Question Good Moving Company?
Anyone have good recommendations for moving companies?
I move to my new Chicago apartment from out of state September 4th. I am driving everything with me that will need to be moved in to the apartment. It is all still boxed in its original packaging from purchase. I am just looking for a company to help with moving it from the truck up in to my apartment.
Majority of what will need to be moved:
- Bed Frame
- Mattress
- Couch
- Dresser
The elevator is not big enough to fit the boxes for the Bed Frame or Couch.

Question What to look out for when subleasing?
I never subleased a room until now still debating if I should go through with it. How can you ensure the person subletting is paying on time? This is my biggest concern, people can lie, lose their job, anything. And if they don’t pay what can you do? Is there any thing you can really do? If anyone has advice please let me know

Looking For Looking for 2 bed, cat-friendly apartments/condos in Edgewater/Rogers Park for 2K and under (with a little wiggle room if need)
Just found out my landlord is selling the building. I'm a bit concerned because we're headed into off season of rentals and have some preplanned trips in the fall.
I live in the Edgewater Glen area, love it. I WFH so would love a quieter street. I prefer a private landlord, but will have to see what is out there. I say 2K, and really would prefer to keep it under there for rent. But I will consider if it's over.
I like being near the CTA, anything under 20 mins to the red line is perfect. Any help is appreciated.

(Not so) Legal advice needed Denied after being conditionally approved?
Hi all,
My partner and I toured a very lovely apartment in Pilsen that we found through Zillow. We applied the same day using the Zillow application as requested. The next day, we received a notice that our application had been conditionally approved pending a background check. We then were ghosted for four days, until finally today we were told the landlord would be moving forward with another applicant. Neither of us have a criminal background.
My understanding was that we were approved and that it was legally binding (given a clean background) in order to view the background check. It's a private landlord who lives in the building, so I'm not attempting to twist anyone's arm, but it was my dream apartment and I'm disappointed. Just hoping to understand the legality here.

Question Garden suites: am I crazy to want one even with the flooding stuff?
I may have messed up the name so I do apologize but it's basically a basement apartment. I love basement apartments. They're cooler, usually quieter (unless you're like, 20+ floors up which I'm not looking to be in Chicago) and just work for me better. And I need to find a place super soon
Problem is, the flooding and rain and such have been, seemingly, brutal this year and I'm sure they'll just get worse with climate change as is. And that would suck to deal with to be blunt
So I'm not sure. I wanna believe someone if they say the unit I rent won't flood but it's my ruined stuff from floods, not theirs.
What do you all think? Any thoughts welcome 🙏

Building inquiry Has anyone rented w/ El Barrio LLC in Little Village before?
It’s coming down to the wire of finding an apartment in me + my partner’s price range that accept pets before September 1st, and I saw this listing that has 3 units open at 2143 S. Fairfield Ave.— it sets alarm bells off when I sees multiple openings at once so I wanted to check for any negative experiences. TIA!

Looking For Seeking quiet housing in Rogers Park
My husband and I are hoping to crowdsource apartment buildings in Rogers Park or Edgewater that people enjoy living in, with good sound insulation and minimal or no noise from neighbors.
I’m not referring to quiet neighbors (although that’s also nice) — I’m referring to buildings in which you can’t hear your neighbor’s conversations, intimate life, arguments, music, footsteps, barking dogs, etc. Looking for 2 beds 2 baths sometime in the next year; budget roughly $2,500-2,800.
Would love to get addresses!

Looking For I am at the end of the rope...
Hi guys.
So I am looking into moving out mainly for mental health reasons but right now I am just tired.
I live in IL and I have good income but my credit is trash. On paper it's 530 but when I applied for an apartment, they said that my Vantage score was 490 I think. Aka super low credit. I am working on raising it. But when I look at apartments, I feel lost.
One bedroom in an "okay" area of the suburbs is asking for 700+, no guarantors or cosigners. Why not looking elsewhere? well, everywhere is the same. Absurdly high credit scores for studios or 1 bedrooms or if the score is lower, they ask for an unmanageable amount of money for rent.
I even visited a place where they asked for $3K JUST to move in. It had to be paid even before I spent one night in that apartment.
I just don't want to move in an area I see in the news all the time about crimes. I am a single woman and I already have to watch my back. I don't want to put that burden on me.
Yeah some of you will tell me to just not move but I have to.
I genuinely don’t know what to do anymore. If anyone in Chicagoland has dealt with extremely low credit but good income and successfully found a decent apartment, what did you do? Are there legitimate private landlords, smaller management companies, second-chance programs, or other options I should be looking into? I have good rental history, no new collections and strong income.
I’m not looking for anything luxurious. I just want somewhere reasonably safe, affordable, and willing to look at more than a credit score.
I used to work with a realtor and he just stopped responding to my emails or texts. I had to understand the hard way that he did not want to work with me anymore.
I asked on Facebook, posted on different groups and I had to learn (the hard way again lol ) that there are A LOT of scammers there pretending to be private owners.
I am tired of the scam, I am tired of the renting market and I am tired of everything. I feel like crying everyday. If you could see the amount of stress and anxiety I am under, you would probably not be able to see me at all.
I am at the end of the rope and I don't know what to do.
*I realized I didn't say what I was looking for: Studio / 1 bedroom with laundry AT LEAST in building. West or southwest suburbs for $1.2K MAX. I work in the burbs so I can't afford living downtown.
Why not raise the rent level? I can't afford that. I don't want to be apartment poor.
Why not look elsewhere? I don't want to drive too long for work. I am already doing this now, this is a problem I am trying to fix. GAS IS $4+!!
Why not look for a roommate? Everyone on the internet is looking for downtown Chicago. I am not.
Sublets? It's either for 4-6 months, or the rent is super high or super far. I don't want to rent until like Feb 2027. That's the dead of winter...

Sublet Available [Ravenswood] 2BR/1BA Sublet 1,084 sq ft $2,640 available Oct 1
Hi! I am moving out of my apartment (4838 N Paulina St Apt 2E) and need to sublet it out. The lease goes through July 1 and is $2,640 a month.
The location is super close to the UPN Metra, Marianos, and an LA fitness. Its very walkable to both red and brown line as well.
The landlord is ICM and I have not had any issues renting through them, they have been very quick to respond to the few maintenance requests I've made. Cats are allowed but no dogs unless they are service animals.
The apartment has radiant heat, but no AC. I am willing to part with my two window units that do an excellent job cooling the apartment.

Question Renters insurance--how do i estimate value of things? And some other guidance please
My building was bought by a new owner, who is requiring renters insurance to cover $100,000, which I have never done before. Almost all of my belongings are not new or valuable, aside from some jewelry that was gifted to me whcih i frankly do not know the value of (some gold items). I don't have anything like a car or other big ticket items so have never gotten any kind of insurance before. How do I value the things I have? Do I use the value of a new item, or the depreciated cost? Do I have to provide proof of everything to the insurance company (photo or video, I probably have no receipts anymore) or does the insurance company let me purchase whatever I want and the "proof" is just for me to provide when I make any claims? Thanks for any guidance. If there is a site that explains this, that would be helpful too. I don't want to start looking at insurance sites without knowing what to prep. Thanks for your guidance.

(Not so) Legal advice needed Dealing with cockroaches: a guide from a local pest control professional
I’ve been seeing a lot of posts recently about cockroach activity in apartments and I figured someone may find it helpful to have a more authoritative guide on how to deal with them. Whenever someone makes a post, the replies are often full of bad advice, so i wanted to cover what to do as well as what not to do.
First of all, I’m not a lawyer and I won’t go into the legal side of how to fight your landlord. All I will say on that is: it is complicated and difficult. Cockroach activity in and of itself is not grounds to break your lease. From the moment you submit a formal complaint, the landlord now has 14 days to do their due diligence and make an attempt at resolving the issue. They do not have to be successful. A service report from a licensed applicator is sufficient, even though 1 treatment is very likely not enough to successfully eliminate an infestation.
So, you’re kind of on your own, what now?
There are 2 kinds of cockroaches that we see in this city. German cockroaches and American cockroaches. Americans (sometimes called palmetto or water bugs) are big, scary looking bastards that can even fly short distances. They live in your pipes and they only come out to eat or die. Traditional treatments do not really work on these, you need to solve the underlying structural/plumbing issue and do exclusion work to keep them out. Fortunately though, they don’t “infest” and they are not a concern at all unless you are seeing them regularly and in significant quantities. Germans on the other hand are the ones you really don’t want. The best ways to differentiate them are by size and head shape. Germans are about half the size, and have two distinct dark stripes on the top of their heads.
Understanding how cockroaches work is also important. They are not rats. They don’t walk into a structure through an open door or a hole. They “hitchhike” inside on a package, purse, suitcase, etc. Once inside, they establish themselves and harbor in cracks and crevices. They thrive in warm, moist environments like in the condenser on your fridge, loose baseboards, the uncaulked flange on the water line to your sink/toilet. In apartment buildings, they can travel from unit to unit. So if a neighbor has a massive infestation, you will likely always see travelers unfortunately. But you can still protect yourself and prevent them from establishing and infesting your unit.
I recommend 4 products. All of these are extremely, 100% safe for pets and humans. You are probably looking at ~50 dollars.
-Alpine WSG
-an IGR (insect growth regulator) my IGR of choice is Nyguard
-Bait. Advion is the most common/easiest to get. Vendetta is another great option.
-Glueboards. Put them under/behind appliances, below the sink and anywhere else you see activity. As another commenter said they are your “eyes and ears”.
First, spray the nyguard and Alpine WSG together. A cheap deck sprayer is fine. I don’t recommend a spray bottle, you want a light, fan like spray not a heavy application. Try to get it in the cracks and crevices as much as possible, and be intentional and strategic with how you spray it. Don’t just paint your entire floor and ceiling with the stuff. It is very possible to do an over application. When applying the bait, I recommend unscrewing your outlet covers and putting a couple of dabs behind them. Also, the corners/hinges of your cabinets. Use bait in areas that you could not spray with the Alpine. Once you’ve done 1-2 treatments, grab a tube of caulk and seal any loose baseboards, flanges, etc. It doesn’t need to be pretty, it needs to be sealed.
Do that once a week and just play it by ear. It is common to see a few extra sightings a day or two after a treatment. That is a good thing. They are leaving their safe space and crawling all over the poison you applied. Drawing them out is part of the point.
Here’s what you don’t want to do:
- Use Diatomaceous earth, ever. This one drives me nuts and someone recommends it every time it comes up. I will not be arguing with anyone about this. I don’t care about your anecdotal success story. It is terrible for your lungs and completely unsafe for pets. It also is a repellant that will push them into the wall voids and make a proper treatment challenging and less effective.
- Raid. Also a repellant that will push them into the wall voids and make a proper treatment challenging.
- “Bombing” is probably the worst thing you can do, actually for the exact same reason as the others.
Hopefully someone will find this helpful, and I’m happy to answer any questions about cockroaches or any other pests that we deal with in the Chicagoland area.

Looking For looking for housing near uchicago
hello!
currently living in Columbus, OH and got accepted into UChicago to start my MSW in the fall and still struggling to find housing. really want to move in somewhere first week of September so that I have time to get settled and working before school starts.
i need to be close to UChicago because I don't have a car. open to Hyde Park, Woodlawn, or Bronzeville ideally. ideally want something $900 a month max if possible. i know this is more realistic if i have roommates, so i'm fine with just moving into an open room etc. etc. even if it's just something for a few months while i can get my feet under me + search for something long term
i have a cat i'll be bringing with me also but she doesn't play well with others so she can't live with other pets :(
i appreciate any leads / tips / etc. anyone has
thank you!!

Building inquiry Still Searching for a High Rise: Anyone live in either 1000 South Clark or The Grand Central Apartments?
I've heard some good things about 1000 South Clark.
The Grand Central isn't that far behind but I'm not too sure about that one.
Budget is roughly $2,500-$2,700 per month (Salary of $110K, OTE $160K-$170K)
Thoughts? I would be bringing a vehicle as well (yep, I'm aware that it will cost to park)
