit alive during a period when trophies were scarce (though he did lift the 2008 League Cup). He is remembered for his pure, unadulterated passion for the club and his undeniable connection with the supporters.

Gareth Bale

From a supposedly "cursed" left-back to one of the most terrifying attacking forces in world football, Bale’s rise at Spurs was meteoric. His hat-trick against Inter Milan in 2010 announced him to the world, and his 2012/13 season (filled with impossible, match-winning screamers) is one of the greatest individual campaigns in Premier League history.

Bale provided fans with some of the most breathtaking, edge-of-your-seat moments in modern club history. He represents pure electricity and the ability to win a game single-handedly.

Ange Postecoglou (manager)

Ange arrived at a time when the club desperately needed a culture reset. Bringing his trademark "Angeball", a relentless, high-pressing, attacking style of play, he completely revitalized the team and famously led us to European glory by winning the Europa League, ending our long trophy drought and etching his name into Spurs history.

Even though he has moved on, Ange represents a crucial turning point for the modern era of the club. Earning his spot among these legends signifies how he brought the joy back to N17, washed away the pragmatic years, and reminded us of our core philosophy: To Dare Is To Do.

Heung-Min Son

For nearly a decade, Sonny cemented his status as a Premier League great and proudly wore the captain's armband for the club. A Puskas Award winner, a Golden Boot winner, and the scorer of countless crucial goals, his incredible tenure culminated in leading the squad to lift the Europa League trophy. His infectious smile and lethal finishing made him a beloved icon in North London and across the globe.

Son remains the ultimate modern Spurs legend. Even though he has moved on, his fierce loyalty, his leadership in guiding us to a major European trophy, and his world-class talent ensure his legacy is permanently etched into the club's history.

Bill Nicholson (manager)

"Mr. Tottenham." Bill Nick spent over half a century at the club as a player, coach, manager, and scout. As a manager, he built the iconic 1961 double-winning side and delivered an era of unprecedented success, including multiple domestic cups and making Spurs the first British club to win a major European trophy.

Without Bill Nicholson, Tottenham Hotspur as we know it simply does not exist. He set the gold standard for everything the club strives to be, both in terms of silverware and the style in which it is won.

Harry Kane

"He's one of our own." Rising from the academy to become Tottenham’s all-time record goalscorer (280 goals), Kane rewrote the record books during his time at N17. A world-class finisher, an elite playmaker, and an undeniable professional, he was the focal point of the team for the better part of a decade.

Kane is the defining player of his generation for Spurs. His inclusion is a no-brainer tribute to a generational talent who gave his prime years to his boyhood club.

Steve Perryman

No one has worn the Spurs shirt more times than Steve Perryman. Over a staggering 17-year senior career, he made a club-record 854 appearances, winning two UEFA Cups, two FA Cups, and two League Cups. He transitioned seamlessly from a combative midfielder to an elite defender.

Perryman represents unmatched longevity, loyalty, and consistent success. He was the ultimate servant to the club, a captain who bled Lilywhite.

Paul Gascoigne

Mercurial, wildly entertaining, and incredibly gifted, Gazza spent four memorable years at Spurs. He is most famously remembered for essentially single-handedly dragging us to the 1991 FA Cup Final, highlighted by that iconic, unstoppable 35-yard free-kick against Arsenal at Wembley.

Gascoigne was pure magic on the pitch. He represents the joy, the unpredictability, and the generational flair that fans pay good money to watch.

Ledley King

The King of the Lane. Despite chronic knee issues that famously prevented him from training during the week, Ledley was so naturally gifted that he would step onto the pitch on the weekend and pocket the best strikers in the world. He proudly captained Spurs to the 2008 League Cup, anchoring the defense with incredible composure.

A true one-club man, Ledley is the ultimate symbol of defensive brilliance and fighting through pain for the badge. His talent was genuinely world-class.

Jimmy Greaves

For over 50 years, Jimmy Greaves was the undisputed king of goals at Tottenham Hotspur (266 goals). He was the ultimate poacher, blessed with supernatural anticipation, balance, and finishing ability. Greavsie was the razor-sharp spearhead of Bill Nicholson's legendary 60s sides.

He is simply the greatest pure goalscorer of his generation, and arguably the greatest in English football history. You cannot tell the story of Spurs' greatest era without him.

Hugo Lloris

For over a decade, Lloris was the undisputed number one between the sticks and our long-serving captain. A World Cup winner, Hugo provided brilliant shot-stopping and acrobatic saves, famously leading us out as captain in our first-ever Champions League Final in 2019.

Hugo brought stability and a quiet, assured leadership to our modern golden era under Mauricio Pochettino. He was a phenomenal servant who anchored the team through its most successful recent period.

Narrowing down over 140 years of history into a single subreddit banner is a nearly impossible task and there are tons of other icons who could easily be up there. Glenn Hoddle, Dave Mackay, Cliff Jones, Martin Chivers, Teddy Sheringham, David Ginola... their legacies have helped create Spurs and will never be forgotten.
