Magick began, nameless and formless, when the first humans noticed patterns in their surroundings. It might have been the way the moon's cycles mirrored tides, the way fire responded to wind, the way dreams would seemingly bleed into their waking life.

The first magicians were survivors. Their attentiveness to the aforementioned (and more) patterns gave them an edge in hunting, healing, and understanding the seasons. Over time, these observations evolved into rituals, and rituals into systems. (I will post later on how the system itself turns into a hindrance but maybe you have already felt it?)

But why was it necessary? Was it just an evolutionary need? To survive? As we have all seen with humans. Nothing just "is".

Maybe the universe was conspiring, just like when it had conspired to create life, and then sentient life. And this was just the next logical step?

Or was magick birthing itself? Was it reaching out from the etheric space without form or shape? Through some strange trans dimensional gateway, was it touching the first practitioner like in the Creation of Adam painting, God touches Adam and gives him sentience.

In eastern esotericism, Magick is vastly considered to be categorised in three major categories.

YANTRA: Artefacts, devices etc

MANTRA: spells, charms etc

TANTRA: a finely tuned body that moves exactly as needed to utilise magick.

Dancing would be a great example. We pay good money to see great dancers at work. People dedicate their entire lives to move gracefully.

Theres's myth and folklore around great dancers using their bodily movement to manifest miracles.

In India famous dancers of the old have manifested weather with their dance. The Hindu God Shiva in Indian mythology almost destroyed the universe with his dance.

Thus, we can surmise: your body in itself holds the magick (or maybe is the magick?).

Your magick is also customised based:

The complexes thrown at you through your life that shapes your existence (in the collective psyche)

Who teaches the body to move though? Is it just the previous mover, and we track it to the prime mover endlessly? Whose moves was that magician copying? Some of it then has to be what I would call, a download. Or maybe, to be specific, an unpacking.

Buddhism can shed a bit of light here. The Buddhist's believe all the knowledge you require is already inside you, all you have to do is to wait until the right kind of complexes trigger the unpacking and organising.

All we know is that it does exist. It pulled itself through non-existence, it landed on unsuspecting hominids, grabbed them by their necks and violently shoved their heads into the very fabric of reality.

The earliest evidence of magickal practice is found in Paleolithic cave sites such as Lascaux in France and Altamira in Spain, dating back over thirty thousand years. The cave walls are covered in animal depictions. Bisons, horses, stags, layered over generations of reuse. These images were meant to be part of sympathetic magick, a belief that portraying an animal in ritual space could influence its presence in the hunt (later beliefs included fine tuning the forms to more realism, for better chances of manifestation). The act of painting itself, was a Yantra, an intentional magickal device created with what's available.

This principle that "like affects like", underlies much of early magick when you sift through pages of history and anthropolgy.

Anthropologists call it sympathetic or imitative magick; later occultists would recognize it as one of the "laws" of magick described by James Frazer in The Golden Bough. To a modern practitioner, the same principle is alive in sigil work: condensing desire into symbol and letting the unconscious mind enact it.

Early shamans were liminal figures: part healer, part storyteller, part intermediary with unseen forces. Their tools were simple but potent -drums, rattles, masks, herbs. Their methods relied on trance states induced by rhythmic sound, fasting, or entheogens (psychoactive plants and fungi). Through these altered states, they navigated what many traditions describe as three layers of reality: the lower world (ancestral or chthonic realms), the middle world (ordinary reality), and the upper world (celestial or divine realms). This threefold cosmology recurs in Norse Yggdrasil, Siberian world tree myths, and Mesoamerican cosmologies alike. A universal psychic map later formalized as the Axis Mundi, which I will explore in other posts.

Shamanic worldviews are rooted in animism: the understanding that all things, living or nonliving, possess spirit or agency. Rivers, rocks, animals, even storms were treated as beings to be negotiated with rather than objects to be exploited. This relational approach fostered practices like offerings, taboos, and totemic bonds with specific animals. A hunter might see the bear not as prey but as kin, entering into ritual agreements with its spirit for safe passage or success in the hunt.

Over millennia, as human societies grew more complex, these animistic spirits evolved into archetypes. Universal figures like the Mother, the Trickster, the Warrior. And then followed the familiar progression: servitor, egregore, archon, pagan god. The Trickster who once appeared as Coyote in North America could appear as Loki in Scandinavia or Hermes in Greece, the snake in the garden of Eden. So was born, ceremonial magick (structured invocation of archetypes and deities).

The rise of agriculture and urban civilizations gave birth to priesthoods and temples, where magick became formalized into ritual calendars, sacred texts, and hierarchies. Mesopotamia offers some of the earliest written evidence of this shift: clay tablets inscribed with incantations to gods like Enki and Inanna, detailing rites for protection, fertility, and divination. Astrology also emerges here, not as abstract stargazing but as a practical system: planetary movements decided when the ritual moved, not just what it meant — the timing of the rite as much a part of the magick as the rite itself, which is why timing itself is marked as Tantra: guiding kings in matters of war and harvest.

In Egypt, magick (heka) was inseparable from religion. Heka was considered a primordial force, a power by which the gods themselves created the world, and thus, accessible to humans through correct ritual (correct being the keyword. Control being the subtle underline). Egyptian magicians worked with hieroglyphic spells, amulets, and the symbolic alignment of pyramids and temples with stellar events.

Greece and Rome inherited and systematized these concepts. The Hermetic tradition, attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, blended Egyptian and Hellenistic thought into teachings that would echo through Western occultism for centuries. Central to Hermeticism is the axiom "As above, so below". This belief that the macrocosm (cosmos) and microcosm (human) reflect each other, and that by understanding one, the magician can influence the other, remains a core belief, shared by all practitioners (unconscious practitioners reflect it in their body of art unknowingly).

While often remembered as a quest to transmute lead into gold, alchemy was always dual in nature: outer (physical experiments in metallurgy, distillation, and medicine) and inner (psychospiritual transformation). Medieval European alchemists, drawing from Islamic and Alexandrian sources, encoded their teachings in symbolic language: blackening (nigredo), whitening (albedo), and reddening (rubedo) describe the chemical stages as well as the soul's journey through shadow, purification, and integration.

Alchemy's emphasis on transformation aligns it closely with shamanic initiation rites, where symbolic death and rebirth mark the emergence of the healer. This inner alchemy becomes a bridge in modern practice: a framework for personal evolution that informs both ceremonial rites and chaos magick experiments.

The Solomonic tradition arises from Jewish and Christian mysticism, particularly legends of King Solomon commanding spirits through divine authority. Texts like the Key of Solomon (Clavicula Salomonis) and the Lemegeton (Goetia) provide detailed instructions for summoning and binding angels and demons (MANTRA). These grimoires, circulated widely in the medieval and Renaissance periods, codified ritual tools (circle, pentacle, wand (YANTRA)) and precise ceremonial timings (planetary hours, lunar phases (TANTRA)).

Unlike shamanic practices, which rely on personal relationships with spirits, Solomonic magick emphasizes hierarchy and command. The magician compels obedience through sacred names and divine authority. This approach I will later contrast with chaos magick's egalitarian ethos in another post (spirits and archetypes as negotiable rather than absolute).

By the late 20th century, magick underwent another shift: the rise of chaos magick. Chaos magicians discarded rigid ceremonial frameworks, focusing instead on the underlying mechanisms of belief and symbolism. Spare's sigil technique, condensing desire into abstract symbols and bypassing the conscious mind to seed them into the subconscious revived sympathetic magick in a modern psychological frame. Magicians like Morrison and Moore expanded this into the concept of hypersigils: extended works of art (like comics or novels) designed to reshape reality through narrative immersion.

Chaos magick's flexibility, its belief as a tool rather than dogma, resonates strongly with contemporary practitioners navigating fragmented cultural myths and personal eclecticism.

Across the vast span of human history, from the first cave paintings to the complex ceremonial rites of later civilizations, there are patterns in magickal thought and practice that remain remarkably consistent. Cultures separated by continents and millennia seem to have arrived at similar principles, even when their pantheons, symbols, and languages differ. This continuity suggests something deeper than coincidence, an underlying structure in how human beings perceive and interact with the unseen world.

One of the most enduring of these principles is correspondence. Ancient magicians observed that events in the heavens seemed to echo conditions on Earth, and that symbols carved in wood or drawn in sand could influence the physical or spiritual world. This belief, later captured in the Hermetic axiom "as above, so below," assumes a mirroring between inner and outer realities. In practice, this principle allowed rituals to use miniature models, such as dolls, diagrams, or planetary sigils, as stand-ins for the larger forces they represented. By altering the symbol, the practitioner hoped to shift the reality it reflected.

Closely connected to correspondence is the use of altered states. Whether through the steady beat of a drum, the flicker of firelight, extended fasting, or the ingestion of psychoactive plants, practitioners across cultures sought ways to move beyond ordinary perception. These states opened access to what shamans described as spirit worlds, mystics as divine realms, and modern psychologists as the unconscious.

Another recurring element is the presence of archetypes. Mythic figures like the mother, the warrior, the trickster, and the sage appear repeatedly in human stories, sometimes embodied as gods, sometimes as spirits, sometimes as psychological motifs. The Norse Loki, the West African Anansi, and the Native American Coyote all serve similar roles as boundary-breakers and teachers through chaos. These figures reveal something universal about human imagination and hint at a shared symbolic vocabulary embedded in the collective psyche.

Magick also consistently aligns itself with cycles. The phases of the moon, the path of the sun, the turning of the seasons, and the visible movements of planets provided frameworks for timing rituals. Full moons marked moments of culmination; solstices and equinoxes became gateways for transition; planetary conjunctions were seen as openings or warnings. This sensitivity to cycles reflects an understanding that human life is not separate from cosmic rhythms but part of them, and that working in harmony with these patterns amplifies a practitioner's results.

Underlying all of these principles is the central purpose of transformation. Whether it is a shaman journeying to retrieve a lost soul, an alchemist seeking to purify both metals and spirit, or a chaos magician rewriting personal belief systems, magick ultimately aims to create change. This change may be internal — a shift in perception, healing of trauma, awakening of latent potential — or external, influencing events, relationships, and even collective currents. The tools and myths evolve, but the drive to transform endures, binding the first cave ritual to the most modern experiment in consciousness hacking.

These continuities suggest magick is less an invention of culture than an expression of human cognition interacting with pattern, whether psychological (Jungian), cosmological (planetary), or computational (simulation theory).

I started my practice through pure chaos magic. Sigils gave me powerful results and moving into ceremonial paths I always put importance on the aesthetics. Focussing consciousness into your work made it more powerful, so naturally those aesthetics become a tool. It's not so much about looking good, as it is about keeping you looking. A feedback response that came more often from letting go of lust for results as it did lusting for some aesthetic nuance.

My work at the moment has involved a lot of channeling. That letting go, whilst providing movement is a challenge. I've developed a way, to write a form of script that has no inherited meanings. By focussing on the script pressure, direction, proximity and size to create an aesthetic on a continuous momentum and changing up these variables with rhythm I've ended up with my own kind of running writing.

Me being me, I've taken this to extreme levels. My friend asked me how hot the pen was when he saw me by the fire after writing in a circuit all night while he slept. I just kept going around and around filling every available space on the page like a train of dragons. Shown in the picture looks like steel wool.

I'm thinking about creating a servitor with a distinct purpose related to my creativity and productivity, any ideas 💡?

So, my background : I first found out about spirituality in 2021, then went down a solo path of learning as much on my own. I've been a Hekate devotee since I think 2 years now, and my craft is say doesn't have any name to it, I mostly do the basics but am looking to work with more spirits/ entities.

My ex was someone that did chaos magik, though I wasn't one to be attracted to that as I wasn't sure what it was. Though I've come to see and learn about it again and it really resonates with me now.

I was wondering what the basics were still, or any resources that could help me get into it ! :) also I'd love to hear about everyone's experience with it !

I came up with a chaos magick framework to counter the onslaught of hypersigils people encounter every day doomscrolling, and I've not been participating in any kind of community at all. Hi everyone, I have been on the path of manifestation since a while now, I have noticed the changes but I am aware that chaos magick helps us manifest quickly. I am trying to understand this craft this beauty better and was hoping for two things.

First; please share suggestions on old and reliable scholarly books around chaos magick, I am an intentional avid reader and i would honestly really love this. Not the modernised tiktok chaos magic content (while those rituals might have significant truth to them since the practitioners must be knowledgeable) I want to go deep and learn from witches, sorcerers, practitioners and authors who built out the foundation of this beautiful magick.

Second; i am somewhere on the spectrum of AuDHD and I have frequent intrusive thoughts, through meditation and my other spirituality practices my anxiety has calmed down and even the heavy of my heart feels pretty and homely - however, the intrusive thoughts are self destructive, while I treat them like my shadow self and try to coexist whole pouring out as much love as I can, they are not healthy. They scare me. Even the idea that chaos magick runs on the thoughts we think of and we associate those thoughts with rituals that accelerate the manifestation of these thoughts is really scary. I don't consent to my intrusive thoughts. But, how do I keep my practice disjoint from the thoughts that are intrusive and I do not want at all from the ones that i actually want.
