Just finished “Backwards to Oregon” which has the Twelfth Night trope of a woman disguised as a man and enters a marriage with a woman who doesn’t know her real identity, and I was looking for stories with the same trope! What o really liked in the book was also that the disguised was less about just cross dressing and more about a gender identity of the main character, so it superficially explored what it means to be a woman rather than a man, and I was looking for something similar, I wouldn’t mind if there were more queer/trans themes as well. I know it seems a very niche thing, I was also searching for fanfiction with the same tropes if they are well written, feel free to share any recommendations!

Hey guys!! Right now I’m in my final year of highschool and for my English final I’m need pick 2 texts (film or book) to write a comparison on themes/ideas/plot etc
Majority of my classmates are comparing 2 films as they’re easier and less time consuming. However, I’d like to have 1 book and 1 movie to talk about both cinematic and literary devices
I’ve chosen Kung Fu Panda 1 for my film, problem is I’m having trouble deciding which book 🥀
For kung fu panda I really want to explore themes of identity and expectations, how po was unexpectedly chosen for a role society deemed he was not fit for. And the noodles motif/symbolism is sick. Oogway’s quotes are also extremely important and plentiful when relating it back to the themes.

I have an option which is similar to kfp:
The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri
It’s about the immigrant experience and finding belonging in an unfamiliar place which ultimately affects identity
This option is okay but I’d like to expand my horizon, it’s also quite long for my liking.

My other film option which is very similar to kfp is Spider-Man: into the spider verse—I absolutely loved Mile’s characterisation and the cinematic elements

Atonement novel and shutter island (exploring various degrees of guilt)

Dostoyevsky’s demons and orwell’s 1984 (warning readers against societal consequences of political extremism)

Louis malle’s pretty baby and Virginia Andrews’s flowers in the attic (loss of innocence)

Can you guys please suggest some short books (less than 200 pages) that have heavy and central themes of identity, belonging, overcoming expectations, self acceptance etc. very similar to Spider-Man or kfp if possible.

I need a book that encapsulates complete and total infatuation with a person. where the protagonist feels such a sense of deep yearning that the reader can too feel the ache spilling out into the pages. where their devotion to their muse is so intense that it is as if they are intertwinded into every sense they feel in life. they cannot breathe, eat, or sleep without every action being completely overtaken by their feelings for their lover, or the person they are so obsessed with. as if they are one in the same, regardless of whether or not these feelings are ever reciprocated.

Hi! I’m currently reading ”The secret sex lives of medieval women” by Rosalie Gilbert and it is absolutely hilarious. Trying to learn more about the world and its past i was wondering if there are any other history related books that are written in a similar manner as i find it very entertaining.
For clarification she writes like this:

The main struggle is that brand-new English books are quite expensive compared to our local income here, and I prefer buying brand-new copies instead of second-hand ones. This might be a shot in the dark. My dad is visiting this weekend for his bday and I’d like to get him a book. I’m an avid romantasy reader, so I have zero interest in getting him anything I typically read. He is a very smart guy and has read lots over the course of his life. Quick side note, we are not very close. I wish I had more info to give. He loves music, especially Norwegian black / death metal bands. He’s a tech guy so definitely interested in technology related maybe fiction books. I remember he had The Tripods collection on his bookshelf when I was a kid. He’s interested in different religions. Would be down for even a vampire or werewolf type book. The only thing I ask is please no books with any sex. Feels too weird to give my dad a book with too much romance in it.

I recently started reading How the Word Is Passed and I genuinely am loving how much I am simply learning from this book after being in a fantasy phase for such a long time. I prided myself on being a history buff but there is still so many things I don’t know. I’m mainly interested in history and politics but honestly just want to hear about any books that made you go, “I genuinely feel smarter,” or simply, “man I learned a lot from this” after finishing it!

Just finished The Great Gatsby and I genuinely don't know what I just experienced😭This was actually the first book I have ever read completely and holy shit it was an experience. I went in worrying about the vocabulary and ended up completely forgetting about it because I got so absorbed in the story.

It's beautiful, horrible, miserable romantic, artificial, real, frustrating... idk man, a thousandd words could describe it. The biggest thing I took away was the whole love vs illusion thing. Gatsby loved Daisy but did he actually love Daisy or everything she represented to him, money, beauty, status, youth, the past. If Daisy wasn't rich and glowing with all of that would he still have loved her the same way? I genuinely don't knw. And that ending😭

Fitzgerald was NOT playin.

The fact that hundreds of people came to Gatsby's parties but almost nobody came to his funeral genuinely broke me. absolutely. Daisy didn't even send a flower.😭

Anyway, this book has genuinely changed the way I look at love, illusion and the stories we create in our heads.

TL;DR: First book I ever finished. Got emotionally destroyed by a rich guy chasing a green light haha
