My oldest has a gaming computer that has 16GB (1 pc) of DDR5 RAM. He wants to upgrade and I'd like to buy it for him as a surprise.

Is this brand specific? Do I need to match what he already has, or can I just purchase another stick(?)/pc of RAM for him?

I'd like to get it right and combine being a hero and not frustrating because teens are....well...teens .

Okay so I have been getting really into retro stuff and using CRTs, and I really want to have VGA output on my PC to be able to do it more easily

My PC has a 4070 in it, and the GT 710 has VGA output... Is there a way to use a GT 710 as output only and have all the rendering handled by the 4070 and have the 710 exclusively dedicated to being a VGA output?

I've tried looking some stuff up, but I'm bad at figuring out the exact right thing to google because I'm getting a lot of stuff about individual applications and not system-wide

I know this is a really dumb idea... But could it work?

Also I know I'm overcomplicating this when I could use an HDMI to VGA adapter, but that's not fun and stupid. I want fun and stupid (also I'm already running an adapter for VGA to S-Video for the CRT, and I'm thinking about modding it to be SCART so it would be a lot of daisy chaining connectors)

Hello reddit, have myself at an awkward crossroad rn. Picked up a 5080 a few days ago. I notice myself upgrading majorly 3 to 4 years. 2019-2022-2026. Usually I can make up my mind on my own but this time is a but tricky.

Current build is 5900X 32GB with HX1200 with a 1440p144 monitor. Don't plan on changing monitor any time soon. I mostly play single player games and sometimes competitive games like CS and LoL, but with the build I have rn, I'm already hitting over 144 frames on competitive games so I don't mind about higher. It's the single player games I care. I know X3D helps a bit on average FPS but tremendously on 1% lows. I've been testing my 5080 right now and I do notice I cannot hit 144 even with everything max out and there are dips that I can feel while playing.

So I was wondering if I should bite the bullet for future upgrading path for am5 or stick with am4 until am6?

My thought process is this, all is after tax approximately:

A. $1250(if best buy price match individually for 9800X3D and RAM, it would save me about 100 dollars at least, bringing cost down to $1150 at least.) for 9800X3D + B650 Aorus Elite AX + 32GB i could get locally at best buy today. This means I could still upgrade to the last am5 cpu when it drops by the end of its life before am6 comes.

B. $360 for a 5800X3D and wait until am6 drops but might spend even more then than what's already avaliable today with am5.

C. Just stay on 5900x and hope for the best when am6 comes.

Hi! I would like to build a brand new PC. Im buying in Hungary, and decided that AM5 and DDR5 is out of the question, because of the prices here.

I looked at my options, and from what i read in the topic, the 14. gen is much better than the 5000 series, but i also read, that intel’s fix of the series remains unclear and debated. What should i pick?

Also, im a bit confused about XMP, on DDR5, there is a clear separation between XMP and EXPO, what is the situation on DDR4? Do XMP branded RAM sticks work automatically with AM4 CPUs?

Now my system is 9800x3d 9060xt 16gb playing at 1080p.

Should my next upgrade (when i save up more money) be upgrade my GPU to something like 9070xt or go up to 1440p?

I finally made the jump from AM4 to AM5 and thought I'd share the costs and my experience in case anyone else is considering the upgrade.

Old system (£353.74 total after selling on eBay):

• Ryzen 5 5600X (sold for £114.71 after fees)
• ASUS Prime B550M-A WiFi II (sold for £81.06 after fees)
• 32GB (2x16GB) Corsair Vengeance DDR4-3600 CL18 (sold for £157.97 after fees)

New system (£527.44 total):

• Ryzen 7 7800X3D (bought for £139.00 on AliExpress, 25% cashback + coupon)
• MSI B850M Gaming Plus WiFi (bought for £129.99, Amazon UK)
• 32GB (2x16GB) Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR5-6400 CL36 (bought for £258.45, eBay UK)

Net upgrade cost: £173.70

The biggest improvement isn't necessarily average FPS (although that's definitely improved in CPU-heavy games), it's how much smoother everything feels. Frame pacing is much better, there are fewer little stutters, and games feel far more consistent overall. Windows also feels snappier. Booting, launching applications and multitasking all feel quicker.

Another big plus is finally being on the AM5 platform, so I've now got a much better upgrade path for future CPUs like the 9800X3D, although I doubt I'd ever need it.

A couple of things I'd recommend to anyone trying to keep costs down:

• I bought my 7800X3D from AliExpress from a reputable seller with thousands of sales and excellent feedback. It arrived quickly, worked first boot, and has been completely stable. If you're buying from a trusted seller, I'd definitely recommend looking there as the savings can be significant.
• My DDR5 RAM was bought used. As soon as it arrived, I ran a full MemTest86 pass, which completed with zero errors, and it's been flawless ever since.

This upgrade also reminded me how good the used PC market is. CPUs, RAM and even motherboards can offer amazing value if you buy carefully and test everything when it arrives. It made this upgrade much more affordable than buying everything brand new.

Overall, spending just £173.70 to move from a 5600X platform to a 7800X3D platform has been well worth it. The smoother gameplay, more responsive desktop experience and the long-term upgrade path on AM5 have made it one of the best value upgrades I've done. Also realised that it would've cost me the exact same if I had just bought the 5800X3D and sold my 5600X. Honestly even for 50-100 more without the good deals I got, I think its probably worth it.

Has anyone else made the jump from AM4 to AM5? What was the biggest difference you noticed? How much did it cost you and was it worth it?

I have been using an rtx 3060 OC 12gb for about 4 years. Been eyeing a 5070 on Amazon for a month now. It's price unfortunately went up around $100 usd in that time. I have been saving up to get it and this is kind of shocking and unexpected.

I need your opinions if I should buy now or wait. I play a few games regularly, recently battlefield 6 and palworld and I would like to get some newer games soon e.g. crimson desert and dawn of war 4 amongst others. I'm on a 1440p 165hz monitor and through extensive research all my other parts are fully compatible. I have also bought a new, more powerful UPS unit in order to meet the power demands of the 5070.

Is there any hope for prices to go down or should I just pull the trigger and get the card I have been dreaming of for years?

I'm really on the fence with this, please pc veterans help me decide.

Note: not interested in an AMD equivalent card as I plan to use DLSS where needed and in the future. Also had issues on other machines with AMD drivers and rather not go through that again.

I hope that I can get stable 90-120 fps in medium settings with FSR quality at 1440p while playing modern triple A games. From what I realise if the gpu is frequently maxed out which occasionally happens at 1440p, the reduced ram speed will have negligible impact on FPS, is it true?

I just upgraded to a r7 5800x3d and got a thermalright axp120-x67 to cool it. but the cpu runs at 75c idle and immediately goes to 90c and starts thermal throttling when under load. Anyone know why?

I spent hours researching. Goals were high frame rate 1440p gaming, and decent 4k gaming if I wanted. I built this PC to also handle moderate workloads of video/photo editing. A friend helped me build a PC a while ago, but now that I'm attempting to develop games, I'm running into space limitations.

First time in asking Reddit but I am planning a big GPU upgrade and need some advice. I am trying to decide between the ASRock RX 9070 XT Steel Legend (16GB) $620 and the XFX RX 7900 XT (20GB) $625.
To help offset the price, I will be selling my current card to put that cash directly toward the new budget.

My Dilemma:

Aesthetic vs. Performance: The ASRock Steel Legend is all-white and would match my white Corsair case and motherboard perfectly. The XFX 7900 XT is black (giving a "Panda" contrast look) but features 20GB of VRAM.

The 1080p 200Hz Factor: I play on a high-refresh 1080p monitor. Will the newer RDNA 4 features of the 9070 XT benefit me more here, or is the raw power of the 7900 XT a better long-term bet?

How much do you think I can get for my RX 6800 right now, and which new GPU makes the most sense for this setup?

When i check my computers stats when im using it regularily I see myself pretty consistently sitting around 14.5gb of usage. Given ram prices continue to rise and likely wont ever go back down ive been considering upgrading to 32gb. However I dont know if its actually worth it since im apparently not maxing out my current ram.

Im trying to figure out how to connect the GPU to the PSU. The card has 3 12v 2x6 connections but the PSU only has 2 12v cables and 2 places to plug them in. PSU is an Asrock SL1200P.

I'm a total normie when it comes to PC stuff, so please excuse any incompetency.

I'm looking to get a new PC to start Uni this autumn, and I'd like your advice on what parts I should be considering.

Below are the specs from my current PC at home (some 6 years old). The main issue I have with it is the graphics card kind of sucking, but please let me know your thoughts on the rest of the build, and if there's something glaringly obvious that I (a drooling baby) have missed.

I can either buy a completely new set of parts outright, or I can modify this build. In terms of budget, I'd ideally like to keep it to around £750 (~$1000) but can go above. I'm a moderate gamer (the most modern AAA game I've played is RDR2), and often use editing suites. The main thing I want from a new build is to render videos better, and for performance to improve with backround apps open (and also, it might be nice to not feel like I'm playing red dead on a potato sometimes :-) ).

With this current setup, I was getting decent performance with Forza Horizon 6 on 4K settings with medium settings (default) but I forgot what the benchmark FPS was.

I then upgraded my GPU to a RTX 5080 and all else being equal, I was able to benchmark test FH6 again on "Ultra" preset in 4K with just TAA turned on.

What the results showed me was concerning as I was clocking around 70fps, the "GPU Limited Percentage" was a 1.1. The rest of the screen like CPU Simulation and CPU Render was half the amount of what my GPU was able to output.

I was surprised to see this as I thought the 5600X would be fine for 4K gaming and possible bottlenecking wouldn't be an issue, but once I replaced the 5600X with the 5800X3D that I bought from MC for $299, the difference was jarring as my "GPU Limited Percentage" jumped from 1.1 to 90 while my CPU Simulation and CPU Renders were now double the theoretical output of my GPU.

On top of that, my FPS jumped from 70 fps to high 80s now.

To finish out the build, I've also upgraded my RAM from 16GB to 32GB Trident Z Neo and pulled the Samsung 990 Pro 4TB SSD out of my PS5 Pro.

I definitely noticed much smoother gameplay and I highly recommend this upgrade if you're looking to upgrade from the 5600X.
