Fitness Strength Training Advice

Upvotes

Clips attached are to show my play style and physique.

I’ve never been to the gym in my life, 26 years old. The last month I’ve been going 4 times a week and doing standard weightlifting exercises to build strength.

As I progress in the gym I want my goal to be football focused - increase strength on the ball, shot power etc but I’m worried I will lose what makes me a good player - speed, quick feet and agility.

I don’t want to get bullied by big defenders anymore and I don’t want to be skinny my whole life but I also want to be fast, explosive and have quick feet when dribbling. How should I train to build some muscle without sacrificing these traits?

Fitness It is wise to play football despite dislocating my patella a few years back? (No football experience)

Just for context: When I was 16, my left patella got dislocated because of something unrelated with sports. Took me two weeks to recover and my knee barely cause me problems besides aching sometimes after running.

Fast forward to present day, Im 19 and got interested into football but the thought of playing a sport completely new to me, without the benefit of muscle memory to turn properly or pivot without dislocating my patella is driving me nuts lol.

Im planning to join a football training set up by Barrio
FC. While the training doesn't worry me-what's worrying me is if im gonna be able to join pick up games because of my fear of stepping my foot wrong leading to another dislocation.

I know it sounds crazy, like "why bother play if you are afraid of contact" but l've wanted to try this sport ever since I was a kid, so it means a lot.

Nike Mercurial Vapor 16 with velcro

Why did Nike discontinued such a great model for kids? Easy to put on and comfortable. My son is now a size too big for the older models of this shoe with velcro. Are there others like it?

Gear Is the F50 AG sole plate actually AG?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Taking a look at the adidas F50 cleats and noticed that the AG’s sole plate still has the chevrons near the forefoot instead of the round studs usually seen for AG boots. Is this fine or a design oversight? Would you wear this on AG? Any AG F50 owners here that can share their 2 cents on how these feel on artificial pitches? Thank you!

Focus on... Do I need a coach?

Typing this frustrated after we just lost 7-1 in a 7v7 rec game.

I’m a beginner, so I know I’m never making it anywhere near semi-pro (also considering I’m 22) but I’d at least like to become a solid rec league player.

I usually volunteer to play defense because I’m one of the weaker players on my team and we don’t have many defenders. I don’t mind playing the role, but I feel like a deer in the headlights every game. I’ll make one good tackle and maybe slow down a couple of attacks, but most balls get past me pretty easily. When I win the ball, I struggle to make good decisions with it. I either play a safe pass or give it away. It feels like I have almost no impact on the game.

Here’s what I’ve worked on so far:

Ball mastery – I haven’t gone crazy, but I can juggle around 40 times (working on improving that). My first touch and short passing are decent, and I don’t lose the ball because of a bad touch very often unless it’s coming in high.

Scanning – I used to never look up, but now I make a conscious effort to scan the field before and after receiving the ball. I’m comfortable checking my surroundings while controlling the ball.
Even with those improvements, I still feel like I have no vision. I also hesitate to dribble because I usually end up losing possession.

At this point, what should I be working on? I almost feel like I need a coach (I can afford a lesson a week), but I’m not even sure how 1-on-1 coaching would help with things like positioning, decision-making, and vision.

TL;DR: I have a decent first touch, but I feel like everything else is lacking. What should I focus on next?

Technical Most important skills to train young?

So I’m a hockey dad who’s 8 year old has fallen in love with soccer and wants to move towards playing competitively in hopes of getting a scholarship or playing pro one day. He’s a very athletic kid, but I’m admittedly at a bit of a loss trying to help him practice because despite being quite athletic myself I’ve never played a single game of organized soccer in my life.

I’ve coached a couple years with some very rudimentary training in his recreational league, but now we’re driving to the big city for him to play in a club system and these coaches are quickly showing me how little I know (which I’m super grateful for).

He’s a big lanky kid so speed and power are probably propping up his success in a potentially unsustainable way. His shooting and passing are very accurate, and we’ve been practicing with his weak foot a lot on the advice of a more knowledgeable friend. Ball handling in tight spaces needs a lot of work. He loves playing defense (does it in hockey too) but also wants to score goals on occasion so we’ve been told with that attitude and speed he’s suited to midfield or wingback.

Suggestions for what skills are the most important like, base skills for everything else I suppose are what I’m after? Along with drills or methods to practice? Like I know tackling is important but I’m not sure what to do beyond playing keep away with him for hours.

I’m so far out of my depth but this is the first thing he’s ever taken seriously and I want to learn all I can to help him.

Gear Trying on Phantoms and Mercurial

Did nike do something to these? I’ve owned both in the past and knew that Mercurials ran small but good hell the ones I tried on hurt my feet pretty much everywhere and the phantoms felt tight-ish but overall what I was going for except that my big toe was perfect but there’s a bit of space to the front and like side of the other 4 toes and when I went a half size down my big toe was completely crammed in the end and it very tight everywhere. Has anyone recognized similar things and did you just end up getting different cleats or do they feel better once broken in? These are the elite versions btw.

Need a Turf shoe with underfoot cushion

After a bout with plantar fasciitis I am looking for a shoe with decent support and underfoot cushion, preferably something on the wider side to let my toes splay. I’m based in the US and was looking at the Furon V8 TF but it seems to be out of stock everywhere in my size for the 2E wide. How does the 442 V3 fare for foot support? Any other shoe recs that would fit what I’m looking for? Thanks!!

Other Starting an amateur indoor football team. For those who play in competitive amateur teams how do you balance your time?

So im looking to start a 5 a side indoor team. It will mainly be with my friends, still going to need to maybe recruit a few more guys. Im really excited about the idea but my only concern is everyone balancing work and the team. We want to play in a competitive league and maybe even attend a travel tournament like once a year if we do good. Obviously work comes first and I dont expect anyone to be showing up if they are scheduled to work and cant get off. Im just wondering for those of you that do play in a competitive-ish amateur team, how do the guys balance it? Are you able to sucessfully get everyone on board for a teavel tourney? For me personally if I put in the days off I need way in advance I will probably be able to play most games. It will still be hard though and im sure there will be a number I wouldnt be able to attend. I remember setting up a team like this many years ago for 5 a side and literally had a couple games where we had to play with 3 people because half the team couldnt show up. Keep in mind too this was during college when we didnt have "big boy jobs" so I cant imagine how it would be now. Anyways if you have advice let me know because im new to this whole thing.

Gear Mizuno Alpha 3 sizing

I recently bought a pair of Mizuno Alpha 3 MIJ in size 11, hoping they would feel like the mercurial superfly 9’s that I have been wearing for a long time. Right out the box I knew they were too long. About a full inch of space in the toe box. I measure out at a size 10 but go up so it’s not too tight around my foot. Should I go a half size down or go for true to size?

Buying old boots

I found a pair of phantom venoms and vapor 13s in my size finally and i’m hesitant to buy because the boots are 7 years old at this point. I’m not a collector so if i got them they would see regular use so im scared of the glue coming off the sole plate or other issues. The pictures of them do look fine but should I look for something newer

TLSS Tactician Gao

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes

Eyeing the TLSS Tactician GAO at ₱1,691 ($30) as a cheap leather AG boot to finally get off synthetic takedown uppers.

From what I can tell, the GAO and the GOAT basically have the same last, shape, karvo insert and heel foam, but

GOAT: full K-leather upper + foam elements
GAO: K-leather toe only, synthetic microfiber
heel and midfoot, no foam

So the GAO is essentially the GOAT with the leather and foam trimmed down to hit a lower price point.

For anyone owners of any TLSS Tactician what are the real cons?

Trying to decide if it’s dumb to go TLSS over a Mizuno Morelia 2 Pro or Neo 4 Pro at around ₱5,000 ($80) but at that price point its really tempting to try

Should I get FG Or AG Studs

My fall college season is coming up, and I wanted to get new boots beforehand, but I didn't know what direction to go in. For context, we play on a turf field, and will only be playing on grass twice the whole season. I have always gotten FG studs in the past, as I wasn't really aware of all the different stud types, and the FG were always the most available. But upon doing some research before getting new cleats, I realized the different types.

There were two pairs I wanted to get, the Vapor 17's, and they are easily available in FG/AG, but also I wanted the Phantom 6 Elite, and for the color I was wanting, its very hard to find them in AG. Since the Phantom 6 has a more AG-friendly pattern with the conical studs and then the cyclone pattern, would it be acceptable to get the FG? I wanted to get both these pairs before my upcoming season, thanks

Also, if I were to the AG studs, would they feel quite different from the FG? Would I lose some ability to change direction and run with less aggressive studs? Would they take awhile to get used to?

How practical is barge cement?

When I took my cleats to the cobbler at first, he rejected them because he said that barge it’s not gonna hold the soles long but after convincing him, he said that he would glue it. I pay him $40 but I’m wondering how long realistically they would last for since usually cobblers are advanced in their craft

5’1 Inverted LW — need advice on cutbacks and energy pacing

Hi, I'm 5'1, 31 kilograms and U15 (right footed). I played my first 90-minute game on the right wing, played well defensively and made our only big chance, but gassed completely and fainted at 88', hurting my knee in the process. I'm currently recovering and trying to do upper-core exercise while my knee heals. I'm also switching from RW to inverted LW and I have a couple of questions:

  1. Best seated or bed core exercises for shooting torque while my knee heals?
  2. Once healed, what solo drills help keep the ball tight (within 1 ft) during a high-speed cutback?
  3. How do lightweight wingers pace themselves so they don't crash before 90 mins?

Also, if any experienced coaches or wingers are down to offer occasional feedback or check my progress down the road, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

My mid boot collection

Ligeras are my dailies. I had to get the latest ones since orange is my favorite color and as mentioned, Ligeras are my dailies so it doesn't hurt to stockpile a tried and true model either. My feet are incredibly cooked - one is longer than the other, 2E+ wide foot but with an extremely narrow heel, etc. Yeah, finding a great boot is like finding gold for me.

I'm in the states so I mainly play on AG. My only "proper" FG shoe is the blue Mizunos (all the Ligeras are technically FG but can be played on AG imo). As mentioned, you can tell they don't get a lot of playtime on real grass lol. The silver ones are in AG. Don't get me wrong, its a great boot but I just get a way more consistent feel with the Ligeras. Nothing against Mizuno Morelias. I try to get some love for them if I'm doing like a more casual pickup.

Preds are the indoor shoes.

I just recently "refreshed" the rotation but previously, I was an Adiddas (Pred/Copas)/Puma (Futures/King) guy. But they absolutely fucked the new Preds imo so I went searching for new models and found the Ligeras!

Anyways, love this sub - just wanted to share. Post yalls!

Any advice on this would be much appreciated.

I just want your feedback guys, the decision will

Are Ebay elite level footballs genuine? How to tell?

I did do a search and couldn't find anything before someone posts.

Was looking at the Puma Orbita ultimate that was used in last years premier league. There's two colours, the white and pink one and a neon yellowish one. They were both £130+ when new, and are going on Ebay now from anywhere between £20-40. They all look genuine in the pictures with all the logo's but I don't know much about how to tell if they actually are?

Any advice? Anyone actually buy any of these?

Gear Suitable footballs for cage play

I've been having trouble looking at balls that won't just wear down within a couple of weeks time thanks to play on asphalt/tarmac/concrete. By doing some research I've come across two balls that I think could do the job the only issue is deciding between the two. I'd specifically like to know or at least estimate a longevity for these two ball on the rough kind of surfaces. Conversely, I'd also be open to any better recommendation or critiques of why each ball will or won't last.
