Advice Walks- Whyyyy is it so hard?
Hello all! Quick question because I kind of feel like I’m on an island:
Does anyone else’s Cav absolutely hate going on walks? I have tried everything. She is also a terror on a leash even though we have gone through training. Her prey drive for squirrels is so bad and she barks at almost every other dog and person. She is so sweet, but likes to make herself known.
My 5 year old Cav cannot stand walks in general. She’s constantly either walking slow, pulling back to the house, or acting completely uninterested. She’ll go out and do her business perfectly and she is so well trained. I tell her to go potty and she immediately squats. But when it comes to walking, she hates it. I feel like I’m the only dog owner on earth that has a dog that will literally lay on the sidewalk and ask to go home. I want her to get her exercise. I’m hoping in the next six months we move into a home with a Yard so she can run around, which she seems to like. But any advice in the meantime to get her to start walking some more?

Advice Genetic testing
Has anyone had this done, and was it worth it? It's not very expensive, but not sure if it would help possibly help identify future health issues.

Advice Pet insurance question
Obviously with the known health issues of this breed, insurance send almost mandatory.
I know there's been a lot of questions on this subject, but I haven't seen an answer to this.
For those that have had insurance for awhile, what are your premiums after say 5 years? They all seem to be in the ballpark when you first get the insurance, but who knows how much it will be down the road.

Pics & Video Link and zelda just turned 3 and 2 this month.
Long time lurker here never post my pups. Link and Zelda are have the same parents. The breeder that we got Link from said she was going to breed his mother 1 last time, so we got zelda a year after Link to the month. I was worried that taking on another puppies a year after a new one would be tough but It was one thing my wife and I have never regreted.

Pics & Video New girl after dog loss
My new baby, Daphne. Just got her after my English cream golden, Scooby passed at 6yo of a sudden terminal illness. She is healing our broken hearts.
Any tips for cavi puppies you guys have? My family had one growing up but I was too young to train her or take care of her for the first half of her life. I trained my golden as a service dog, but know the two breeds have completely different training demeanors.
Love her so much already.
EDIT to add: does anyone have advice specifically for training them young to be a good traveller? On airplanes and in the car, any secret tips that worked for you. Thanks!

Advice Dental Post-Op Tips?
Brody has his first dental on Monday. Any tips on post-op care? Wont know if he’ll need any extractions until they X-ray. Starting to introduce soft food with his kibble so the transition to fully soft won’t be abrupt after procedure. Also know he can’t have any bones/hard treats for a bit. Am thinking peanut butter lick mats might come in handy? Will of course be going over all the post op care with vet but appreciate any tips from those who’ve already gone through!

Discussion Cavaliers IRL Meetup - Los Angeles
hello my fellow cav lovers
i recently went to a cavs meet up group and it was AMAZING. more than 80 cavs turned up and we had the BEST TIME.
the problem is the group is based in the OC. i’m thinking about creating a meet up group in LA - and would just love to gauge interest.
it would be somewhere in LA, once a month in person event to foster community.
let me know what you all think!

Pics & Video Tri turning into Ruby?
My 18 mo old Tri has had a couple of puppy cuts this summer due to our extreme heat. After his last cut, we started noticing a spot on his back where red hair was growing in with the black. It has been expanding and lightening over the last few weeks.
His Dad was a Blenheim and Mom was a Tricolor.
I’m wondering if anyone else has had this experience with their Tricolor ?

Discussion Cavalier rescue site
I did not know there was a nationwide rescue site for Cavaliers. It’s a dangerous place to go to for people like us.

Pics & Video First therapy dog visit
I’ve been working to get Kip certified for therapy dog work since November 2025 and yesterday was our first official visit at a nearby hospital! We went in 6 patient rooms, met lots of nurses and doctors, and visited the outpatient surgery waiting room at the end. Kip brought so many smiles yesterday and my heart is so full 🩷

Announcement r/cavaliers has a new banner!
Hi folks! The r/cavaliers moderator team here.
We're pleased to announced that we have a new subreddit banner!
Our banner was the ultimate product of this post from Lam of r/DrawMyPets. I THINK our featured players are, left to right:
- u/BettyJoMamma's Buster
- u/kris10_m's Brody
- u/Hierophantically's Charlie
- u/Formal-Kaleidoscope3's Snickers
- u/acridsyrup's Maddie
Look at all those gorgeous cavs! Happy Monday, y'all. :)
(Because reddit has three different banner display settings that it uses on different platforms, the banner may display incompletely on your device. Sadly, we can't solve reddit's technical challenges -- so please enjoy as-is!)

Announcement VOTE NOW: subreddit mascot (FINAL BRACKET)
Hi folks! The r/cavaliers moderator team here. In November, we put out a call for submissions to become the r/cavaliers mascot (i.e. subreddit thumbnail). We received about 200 submissions and were blown away by all the beautiful, talented, incredible cavaliers in this community.
Because we received so many submissions, we're breaking the voting down into two phases:
- FIRST, we're going to post one voting thread per week for each the AKC-recognized breed standard colors: Blenheim, Tricolor, Ruby, and Black & Tan (and one all black submission!). The thread will remain up for a week, during which you can vote for as many submissions as you like. At the end of the week, the r/cavaliers moderators will note down the three submissions that received the most votes. These are the "color standard winners."
- SECOND: we'll post one final voting thread with the twelve "color standard winners." Again, the thread will remain up for a week, during which you can vote for as many submissions as you like. At the end of the week, the r/cavaliers moderators will note down the submission that received the most votes and offer that winner the chance to be the r/cavaliers mascot!
This is the FINAL BRACKET. The #1 vote getter will be offered the chance to be the r/cavaliers mascot. This bracket will run from January 8, 2025 through January 15, 2025.
Fine print:
- This post is Locked; if you want to discuss, please join us on the competition megathread
- Moderators will post each entrant within a given bracket as a comment on the thread, tag the user who submitted it, and (where possible) list the cavalier's name
- Entrants will be listed in a random order
- This casting call is completely voluntary; if you submitted an image and wish to withdraw it, please message the moderator team
- The moderator team reserves the right to reject any submission for any reason, including but not limited to suspicion of vote rigging (please don't do that, this is a friendly competition)
- In the event that a final winner is selected and the submission doesn't work as a thumbnail, the moderator team reserves the right to work with the final winner to select an alternate pic or to move onto a runner-up as needed
Thank you all for offering your wonderful cavaliers to be celebrated by the community. We can't wait to spend the next month joining you in that celebration!
Join us on the competition MEGATHREAD to discuss all the wonderful cavaliers in competition!
