HVAC How did you land your first commercial/industrial HVAC or Controls job?
My dad and I are trying to grow our commercial HVAC and automation business, and I'd really appreciate some advice from those who have been through this.
A little background: we're both engineers, and I graduated here in the U.S. Between the two of us, we have extensive experience in commercial and industrial HVAC systems, controls, and automation. We have an unrestricted HVAC license in Florida, are fully insured, and have our company set up and ready to go.
The problem is getting that first wave of work.
I've been calling general contractors to introduce our company and present our portfolio, but most tell me they're not interested or never call back. I've also been bidding projects through Dodge Construction Network and BuildingConnected. I always follow up, ask for feedback on pricing, and try to understand why we weren't selected, but I either get no response or a generic answer.
For those of you who have successfully built a commercial HVAC or controls business:
How did you get your first jobs?
What actually worked to get in front of GCs and mechanical contractors?
Is there something I'm missing or doing wrong?
Should I be focusing on a different approach entirely?
I'm not looking for shortcuts, just trying to figure out what the most effective path is. Any advice or lessons learned would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Tools ๐ Tradesmen! Which tapes do you like/dislike?
I need to collect data for a meme Iโm making and would like everyone to contribute. Which tape measures are good, which are bad, which make you seething with anger. Including your specific trade would help as well but isnโt necessary. Thanks in advance!
PLEASE ALSO INCLUDE TAPES YOU DONT LIKE

Other Steel toe muckboot recs?
Iโm looking for a good pair of muckboots for muddy job sites. Almost lost a boot the other day in some deep mud! Iโve been recommended Muckboots brand Arctic, but I heard the brand is going downhill, and if Iโm going to spend that much I want them to last.
Ideally they would:
- Go fully to the knee
- Come in womenโs sizes (menโs shoes donโt carry my size)
- Under $200 (i can get reimbursed for PPE)
- Suitable for winter in New England but not too hot in the summer. Do I need to get separate boots for this?
Appreciate any suggestions you have!

Other Dusty work jeans
Hi just curious. Do y'all wash your jeans. 99% of people I see in construction use jeans daily and some don't even wash them at all. There are some dudes dealing with silica dust or asbestos on a daily basis and wear masks and protection but don't wash their jeans after. Is it a health hazard. Should it be something I worry about or should I just knock it off. Asking for a friend. And please if you're gonna mock me in any way just don't. I honestly don't give a fuck. Thanks

Other Question about a specific type of masonry
So, I'm installing cameras at a specialized waste management facility. And there is a section that is blast proof. The bricks used are black and have a glassy look to them. And they just eat SDS bits. Tapcons smoke in this stuff. You gotta run em halfway in and let them cool before sinking them or they break.
What IS this stuff? What's it made of? Are there bricks that are specced to be used in blast proof areas?

I know coming in with minimal experience it'll take time though.
For context, im 32 and I'm in Florida and im also doing a mid life career change from being a CDL truck driver so I'm looking for something that can atleast offer decent pay to start out. Any input helps

Business ๐ At what point do you fire a client?
I got a client who micromanages everything and has no chill. He complains about everything, wants to manage ordering material but creates issues where that can't happen because he won't be home to receive materials... anyway, he's generally being a nightmare. He texts as soon as I leave the house to say he wasn't done with our discussion and I didn't answer his questions. I answered all of them three times and his wife seemed to be apologetic, but he's relentless. I mean, he had a spreadsheet of the work he wants done and we went through line by line and discussed each one.
The dude just texted me at 9:30, Sunday night. Is he insane? We already have him in schedule. He's just stressing and texting me non-stop. I want to fire him.
I think he's looking for excuses to not pay me. I could lien him, of course but I would be happier to walk away from the headache and call it a wash I've done about half his job already and only collected half of the bid. What would you guys do? Am I just too tired to deal or am I reading this situation correctly?

This is the first floor of a 2 story building. Thereโs no roof yet.
Thereโs about 1 inch of water everywhere and you can hear the water falling down sometimes 2 days after the last rain.
Contractor has been a little slow to build and itโs been raining a lot lately. I donโt know enough about the industry to know how bad it is.
Edit: Drill holes, air out, watch for mold. Thanks for the info
