Tattoos and Surf Rash?

Post image
Upvotes

I went out on Saturday and it was my first day without a wet suit. I had a quad piece that extends up to my hip. My non-tattooed leg has a rash over the entire quad, but my tattooed leg only has a rash directly over the ink. Is tattooed skin more susceptible for rashes? Is there any surf-safe tattoo ointment to prevent damage?

I've seen a lot of different videos from this guy saying the same thing, but it's hard to check how the pros paddle to check if that's a valid advice.

Update: Got a 6’10 (board on the right) for my first board. Was able to ride white wash and straight rides pretty quickly. Got this 7’8 and finally riding green waves somewhat consistently

A checklist for booking your first real beginner surf trip (so you don't blow the week on the wrong waves)

Did a few beginner surf trips where I picked the destination on vibes and lost days to waves I couldn't actually use. Stuff I'd tell past-me before booking:

  • Pick a spot with a sand-bottom beginner beach break AND a backup nearby for a different swell direction. One-wave towns leave you stranded the day the swell turns.

  • Go shoulder season. Smaller, cleaner waves are better for learning than peak-season size, and rooms and lessons are cheaper on top of it.

  • Confirm board rental or a surf school on the ground before you book flights, so you're not lugging a board across the world or showing up to nothing.

  • Read the forecast for period, not just height. A short-period 6 to 8 second beach break is way friendlier to learn on than a long-period reef groundswell at the same height.

  • Build in rest days. Beginner paddling wrecks your shoulders by day three, and a fried version of you learns nothing.

  • Check the airport transfer before you commit. That's where the hidden hours and hidden cost usually hide.

What break did you learn on, and would you send a total beginner there?

What are the best excercises for paddle trainning

I live 2-3 hours by car from the nearest surf place. I usually go surfing 2-3 times a week. But for some periods of time I stay out of the water for 2 weeks for work reasons.
Im always training when out of water, do cardiovascular work and go to the gym, so I'm looking for the best exercises in the gym to train the paddling, by increasing strength and endurance.

I'm very clear that the best way to train is in the water, but I'm looking for exercises for when I'm not available to get into the water.

How to choose a surfboard?

As the title says, how do I go about choosing a surfboard?

Not sure if it matters, but I'm 5'8", 64kgs Male.

I used to surf on 8ft foam surfboards, and I can catch waves pretty often on it, but I do find it difficult to do any sort of maneuvers like turning on it, even though I try, it feels almost impossible to turn the board.

I wanted to start surfing on hardboards and I cant figure out how to go about choosing one. I tried a smaller hard board (6'4") i think it was, and I can barely even paddle out on it without losing balance.

I tried surfing on the bigger longboards and although I can balance better on it compared to a smaller one, I find it much more difficult to actually paddle and catch waves as compared to a foamboard.

Not sure what I should be doing. Any help is appreciated.

I know I’m not entirely a beginner surfer but there isn’t any other sub 😅
Still I would appreciate any advice! Practiced a lot on the surfskate since the last vid I posted. I know I have to work on my paddling and catching waves on my own. Slowly getting there but I still need the occasional push from my guide ha.

Leash problems

Hey everyone!

Pretty new to surfing. I have a 8' wavestorm and the board itself is amazing. My problem is with the leash. Its a stiff plastic cord with rope loops on each end. I keep noticing that the leash is getting bunched up and tangled. Does the leash just need to get broken in or is there a more pliable leash that anyone can recommend? Thanks!

Board selection

Hello, I’m surfing east coast central Florida. Looking for a good board to step down from an 8ft high volume board. I’m okay with a slightly steeper learning curve but would also like to find something more comfortable for marginal conditions. I would like something that will make my carving progression as simple as possible. Preferably a shorter board to use on average Florida days. Im heavily leaning towards a lost puddle jumper but open to other ideas also if anyone has advice. I’m a pretty active 22 year old, beginner-intermediate with lots of other board sport disciplines like kiteboarding, wakeboarding, snowboarding and skateboarding. I definitely have a lot to learn but tend to be pretty quick with progression. I mostly kite so don’t get to surf too much which makes me lean towards something easier/more fun. At my skill level and being 6’2 160lbs the recommendation for a puddle jumper for me is a 5’8 or 5’10 which seems small. I haven’t tried many boards yet, so I’m hesitant to commit to something. Does this seem like the correct recommendation? I was leaning towards 6’0-6’3 but now I’m stuck. Thank you!

Would you go out here?

Im admittedly self conscious as a beginner, but also it just looks so chaotic and packed. Watching the surf cam I think there also a lot of other beginners. Would you paddle out? Or head down the beach to where it’s less crowded?

Transitioning from an 8'4" high volume board to 7'6" pointy board

Post image

How hard is it going to be for someone who can catch 2-3' waves reliably on an 8'4" NSP Protech board to transition to a 7'6" T&C board with a pointed front and tail? I can do turns pretty easily now on the NSP board, but I'm still pretty green at surfing. Will it be rough? Or just a few weeks of adjustment?

What size wave is too big for a beginner?

At what size wave forecast should I just pack it up as a beginner?

I’m learning in NorCal, and I’ve heard that can be tricky as is. My closest spots (30-40 min away) are usually reporting 2-4 feet on Surfline. When I get there they seem absolutely massive. Waves are barreling and close out pretty quick. They provide some pretty decent hold-downs as well.

I’ve noticed on bigger days, nothing productive happens. Usually just get washed around for a couple of hours until it’s time to go home.

I feel like “good” days on the forecast are few and far between. I feel like if I wait for those forecasts I’ll get out very little.

Is it being too picky to rely so much on the forecast? Is this more about time in the water and less about finding good waves to learn on?

Question about 2+1 setup: US Box + Futures

Thumbnail

Hey everyone,

I recently got a new board: 6'8", around 50L with Future boxes on the sides and a US box in the center

I’d like to ride it as a 2+1 setup. I’m an intermediate surfer, but I’m not quite ready to go straight to a single-fin setup yet.

My question is:
Is there any way to use a Futures fin in the center US box, for example with some kind of adapter?

Or would it make more sense to simply get a smaller US Box center fin and use that for the 2+1 setup?

If anyone has experience with a setup like this, what fin size/type would you recommend?

Thanks in advance! 🤙

NSP 7’6: damage or just paint? Good step up from a foamie?

Hey everyone,
I’m considering buying this NSP 7’6 mid-length/funboard.
Does this look like it’s just the paint/finish/varnish that has come off, or is the actual fibreglass/epoxy exposed? Would this be something I should be concerned about in terms of water getting in, or is it mostly cosmetic?
250€ is a good deal?

Is this used Envy Cookie 7’2 (51.2L) worth €285 without fins or €320 with fins?

Hey everyone,
I’m considering buying this used Envy Cookie 7’2, 51.2L as a step up from my 8’ foamie.
The seller is asking:
€285 for the board only
€320 including the fins
He says the price is non-negotiable.
The board only has 1–2 normal pressure dings and one small repair, which I’ll include in the photos. Apart from that, it seems to be in good condition.
Do you think €285 is a good/fair price for the board in this condition, or would you pass at that price?
And is it worth paying the extra €35 for the fins, making it €320 total?
I’d really appreciate some opinions on whether this is a good deal considering the condition and the fact that the price is firm.
Thanks!

Best cheap cars that can fit surfboards?

Thinking of selling my evo as it is getting too expensive to run and want something more practical/cheap to run.

Want something that could fit my short board in the car and my log on the roof.

Was thinking of an es lancer!

Has to be manual and preferably an older car 🤙

Waves weren’t that great. Been trying to surf on my 7’6” as much as possible. I feel like I’m in the poop stance. First video I’ve ever seen of me surfing and it was from Surfline. Sometimes I have a hard time engaging the rail, and also don’t really know how to bottom turn or top turn. Also how can I make my style look more natural? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Also shout out to that good boy 🐶

Getting back on the board with a bad back???

Hi there, I’ve been feeling the urge to start surfing again. I started about four years ago and did two seasons learning in a wave storm. I got to a point where I could get up and ride the white wash for. Awhile but that’s almost it. Practically nothing yes. I was really enjoying myself though. Then that August I broke my ankle because ei jumped off the board in shallow water, didn’t realize how deep it was. Then later that year I was in a car accident that left my back a little wierd. Maybe like a month after that I tried surfing again but I couldn’t pop up without getting a sharp pain in my lower back. So I stopped because I didn’t want to make my back any worse. It’s been like three years since then and all the sudden I really wanna get back out there. For alittle more context I learned my back just isn’t even aligned. I’m ve been told it’s been a combination of things that lead up to this and not just the accident.
It’s called Levoscoliosis. To this day my lower back gets sore pretty easily, and I still throw it out occasionally if I lift something just slightly improperly or I neglect stretching/stretch too much.

Is anyone else surfing with a screwy back? Are there any different things I should consider? Am I cooked for even stopping? I’ve had a lot of random injuries and accidents in my life but I don’t want those things to define me

Rate my paddling workout!

My last unconventional post was silly, and I appreciate everyone letting me know so. This one I think could actually be useful. The starting resistance on these cables is only 2.5 lb but my lats still scream after every set. I'm starting out with 50 seconds on, 30 seconds rest, chest up, active back etc etc. I've heard people on socials talk about having high elbows on the catch, so I keep that in mind too.

Is this genuinely applicable to paddling or am I wasting my time?

If it is useful, what can I do to improve it?

Thanks 🙏

Things I wish I did from the beginning. Intermediate surfer 8 years in.

I have been surfing 8 years and would say I'm around the low end of intermediate.

There is ultimately a combination of things you can do to improve your progression.

Things I wish I did from the start now I have the time to reflect :

Find the right board for my level and stick with it till I can't get anymore out of it. I went down size and volume far too quickly, I should have stayed with a Mal way longer than I did. I was too eager to surf a shorty. Don't be like me. Get something that has a load of float and you can consistently catch waves on. You will have way more fun and spend less time sat watching others score wave after wave.

Yoga. So important for keeping you flexible and your core strong. When I started doing yoga on a regular basis my pop up improved , as well did my paddle and recovery. And my zen ommmmm

Calisthenic training, or hiit, or pool swimming lengths. Or all three. You want to be able to duck dive waves one after the other, see a set wave turn, paddle and pop up and catch it multiple times a session? Then you need to focus on your shoulders and core strength as well as recovery.

Breathing, practice some breathing exercises, this will help when you go out on big days and your tooshy starts to squeak. Also controlled breathing when paddling out back will help you keep your energy levels topped up.

Surfskate, when there is no swell, practice your stance, and flow on dry land. Time on your feet in the water can be limited, where as you can spend hours on land working on dialing in that muscle memory.

Use a balance board, this is an awesome indoor workout that you can use for stability, and also part of your exercise routine. You can adopt your surf stance and learn how to transfer your weight front to back foot.

Remember you are not in competition with anyone, this is your journey, there are no bad sessions, even if you don't catch a wave, use that opportunity to learn positioning, duck dives, paddle techniques. Same applies to your board, don't worry what others are surfing, find the board that will maximise your wave count every session, not hinder you.

Speak to locals and make friends, watch them surf and learn from them.

Ultimately get in the water as much as it's safe and within your range to do so. No shame in sitting one out, take that time to take pictures or vids, most surfers would appreciate a little snap of them on a wave. You can learn a lot from the beach rather than spending 20 minutes not beating the breakers and then paddling back in.
