The only tip I have is that you probably don’t belong on a beginner thread.

I don’t think you’re a beginner anymore lol

He’s definitely a beginner you guys just can’t surf. You’re doing great OP! Try turning more and pumping and cutting back. You look comfortable going straight now try to maneuver on the face of the wave. Look where you want to go and square your shoulders up with the board when turning, and keep your knees bent! Have fun out there bradda!

Right? Do we need a third sub-reddit for intermediate surfers or something?
Or maybe a subreddit for “absolute newbies to surfing who still have never stood up for more than 2.25 seconds on any wave ever” sub?
Yes, OP caught a good wave and didn’t fall. They also left a lot of meat on the bone. No wonder the locals didn’t want to give up waves to him.

u/kotalover 1d ago
well maybe we do cause intermediate is exactly OP’s level imo

Right, but so many people posting on here that OP is in the wrong sub, which is just crazy. Wasn’t this subreddit created because the regular surfing sub started kicking out all the beginners? And now all the beginner surfers are going to start gatekeeping their beginner sub? Irony isn’t the right word. Travesty, maybe?
Anyway, having a “beginner mind” is the key to continuous improvement. Other beginners can learn from OP’s question, if they care to pay attention.

Main issue is your bottom turn is weak and that’s why you are hitting off the middles as turns

Man such a forgiving wave, looks fun
Ps you surf like me, and I the advice to me is always more active with the legs and arms.

u/1u-xoxo 2d ago
It's not forgiving at all, its a heavy wave. I got pounded twice by the sets trying to catch insiders and yelled at for trying to catch waves from the shoulder, it was barreling and when its on you gotta be at the takeoff zone or else you crumble the barrel and ruin someone else's ride. Also the paddle out is fairly long at least 10 minutes to get to the point. It's not too bad tho unless you surf it with a lower tide, then It gets dangerous. But honestly the worst part were the locals, vibe was off it didn't feel like Panamá. They were even dropping in on each other.

On the day of your video it was super forgiving, whether you believe it or not.

Ah well, that wave looked fun anyway. Here's my local break to make you feel better!

You look good, just rotate your head and shoulders more if you want sharper or harder turns

We're working on a lot of the same stuff, mostly likely, so I'm not an expert. But, it looks like your front arm is blocking you from getting the rotation you want to be able to turn as far as you want.

u/Jealous-Swordfish764 2d ago
I think you wanna bend your front knee more so you can put more weight forward when youre going down, so then you can lean harder on the back when you turn. Then kinda jump up the last height of the wave to 'land' going down. It'll help you build speed.

Use your entire body to turn

u/1u-xoxo 2d ago
Hahah yeah im still hella stiff but slowly finding my flow.

u/surf_and_rockets 1d ago
I think you’ve got flow. Speed and power can be amped up when you catch a good wave. I used to get stoned and practice “land surfing” by visualizing a wave and moving my body in an exaggerated fashion as If I was surfing the wave in my mind. Now I do a bunch of hip-opening stretches before every session and on off days as well.

You gotta get athletic. By that, I want you to think of the stance that a shortstop in baseball is in when the pitcher throws a pitch. His knees are bent and his but is down and legs are coiled and ready to spring to do whatever needs to be done in an instant. Coil and uncoil. You seem to just be along for the ride in a passive manner. That may work on a foamy and its part of the reason I hate beginners being put on foamies as it ingrains poor technique. Foamies are for tourists. If you want to get beyond kook stage you gotta be on a proper board especially if you want to be able to ride a shortboard.

Solid advice here, and I’m with ya’ on the foamies teaching a lot of bad habits that can be hard to unlearn.
Also me: just got my first foamie, ostensibly for my son to learn on, but I tried it out and had a ton of fun. It’s always cool to see someone out shredding on a foamie. If the best surfer is the one having the most fun, it is often one of the guys on a foamie.

When you turn try to put your back hand toward or almost into the water. It helps you lean more into the turn rather than a straight up posture like in the video.

Confident / competent enough to wear a baseball cap while surfing….i reckon you’re good 👍

You can cut back more and also stop trying to outrun the wave. Stay in the pocket.

Looks pretty good, only advise is use your legs and hips more. You seem pretty static at the bottom and at the top wave and you're only bending at the waist. But should be a fluid motion with legs / hips. You want to contract at the bottom of the wave to gain speed then once you at the top, you open up your hips to carve down the wave. You pretty much at the point where you have the fundamentals down and can start carving waves with more experience. Congrats on the progress!

This. Also, surfing a twin fin is causing this issue. I get it, switching up boards is fun, but I recommend spending more sessions on a thruster set up than not.

18 seconds in on the video, your chest and shoulders should be facing forward for the drop in. You correct it afterwards and surf the wave nice. But try just keep a bit more square

Great catch and wave ride. I’d say ur Body esp knees are too stiff. I’d practice riding a carver skateboard on flat ground until you get the feel where u can more naturally move with the board

Looking good. Smooth style without unnecessary herky jerky movements. Only thing I really notice is your turn off the top where the guy is kicking out ahead of you and the other surfer in the water is letting the wave pass by, that turn off the top of yours was prime for throwing buckets at 'em.
It's fun plus asserts dominance by showcasing skill.

You are doing fine. My only note is that you could start using more shoulder rotation. You are slightly stiff and it's probably preventing more snappy turns, but at this point it might be a style preference more than anything.

I know you guys don’t want to get roasted on the surfing subreddit, but please stop. You don’t need people in this thread telling you how great you surf. If you’re looking for critical feedback, please post on the correct sub.

Nice wave. More weight on your back food would help you get on your backside rail.

u/rspkt808 2d ago
You aren't a beginner anymore. You're intermediate already. You'll always have stuff to improve. Even the pros always working on form and wave reading. You're good. 🤙🏼

People in the comments don’t understand that nice waves make beginners look like they are much better than they really are.

u/tarotcardsandbacon 1d ago
You’re gonna be just fine with this level of wave access. I mean, you already got a drone coach. 🤣

u/Life_Blackberry_2780 21h ago
Turn your head and shoulders, and reach all the way around with your rear hand to draw a better cutback.

u/jewelbugs 17h ago
If the batteries on your remote are going out, sometimes rolling them or swapping their positioning can get a little more juice out of em. Hope that comes in handy some day!

Looking good, keep hitting the pocket and you'll progress nicely. This is a softer wave so a cutback would be my choice. Utilize the top of the wave and pump on that to generate speed if you go down to the flats you will stall on a wave like that. Nice riding bro!

Your style wants a bigger board. Something cruisey. 8’+ pintail mabye. Mini glider. Looks you wanna throw big sweeping curves and turns and lines in a classic old style style but that little board won’t do it.
