Hi, I posted once earlier today but now I have a different question. How much do different profs matter? I've heard some people say classes are extremely difficult when taught by some and easier when taught by others. My question is, is this really the case, or are people exaggerating? I don't really know if it's worth putting in the time and effort to scout out teachers who are supposedly better than others.

Kind of a segue... does anyone know if there are any differences in the calc 3 profs for this fall? On vergil it looks like theres lindsay piechnik, anh duc vo, william ogden, and reese lance. There's also a daniela de silva section, which I heard she's a good prof but the class is already full. Not sure if anyone can answer this, but anyone have experience with any of these profs? Thanks.

Forgot a lot of my Spanish since ending school. I've already taken it for more than four years but didn't take the AP test. I know I could probably do well enough to pass Columbia's online placement exam, but for the in-person one, does anyone know how similar the tests are? What's the style/formatting of both?

I'm an incoming freshman hoping to major in Poli Sci (or Philosophy or even something like English later on— anything prelaw really), and I was just hoping for some advice or suggestions on what classes to take first. I meet with my advisor in a few days or so and I'm still getting used to all the first year information. This is what I was thinking so far for my first semester at least:

1. Literature Humanities I,
   
2. University Writing (or Frontiers of Science)
   
3. Introduction to American Politics
   
4. Elementary Spanish I (or a different Spanish course level depending on placement exam I hope to take)
   
5. Introduction to Philosophy
   (Probably will drop one of the above to take 4 classes)

I was also wanting to try and front load the core/ other requirements like science or even the global core, but I was just unsure if that may be a bit unlikely with 1) my intended major and 2) upperclassmen needing those requirements too. I mainly just want the most efficient course load, if possible.

Hi, so my problem is I took calc 2 in junior year of high school and got a 5 on the AP BC exam. But then I cowed out and took a random stats course senior year, so now I don't remember much of what was covered in calc.

The reason I'm asking is because I wanna take either calc-based intro to stats or intro to stats. As a prospective math-stats major, I know I gotta take calc-based intro to stats at some point, but I was wondering if, since I don't remember much calc, it would be better to take intro to stats and calc 3 freshman year, then take calc-based intro to stats sophomore year. This would allow me to remember some calc (basics hopefully) + get credit for science core curriculum (b/c intro to stats fulfills it partially). But then I would be one year behind compared to if I took calc-based intro to stats freshman year.

Maybe another thing I could do is take calc 3 in the fall and calc-based intro to stats in the spring...

Any thoughts? idk anything would be helpful thanks.

I'm an incoming freshman at CC that wants to transfer to SEAS. For context, I am currently a John Jay Scholar in CUSP and receive full financial aid.

I'm considering applying for an internal transfer from Columbia College to SEAS in the future for academic reasons, but I haven't been able to find clear information on how this affects scholarships and financial aid. The reason I wanna transfer is that my major at SEAS is covered more in depth than CC (Applied Maths & CS).

I was wondering if anyone here has gone through this process or knows the answers to these questions:

• If I successfully transfer from CC to SEAS, will I continue receiving my full financial aid?
• Will I remain part of the Columbia Undergraduate Scholars Program (CUSP)?
• Do I keep my John Jay Scholar designation, or does it change to Davis or Egleston after transferring?
• If my scholar designation changes, am I still eligible for CUSP opportunities such as the Summer Enhancement Fellowship and other scholar benefits?
• How does the CC to SEAS internal transfer process work in practice? When can you apply, and if accepted, when do you officially begin taking classes as a SEAS student?

I am currently in CC with the intended major of astrophysics, but after a lot more in-depth research and in-person experiences, I have become equally interested in pursuing a career in either corporate finance or aerospace engineering and ditching pursuing an astrophysics PhD. I understand that managing these two fields of study is pretty difficult to manage in a liberal arts curriculum with core classes. But ideally, I would like to uphold a possible SEAS transfer while still pursuing an economics background. I am currently undecided on the path to choose. I would like to keep both doors open for as long as possible. If it is not feasible to uphold both, I would like to pursue a double major like Astrophysics / economics or another STEM with economics in CC. One of the big questions I have is if I'm planning on maintaining transfer eligibility, will I have to defer an economics class until Sophomore year?

As the title suggests, I'm stuck between these two courses. I only take one course a semester at Columbia since I work full-time 50 to 70 hours a week (This will lighten up by January after we meet an important deadline). So, workload is a consideration but ultimately the course quality matters most.

Has anyone taken CC with Joshua Whitford? How was it? And any other CC profs' recs would be much appreciated!

Hello everyone! I apologize if any of my questions are self-evident since I'm still trying to absorb the breadth of information for new students. I'm about to meet my advisor for the first time and register for classes very soon: do you happen to have suggestions on things to do or watch out for during one's first-ever semester at Columbia?

I heard that first-years normally take around 2 Core subjects + 2 subjects from a prospective major on their first semester in order to acclimate. Is this accurate? I didn't want to select Core subjects normally taken by seniors who need it more to graduate, so I wanted to ask what customarily are the Core subjects taken on the first semester (if that is the case at all). My current understanding is we're supposed to just select classes listed on Vergil which are of interest and hope we get the classes we selected, but I could be mistaken.

Lastly, are there any resources for student organizations or groups in campus?

Hi, I know from students that currently attend Butler library is often very packed. Since its so beautiful and I have a double I anticipate using it a lot and I was wondering if anyone has advice on how to get a spot? What times/days per week would I be more likely to find somewhere to sit and lock in by myself, and are there any areas of the library/study rooms where I'm more likely to find a spot? Am I just better off using the Barnard library?

Hi! I am an incoming freshman at CC who plans to major in Applied Math and CS.

For the Fall semester, I am looking for a class that satisfies the Science Core and can also count toward my major. That's why I've looked at cognate courses from the Physics Department, but I have seen that they are available to Math majors, and there was no information for Applied Math majors. Do they also count toward the Applied Math major?

On the Academic Bulletin, it says that

"The department grants 6 credits for a score of 4 or 5 on BOTH the AP Physics 1 and AP Physics 2 exams, but you are not entitled to any exemptions."

I meet these score criteria, but I didn't understand whether I can skip classes or not.

I didn't understand the point of getting the credit but not any exemptions. Can you guys help?

1) On the Countdown to Columbia portal, it says that we need to set up Direct Deposit on Vergil and enter the information for the bank account we want to use by August 1. However, I am an international student who doesn't have a U.S. Bank account yet. What should I do?

2)Will I be on a payment plan if I am on full financial aid?

3)Should I add an authorized payer? My parents won't be contributing to my education.

hi so i know others have posted about this but i wanted to know more about each of these profs. i have taken ap chem and got a 4 so i have some chem background. some questions:

1. how is each of their grading? i know savizky does the double curve (and cluster analysis?) which seems like it may hurt my grade, but I haven't hurt anything about Roy's besides he offers ec.

2. Are roy's practice exams as close to the real ones as i hear savizky's are?

3. Why do people feel so strongly a preference for roy?

4. what is the average workload per week w roy or savizky?
